Stable blankets are designed for indoor use — stalls, barns, and trailers. They are not waterproof. Unlike turnout blankets, stable blankets are built without a waterproof outer shell because they're never intended for outdoor exposure in rain or wet weather. Using a stable blanket outside in the elements will leave a horse wet and cold; that job belongs to a turnout.

What stable blankets do well is provide clean, consistent warmth in a controlled environment. They typically have a softer lining than turnouts — often nylon or a brushed inner — which is gentler on a clipped coat and more comfortable for a horse standing still in a stall for extended periods.

Fill weight works the same way it does across the blanket range. Lighter fills suit mild barn nights or horses that run warm. Heavier fills are right for cold barns, horses that have been clipped, or horses that drop condition quickly in winter. A well-fitted stable blanket stays in place through the night without twisting or putting pressure on the withers.
