Something new · Rider to rider
The fit, the brim and the show-ring look you liked, in helmets we carry.
Riders who move on from a Samshield, whether a 2.0 Shadowmatt, a wide-brim Miss Shield or an XJ, name One K, Trauma Void, IRH and Equinavia. We don't sell Samshield, so every helmet here is one we carry, matched to the Samshield you wore.

The short version
The One K Defender is the helmet riders name for a Shadowmatt, the Equinavia Crown MIPS for a Miss Shield's wide brim, and the Trauma Void Lynx for a head that wants a dial.

Each guide below takes one Samshield question and works it through with the helmets we carry: fit and head shape, the value show helmets, the One K and Trauma Void head-to-heads, the 2.0 Shadowmatt, the wide-brim Miss Shield and replacing an older Samshield.
Start with the guide closest to the Samshield you wore. This page is the overview; the guides hold the side-by-side tables.
Rider voices
Riders tell us they look beyond Samshield for three things: a lower price, a fit that suits their head shape and the show-ring look in a helmet that costs less.

Riders who wanted the Samshield look found it in these.
See IRH, Equinavia and OvationRiders say a One K costs about half of a Samshield, an IRH 4G about a third, and one rider owns four Trauma Voids for the price of one Samshield.
One K helmets
I love love my One K. It's amazing quality that is half the price of a samshield.
The other helmet to look into is the IRH 4G. It is basically a Samshield for 1/3 the price
*Price - Wow! It’s so inexpensive for what you get. A fraction of the price of my Samshield I need to replace
Trauma Void helmets
That's why I own 4. I have 2 blues, 1 brown and 1 black. All for the price of 1 Samshield.
Riders with oval and long oval heads say a One K or an IRH IR4G XLT fit them when other brands didn't.
The IRH IR4G XLT also has a long oval fit and is extremely comfortable, it is actually slightly more comfortable than the Samshield.
One K helmets
this helmet is great for those whose heads don't fit in to samshield (like mine.) this helmet is so comfortable with and without a hairnet, and it doesn't move an inch while you're on the horse. i love it and will definitely buy it again when mine needs to be replaced.
A Miss Shield pressed on one rider's forehead, a retired Samshield became a One K Defender with a sun visor option, and an Ovation Deluxe Schooler drew more show-ring compliments than a Samshield.
Equinavia helmets
I have an oval head (regular Samshield’s fit me but the Miss Shield presses on my forehead after awhile). I only quickly tried it on, so I’ll need to ride in it and all that, but so far so good on the fit!
I loved my Samshield but when I retired it, I got a One K Defender with MIPS. It fits great and they have a sun visor option.
I have an Ovation Deluxe Schooler that I wore at quite a few shows last year (A rated). Got more compliments on that hat than my Samshield and it's super comfortable to boot!
IRH IR4G XLT helmets
OneK Defender and IRH. Lots of airflow in those and easier on the wallet. The IRH 4G XLT (what I recently bought) looks just as flash as the Samshields but is far cheaper!

Swap guide
Find the Samshield you wore in the left column. The helmets riders move to sit beside it, with a price tier for each.
Price tiers among these picks: $ (lowest) to $$$$ (highest)
| If you wore | Riders switch to | Why riders choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0 Shadowmatt, Shadow Glossy or Darkline | The Defender comes in matte, glossy and suede. The IR4G is a vented show helmet, and the Lynx adds a dial fit. | |
| Miss Shield 2.0, wide brim | Three wide-brim shapes. The Avance adds swappable CCS panels, and the Crown has a flexible peak and a dial. | |
| A Samshield on a long oval head | IRH and One K both make a long oval fit, and Trauma Void describes the Pardus as a slim fit for oblong heads. | |
| Crystal, Fast Custom or Premium Alcantara | One K's CCS panels and rails swap for a custom look, and the Crown comes with crystals set. No helmet we carry has an Alcantara shell. | |
| XJ or XC carbon shell for cross-country | A peaked helmet, a skull-style shell and a lower-tier carbon-fiber shell. Check your rulebook for the standard it requires. | |
| A Samshield for shows and a helmet for every day | Dial-fit schooling helmets at the lowest tier here, so the show helmet stays for the ring. |
Fit tip
Measure around your head about an inch above your eyebrows, in centimeters, and match that to the new maker's size chart, not to your Samshield shell or liner size. Try the helmet on with your hair the way you ride.Closest match
The One K Defender is the helmet we carry that most resembles a Samshield 2.0 Shadowmatt in look: it comes in matte, glossy and suede finishes, in Regular/Round and Long Oval shells, with a washable liner you can swap.
For a wide brim, One K makes the Avance Wide Brim and the MIPS CCS Avance Wide Brim, which adds swappable CCS panels so the look can change with your show colors.

The Defender doesn't have a dial, so if you want a dial, look at Trauma Void or Equinavia below.Shop One K helmets

Trauma Void's Lynx Smooth Top, EQ3 NEOZ and Pardus Smooth are the dial-fit helmets riders compare with a Samshield, and Trauma Void lists MIPS on each. The Lynx is cut for rounder heads, the NEOZ adjusts with a wheel at the back, and the Pardus is a slim fit for oblong heads.
The Lynx Eventing Skull is the skull-style shell for cross-country. In Virginia Tech's 2026 table the NEOZ EQ3 and Lynx Eventing MIPS rank 6th and 7th with 4 stars.

Fit comes first with Trauma Void: pick the Lynx for a rounder head and the Pardus for a longer one, and try it on before you commit.Shop Trauma Void helmets

The IRH IR4G is a vented, low-profile show helmet with a washable liner, the IR4G XLT adds a long oval fit, and the F1 Wide Brim gives a Miss Shield-style brim. Equinavia's Crown MIPS adds a flexible wide peak, a dial and crystal finishes, and Ovation's Deluxe Schooler is a dial-fit helmet for everyday rides.
Equinavia's Skylar and Gardian sit at the lowest tier on this page, and both rate 3 stars in Virginia Tech's 2026 table.

We'd rather you buy the right helmet than the wrong one from us. Riders who stay with a Samshield have good reasons.
If a Samshield fits your head shape better than anything else, keep it; riders say it suits many oval heads.
If you tune fit with liners, Samshield sells replaceable liners in Round, Shadow and Premium shapes.
If you want a custom finish, its configurator offers custom finishes, including Alcantara.
If you value its Restart service, Samshield describes it as an inner-shell replacement.
No. We don't carry Samshield. This page covers helmets we do carry, from One K, Trauma Void, IRH, Equinavia, Ovation and TuffRider, matched to the Samshield line you wore.
CloseRiders name the One K Defender for matte, glossy and suede finishes in Regular/Round and Long Oval shells, the IRH IR4G for a vented show helmet, and the Trauma Void Lynx Smooth Top for a dial fit.
CloseFor a wide brim, try the Equinavia Crown MIPS, the IRH F1 Wide Brim or the One K MIPS CCS Avance Wide Brim. The Miss Shield guide sets each beside the Miss Shield.
CloseVirginia Tech's 2026 equestrian table rates one Samshield, the Shadowmatt, 30th of 54 with 2 stars. Trauma Void's NEOZ EQ3 ranks 6th with 4 stars. The table scores lab impact tests, not fit.
CloseNone of the models on Samshield's helmet pages lists MIPS, as we checked in November 2026. Trauma Void lists MIPS on the Lynx, NEOZ and Pardus, and Equinavia on the Crown.
