Something new · Rider to rider
A sleek standard-brim helmet that fits your head shape, with the finish and fit system you like.
Riders who like the Samshield 2.0 Shadowmatt look for the same smooth, low look. Start with head shape: the Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top for a round head, the One K Defender in Long Oval or the IRH IR4G XLT for a long oval, and the Trauma Void Pardus for an oblong head. Then choose matte, glossy or suede.

The short version
The Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top is the first helmet to try against a Samshield 2.0 Shadowmatt for a round head, and the One K Defender in Long Oval is the first for a long oval head. The other four cover suede, gloss, a lower profile and a lower price tier.

One K helmets
I CANNOT fit in a CO. I tried both Samshield and One K (was prepared to buy whatever fit better), and it was the One K.
One K helmets
Just a suggestion to throw in there, if the Samshield does not fit try the One K. They have very similar features and the fit is slightly different.
I tried on a OneK, Samshield, CO, GPA etc. None fit as well as the TV Lynx. I LOVE it!
Trauma Void helmets
I’ve found GPAs to fit very round. I had better luck with the Samshield with a particular liner, although I’ve ended up with the TraumaVoid and love it.
Riders call the IR4G basically a Samshield for a third of the price and say the IR4G XLT looks just as flash.
IRH IR4G
The other helmet to look into is the IRH 4G. It is basically a Samshield for 1/3 the price
One K Defender and IRH IR4G XLT
OneK Defender and IRH. Lots of airflow in those and easier on the wallet. The IRH 4G XLT (what I recently bought) looks just as flash as the Samshields but is far cheaper!
One K helmets
I love love my One K. It's amazing quality that is half the price of a samshield.
Equinavia helmets
Price - Wow! It’s so inexpensive for what you get. A fraction of the price of my Samshield I need to replace
Riders call the IR4G XLT slightly more comfortable than a Samshield and the Lynx the most comfortable helmet they have owned.
One K helmets
I have a OneK and tried on a Samshield. Fit is very similar IMO. I LOVE the OneK. It is so light, well ventilated
The IRH IR4G XLT also has a long oval fit and is extremely comfortable, it is actually slightly more comfortable than the Samshield.
Trauma Void Lynx
I have a Trauma Void Lynx and it’s the MOST comfortable helmet I’ve ever had (CO always fit me well too).
I have an oval head and like my Back on Track Pardus very much. It has a dial fit that I did not think I would like, but I do.
Side by side
Samshield fine-tunes the 2.0 with three liner shapes in one shell family, while the helmets here use a dial, a wheel or a refit liner. Samshield's details are the maker's; the others are from each product listing.

Fit tip
Wrap a soft tape about an inch above your eyebrows and compare front-to-back with ear to ear: close is round, longer front-to-back is long oval. Try the helmet with your hair the way you ride.Fit first

The Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top is the helmet to try first for a round head, the One K Defender in Long Oval for a head longer front-to-back than ear to ear, and the Trauma Void Pardus Smooth for a narrow, oblong head. Trauma Void describes the Lynx as a round fit in small, medium and large with a dial at the back, and the Pardus as a slim fit best suited to oblong heads, with a screw adjuster at the rear; between two Pardus sizes, Trauma Void advises the larger.
Shape matters as much as size on a Samshield too, since the Round, Shadow and Premium liners change the fit inside one shell family. One K describes its Regular/Round shell as almost identical front-to-back and side to side, so measure both directions before you choose.
In fairness
Samshield changes the fit with Round, Shadow and Premium liners inside one shell family, and some riders find a Samshield liner suits them well.Shop Trauma Void helmets

The One K Defender covers the finishes riders like on a Shadowmatt: glossy or matte on the standard Defender, and a synthetic suede covering on the Defender Suede, which One K says is reminiscent of traditional velvet hunt caps. Both have a polycarbonate and ABS composite shell, a washable quick-dry liner and seven vents: two on the sides, two in front, one at the back and two center stripe vents.
The One K Defender and the Samshield Shadowmatt both come with washable, interchangeable liners, and the IRH IR4G XLT is similar in style to the One K. For another top, the Trauma Void Lynx Micromocca has a micromocca shell with black glitter piping.

Samshield's 2.0 range includes Darkline and Premium Alcantara looks that no helmet here copies exactly.Shop One K Defender helmets

The IRH IR4G is the show helmet to hold up against a Shadowmatt in the hunter and jumper ring, and the IR4G XLT is the one for a long oval head. IRH lists rear and side ventilation, a quick-release chin strap and a machine-washable liner on the IR4G, in matte black or gloss vent versions.
The XLT comes with two machine-washable liners in different thicknesses to find a custom fit, ventilation ports in front, top and back, and a harness cut slightly away at the back of the neck.
In fairness
Riders describe the Shadowmatt's vent as one they can feel, so try both on a warm day if airflow decides it for you.Shop IRH IR4G helmets
Shop all ›Hair up, between sizes

The Equinavia Skylar is the helmet to try for riding with your hair up, with a ponytail cut-out and an easy-adjust dial; for between sizes, a dial or wheel helmet such as the Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top or EQ3 NEOZ; and for a liner that feels tight or loose, the One K Defender Refit Liner or the IR4G XLT's two liners. The Equinavia Gardian shares the Skylar's dial and washable Coolmax liner in a sleek, low-profile shell.
Two Samshield owners describe the problems these fit tools address: one says her hair kept sliding out of her Shadowmatt, and another needed a larger liner in a larger shell. Try any helmet on with your hair the way you ride, because a bun or ponytail changes how a back dial sits.
In fairness
Samshield sells its liners separately, so a Shadowmatt owner can change the fit without buying a new shell.Samshield Shadowmatt
Life was fine with two of my helmets, but when I purchased a Samshield ShadowMatt my hair kept sliding out!
Samshield
For real-life reference, I’m a 7 1/4 in virtually every helmet, but a 7 1/4M liner in a Samshield medium shell is a bit tight on me; I need a 7 1/4L liner in the large shell.

Virginia Tech's 2026 equestrian table rates 54 helmets, and the Trauma Void EQ3 NEOZ leads the helmets on this page with 4 stars, sixth overall. The same table lists the Samshield Shadowmatt at 2 stars, 30th, tested in 2024, without saying which shell generation it tested.

In fairness
The Samshield 2.0 Shadowmatt is the helmet many hunter and jumper riders picture first, and its strengths are real.
If you want a Darkline or Premium Alcantara finish, Samshield's 2.0 range is built around those looks.
If a Round, Shadow or Premium liner already fits your head, Samshield's liners change the fit inside the same shell.
If you came from a GPA, some riders find the 2.0 the closest feel to it.
If you like to feel air through the vent, riders say the Samshield's is one they notice.
For a round head, try the Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top, with a dial at the back; for a long oval head, the One K Defender in Long Oval or the IRH IR4G XLT. The One K Defender Suede covers a suede look and the Equinavia Skylar a lower price tier. Measure your head first, then try your two favorites on.
CloseThey are finishes of the same Samshield 2.0 helmet: Shadowmatt is matte and Shadow Glossy is glossy. Among the helmets here, the One K Defender comes in glossy or matte, and the IRH IR4G comes with matte or gloss vent trim.
CloseSamshield lists no MIPS version of the 2.0 on its pages. Trauma Void lists MIPS on the Lynx Smooth Top, EQ3 NEOZ and Pardus Smooth, all with a dial, wheel or screw adjuster at the back.
CloseStart with the One K Defender in Long Oval, shaped for a head longer front-to-back than ear to ear, or the IRH IR4G XLT, which riders describe as a long oval fit. For a narrow, oblong head, try the Trauma Void Pardus Smooth.
CloseLook for a ponytail cut-out, a dial or a refit liner. The Equinavia Skylar has a ponytail cut-out and an easy-adjust dial, and the One K Defender Refit Liner changes the fit of a Defender. Try any helmet on with your hair the way you ride.
CloseRiders comparing the Shadowmatt often ask about other Samshield models, head-to-head comparisons and what riders try when a favorite helmet brand is hard to find. These pages go further.
