Show Day, Done Right

The show ring has its own dress code - and it's not arbitrary. A polished, correct turnout tells the judge you mean business, and there's something about putting on your show coat that tells your horse today is different!  Whether you're showing hunters, stepping into the dressage arena, or pinning on your cross-country number, dressing right is part of the job.

Hunters, Jumpers & Equitation

Hunters are the most traditional of the English disciplines, and the attire reflects that heritage - though the fabrics have come a long way. For everyday hunter classes: a dark show coat (navy, black, or hunter green), a well-fitted show shirt with a built-in high collar, and beige or tan breeches. Stock ties belong at hunter classics and derbies - not in your regular over-fences or flat classes.

On coats: the old-school wool show coat is largely being replaced by technical fabrics with perforated mesh panels and four-way stretch construction. They move with you in the saddle, keep you genuinely cool on a hot July show day, and most are machine washable - a significant upgrade on a coat that used to need dry cleaning after every class.

For boots, field boots are the go-to for hunters and jumpers. The front lacing system and the natural ankle crease that develops with wear both help lock in a correct heels-down position for jumping. Dress boots - clean laceless front, zipper at the back of the boot -  have a more formal profile and show up for classic classes and derbies where elegance is the priority.

Hunter classics call for a step up: white breeches, a formal show shirt, and a white stock tie. It’s the most traditional look in the hunter ring and worth having in the wardrobe for the big classes.

Equitation holds to the same standard as hunters, with a particularly sharp eye on fit and neatness. Jumpers give you more room to express yourself — colored coats are completely accepted - but turned-out and correct still matters at any level.

Dressage

Dressage is all about elegance and precision, and the dress code is the most formal of the English disciplines. At the lower levels: a dark show coat (navy or black), white or light-colored breeches, black gloves, and tall boots. At the upper levels, the shadbelly jacket makes its appearance alongside white gloves - a look that signals you’ve earned your way up the levels. An approved safety helmet is required throughout, at every level. The whole turnout should be clean, quietly authoritative, and completely undistracting - because in dressage, the horse is the show.

Eventing

Eventing gives you three phases and three looks. Dressage day follows the dressage rules above. Show jumping day is more flexible — a colored show coat is perfectly acceptable. Cross-country is where it gets fun: stable colors, a certified and well-fitted body protector, and boots that can handle the terrain. Quick Rider Checklist: Before You Leave the Barn

Run through this the night before, not in the parking lot!

• Show coat - hanging in a garment bag keeps it neat and clean

• Breeches - pack several pairs, for pre-show schooling as well as the ring

• Tall boots - polished and kept in a boot bag. A schooling pair is great to have; a spare is a lifesaver if a back zip goes at the wrong moment

• Stock tie or show tie - pinned correctly, if you’re doing hunter classic classes

• Gloves -  black for hunters and dressage; white for classics and upper-level dressage

• Helmet -  black for hunters; brown, navy, or black for dressage. SEI/ASTM certified, harness adjusted. A schooling backup is worth having in the trailer

• Backup pin and hairnet -  always

In Your Briefcase

At a rated show - USEF, USHJA, or FEI -  the show office needs paperwork before you’ll see a competition number. Most entries go in electronically these days, but you still need physical or digital copies of the following at check-in. Arrive without them and you’re looking at late fees at best, a scratch at worst.

• Memberships and registrations. Current USEF/USHJA membership cards for the rider, owner, trainer, and coach. Your horse’s recording card or HID number. Competing in amateur sections? Bring proof of your current amateur certification.

• Health and vaccination records — the one that catches people out. You need a current negative Coggins (the EIA test, valid for the calendar year). Proof of flu and rhino vaccinations within the last six months, per USEF rule GR845. Traveling from out of state? Add a health certificate dated within 30 days. Originals are always safer than copies.

• Specific qualifications. Ponies and junior hunters need a current USEF measurement card, or the pony gets measured on-site. FEI and some USEF classes now require a microchip number for the horse — worth confirming before you get to the ring.

• Entry forms. A completed, signed entry form including the Federation Release and Assumption of Risk waiver. Adults (18+) must also be current on SafeSport training. That’s a hard requirement now, not a suggestion.

Worth keeping everything in a dedicated show binder at the start of season and refreshing it as renewals come in. Future you will be grateful.
