The Classic Hunter Ring

Hunters are the most traditional English discipline, and the dress code shows it: navy, black or hunter green coats, a fitted show shirt and clean, quiet tack. Equitation holds the same standard, with a sharp eye on fit and neatness.

Today’s show coats are technical fabrics with mesh panels and four-way stretch, so they move with you in two-point and wash at home. Field boots, with front laces and a natural ankle crease, help you keep your heels down over fences. Jumpers have more room for color.

Ovation show shirts

Time to dress for dressage. I had on a loose-fitting, all-cotton, aloha shirt. I had to change into a long-sleeve, close-fitting, show shirt. The material was suspiciously slippery. I had worn the shirt before. Never when it was this hot. I was NOT looking forward to putting it on. Imagine my astonishment when the show shirt was cooler than my casual shirt.

Dressage

Elegant, Precise, Correct

Dressage has the most formal dress code of the English disciplines, and the whole turnout should be clean and quietly elegant, because in dressage the horse is the show.

Dress boots, with a smooth, stiff shaft, give the long, straight leg the judge wants to see. A shadbelly is the coat you earn your way into as you move up the levels.

    Show coat

    Hang it in a garment bag so it arrives neat and clean.

    Shirts and breeches

    Pack several, for schooling as well as the ring.

  3. 3

    Tall boots

    Polished and in a boot bag. A spare pair saves the day if a zip goes at the wrong moment.

  4. 4

    Stock tie, gloves and helmet

    White stock tie for hunter classics; black gloves for hunters and dressage, white for classics and upper-level dressage; a certified helmet, harness adjusted.

  5. 5

    Hairnet and spare pins

    Always.

Run through it the night before, not in the parking lot.

Kerrits Stretch Competitor Koat

This coat is amazing, its affordable, its nice enough for upper level shows, and it breathable and stretchy. The only thing I have to say is to order a size down from what it says. My normal size was a medium and I had to get a small. Overall amazing show coat for nearly a third of the price of others.

Paperwork for a Rated Show

  1. 1

    Memberships

    Current USEF and USHJA cards for rider, owner and trainer, your horse’s recording number, and your amateur card if you show as an amateur.

  2. 2

    Health records

    A current negative Coggins and proof of flu and rhino vaccines within the last six months. Crossing state lines? Add a health certificate.

  3. 3

    Measurement cards

    Ponies and junior hunters need a current measurement card. Some classes now ask for your horse’s microchip number.

  4. 4

    Entry forms

    Signed entries with the release and waiver. Adults also need current SafeSport training.

Keep it all in one show binder and update it as renewals come in. Future you will be grateful.
