What riders say about Shires FlyGuard

Four buyers on FlyGuard fly masks, in their own words.

Shires FlyGuard Pro Hi-Viz Fine Mesh Fly Mask w/Ears & Fringe

★★★★★

Great product I have had one for three years and it was still going strong, but got one for my other horse. I like the fact that the fringe doesn’t impede their breathing and it moves and keeps flies off of their nose. It does give sun protection as well.

Shires FlyGuard Fine Mesh Fly Mask w/Ears & Nose

★★★★★

An excellent fly guard that keeps our ponies safe from UV and flies. They machine wash well in just water so no scent. We prefer this brand to all others.

★★★★★

Amazing. Pony size fits my cob perfectly. No having to try hand sew Velcro like I do with some other brands.

Shires FlyGuard fly masks: ears, nose, fringe or earless

Most FlyGuard fly masks are full face mesh with fleece padding along the seams that keeps the mask away from the eyes. What changes is the face coverage: ears for horses that tolerate them, a nose or a moving fringe for the muzzle, or an earless mask for a horse that objects to anything touching its ears.

Shires says the nose fringe moves with the horse to help deter flies around the muzzle, and that the open forelock on the Pro Fine Mesh mask uses the natural motion of the hair to help whisk flies away.

Fine Mesh, Air Motion, Stretch and FlyGuard Pro masks

Shires builds the range in four fabrics. Fine Mesh masks are the base style. Air Motion masks use a breathable 3D fabric that Shires says actively circulates air to keep moisture low and reduce heat build-up. Stretch masks are four-way stretch, with a zip fastening and, Shires says, 180 degrees of vision through dome-shaped eye visors.

FlyGuard Pro adds structure. Shires describes the Pro Deluxe masks as ideal for sensitive horses, with the mesh lifted away from the face by reinforced darts, and the Pro Hi-Viz masks as reflective, high visibility masks for low light turnout at dawn and dusk.

FlyGuard UV protection and care

Shires rates its fine mesh FlyGuard masks UV 70+ to reduce the chance of sunburn and bleaching, and notes that the effectiveness of UV protection may diminish over time. On the Shires Stretch Fly Mask with Ears, Shires says the fine mesh eye visors block 60+ UV rays.

Shires says the Air Motion fabric is easy care. Most FlyGuard masks close with touchtape straps under the jaw; the Stretch masks zip.
