How to Choose a Troxel Helmet

Troxel's helmet range is built around a simple idea: the helmet you'll actually wear every day is the one that fits you properly and doesn't punish you on a long ride. That shows up in how wide the range runs — from the Sport 2.0 and Spirit at the accessible end, through the Liberty, Dakota, Rebel and Intrepid, up to the ES, Sierra and Cheyenne.

Two models in our range carry MIPS. The Spirit MIPS and the Terrain MIPS are the ones to look at if that layer matters to you. The standard Spirit and the rest of the range don't carry it.

Head shape matters more than head size. This is where Troxel earns its following. Riders tell us the fit accommodates shapes that pinch in other helmets — the Sierra suits an oval head, the Intrepid stays snug through a hot summer without feeling closed in. If you've owned a helmet that matched the tape measure and still gave you a headache by the end of a lesson, that's the problem Troxel's fit system is built to solve.

Starting a child? The Kids' Toddler Helmet is built for first pony lessons — light enough that a small rider doesn't fight it, with a chin strap that holds through a full session.

Protect the helmet you buy. A helmet lives in a tack room, a truck and a trailer, and that is what wears it out first. We stock the Lycra, velvet and water-resistant covers, a winter liner for cold mornings, and the Helmet Brimmer for sun and rain.

One thing no cover fixes: a helmet that's taken an impact is finished, however good it looks. Replace it.
