The Paddock Boot Edit

Best sellers
TuffRider calls the Starter its best-selling children's boot, and makes it in synthetic leather with elastic side gussets, a front zipper, a punched toe cap and spur rests. Mountain Horse describes the Veganza as an all-round synthetic paddock boot suitable for the competition arena, and Dublin makes the Altitude Zip in grained PU that it says looks and feels just like leather, with a YKK zipper.

TuffRider Kids' Starter Front Zip Paddock Boots
I bought these for my daughter. She finds them very comfy even out of the box and loves the deeper grip on the ball of the foot. Zipper is easier than the lace up style and provides for protection in the muck!

Zip vs lace
Several kids' styles come both ways, so you can keep the boot and choose the closure: TuffRider makes the Starter as a Front Zip and a Lace Up, Saxon makes the Syntovia Zip and Syntovia Lace, Dublin makes the Altitude Zip and Altitude Lace Up, and Equistar makes the All Weather Synthetic Zip and Laced. Horze takes another route on the Kilkenny, with a zip up the back and faux laces for the look.

Fit & room to grow
Mountain Horse also gives the Veganza Winter Paddock a removable insole that allows for growth, and Equinavia describes the Tilda Synthetic Zip Paddock Boots as ideal for growing feet. Ovation gives the Kids' Tuscany Lace a rounder shape it describes as appropriate for a child's foot, and says the Kids' Energy Zip provides ample toe room. For the smallest riders, Horze makes the Seville Toddler Front Zip and Morella Toddler Paddock Boots. Horze notes European sizing on its Kids' Signature and Kilkenny jodhpur boots, so Find Your Fit lists EU sizes as well as US sizes.

Care
LeMieux's care note for the Kids' Junior Zip Paddock Boots: after every wear, dry naturally; for a deep clean, remove dirt with a soft brush, use a quality leather cleaner, apply a leather balm and buff with a soft cloth. Horze says to wipe the Wexford clean with soap and water, and to wipe the Devon, Seville and Morella with a damp cloth and use leather care or cleaning products. For rubber, LeMieux says to clean its kids' wellies with water after every wear, never to use detergent because it damages rubber, and to air dry them away from heat.
Are kids' paddock boots waterproof, and how do I look after them?

First boots
TuffRider describes the Kids' Starter Front Zip as perfect for new and experienced young riders in any discipline, and the Kids' Perfect Front Zip as great for schooling or showing. In USEF dressage, tests or classes at Fourth Level or below allow paddock or jodhpur boots with half chaps or garters that match the color of the boots (DR120.1.6), and in the jumper ring half chaps are permitted as long as their color matches the paddock boots (JP111.11). Kids' half chaps and tall boots are on our Kids' Riding Boots page.

Where each brand's range of kids' paddock boots leans. Choose a bar to shop that brand's winter-ready paddock boots or all its kids' paddock boots.
For lessons and schooling, the boot is your choice or your trainer's. At a USEF show, boots or shoes worn while riding anywhere on the competition grounds must have a distinguishable heel. From there, the brands' own descriptions do the sorting: a front zip for quick changes, laces to adjust the fit, and a removable insole on the Mountain Horse Veganza when a growing rider needs room.

Questions parents ask
Start from each brand's own fit notes and size system. Horze says its Kids' Signature Jodhpur Boots and Kids' Kilkenny Polyurethane Jodhpur Boots have European sizing, so choose an EU size in Find Your Fit for those. Elastic is part of the fit on pull-on styles: Horze gives the Signature ribbed elastic sides for flexible support, and gives the Morella Toddler Paddock Boots elastic inserts and pull straps so they go on and come off quickly. Ovation gives the Kids' Tuscany Lace Paddock Boot a rounder shape it describes as appropriate for a child's foot, and says the Kids' Energy Zip Front Paddock Boot provides ample toe room.
For kids, we go by what our customers buy most: TuffRider, led by the Kids' Starter Front Zip Paddock Boots, then Mountain Horse with the Kids' Veganza Zip and Veganza Winter Paddocks, and Dublin with the Kids' Altitude Zip Paddock Boots. Saxon, Ovation, Equistar and Shires Moretta follow.
Paddock boots are ankle-height riding boots that close with a zip, laces or elastic sides. At Tack of the Day they are filed under Short Boots, with the style Paddock Boots, and you can shop the kids' range in the grid on this page.
Horze describes its Kids' Signature Jodhpur Boots as a pull-on paddock boot with ribbed elastic sides. Brands use the names loosely: Horze also calls the zip-front Seville and the back-zip Kilkenny jodhpur boots, and at Tack of the Day all of them are filed under the style Paddock Boots.
Some brands build growth into the boot. Mountain Horse makes the Kids' Veganza Zip Paddock with a removable extra insole that, when removed, makes the boot two half sizes larger, and gives the Veganza Winter Paddock a removable insole that allows for growth. Equinavia describes the Tilda Synthetic Zip Paddock Boots as ideal for growing feet, and Saxon describes the Syntovia as a paddock boot that won't break the bank, because kids grow out of their boots quickly.
Several brands sell their kids' paddock boots on value. Saxon says the Syntovia won't break the bank, Equinavia calls the Tilda affordably priced, Horze describes the Wexford as an excellent value and the Bonn Rubber Paddock Boots as affordably priced, and Dublin describes the Rapture Zip as a leather paddock boot at a remarkably affordable price. Kids' half chaps are on our Kids' Riding Boots page.
Yes, paddock boots are riding boots. TuffRider describes the Kids' Starter Front Zip as perfect for new and experienced young riders in any discipline, and Mountain Horse gives the Veganza a slim outsole made for riding. In USEF dressage, tests or classes at Fourth Level or below allow paddock or jodhpur boots with half chaps or garters that match the color of the boots (DR120.1.6). For lessons and schooling, the boot is your choice or your trainer's.
For lessons and schooling, it is your choice or your trainer's. The 2026 USEF rules cover them in the show ring: in dressage at Fourth Level or below, paddock or jodhpur boots are allowed with half chaps or garters that match the color of the boots (DR120.1.6), and in the jumper ring half chaps are permitted as long as their color matches the paddock boots (JP111.11). Kids' half chaps are on our Kids' Riding Boots page.
It depends on the division. USEF dressage rules allow paddock or jodhpur boots with half chaps or garters that match the boots at Fourth Level or below, and require tall boots above Fourth Level (DR120.1.6). USEF jumper rules require boots and permit half chaps as long as their color matches the paddock boots (JP111.11). The 2026 USEF hunter attire rule (HU107) and equitation attire rules (EQ105 and EQ106) do not set a rule on paddock boots. Boots or shoes worn while riding anywhere on the competition grounds must have a distinguishable heel (GR 801.9, as cited in the USEF Dressage Attire and Equipment booklet).
Each closure does a different job, by the brands' own descriptions. TuffRider puts a front zipper on the Kids' Starter for convenience, and pairs the front zip on the Kids' Baroque with a boot pull behind the ankle for easy on and off. TuffRider says the front laces on the Kids' Starter Lace Up allow for the best fit every time, and Dublin describes the lace front on the Kids' Altitude Lace Up as giving ease and adjustability. Horze makes the Kids' Signature Jodhpur Boots in a slip-on style, with no laces or zipper.
Some are waterproof and more are water-resistant. TuffRider describes its kids' paddock boots as water-resistant and makes the Kids' Winter Trotter with a waterproof leather upper foot and a waterproof insole, Ovation describes the Kids' Energy Zip as easy care and water-resistant, and Horze describes the Kids' Bonn Rubber Paddock Boots as waterproof. For care, follow the brand: TuffRider says to wipe the Kids' Starter with a damp cloth, Horze says to wipe the Kids' Wexford clean with soap and water, and LeMieux says to dry its leather Kids' Junior Zip Paddock Boots naturally after every wear and, for a deep clean, use a soft brush, a quality leather cleaner and a leather balm, then buff with a soft cloth.
Winter paddock boots are paddock boots with a warm lining. TuffRider lines the Kids' Starter Winter with fleece and says it is not bulky, Mountain Horse gives the Kids' Veganza Winter Paddock winter weight insulation, Horze lines the Kids' Devon Winter Paddock Boots with faux fur, and TuffRider builds the Kids' Winter Trotter with a fleece lining and insulated ankles.
Some brands describe theirs for both. Equistar makes the Kids' All Weather Synthetic paddock boots for comfort and durability in the saddle and around the barn, TuffRider makes the Kids' Starter Winter to keep young riders warm on winter barn days, and Horze describes the Kids' Bonn Rubber Paddock Boots for hobby riding or wearing around the stable. For barn days out of the saddle, LeMieux makes the Kids' Splash Welly and the Kids' Junior Bramshaw Welly in rubber, and TuffRider makes the waterproof Kids' BarnMule Pony Pals.
