The low-profile show-ring look you liked on a Samshield, a price tier or two lower.
Want the Samshield show-ring look without the Samshield price? Riders compare four brands: IRH's IR4G and IR4G XLT for a standard brim, the Equinavia Crown MIPS and Shires Karben Sonic Marzia for a wide brim, Karben crystal finishes for sparkle, and Ovation for a show-and-school pair. Pick the brim first, then the finish, then the fit system.

The short version
The IRH IR4G is the standard-brim helmet riders hold up against a Samshield 2.0, and the Equinavia Crown MIPS is the wide brim they hold up against a Miss Shield.

The helmets they point to
Riders name the IRH 4G and the Equinavia Crown as the lower-priced helmets to look at.
See the price tiersThe helmets they point to
Riders wear these helmets at rated shows and like how they look.
See OvationThe helmets they point to
Long oval heads and Miss Shield forehead pressure come up most.
See IRHOne rider calls the IRH 4G basically a Samshield for a third of the price, another says her IR4G XLT looks just as flash, and a third replacing her Samshield calls the Crown a fraction of the price.
IRH IR4G Helmet
The other helmet to look into is the IRH 4G. It is basically a Samshield for 1/3 the price
IRH IR4G XLT Helmet
OneK Defender and IRH. Lots of airflow in those and easier on the wallet. The IRH 4G XLT (what I recently bought) looks just as flash as the Samshields but is far cheaper!
Equinavia Crown MIPS
Price - Wow! It’s so inexpensive for what you get. A fraction of the price of my Samshield I need to replace
Shires Karben helmets
The only non dial hats that I could find were Samshield (expensive) and the only dial one that came close to fitting was a Shires Karben
One rider wore an Ovation Deluxe Schooler at A-rated shows and got more compliments than on her Samshield; another finds her IRH almost as nice.
Ovation Deluxe Schooler Helmet
I have an Ovation Deluxe Schooler that I wore at quite a few shows last year (A rated). Got more compliments on that hat than my Samshield and it's super comfortable to boot!
IRH riding helmets
This helmet is comfortable and almost as nice as my Samshield.
Riders say the IR4G XLT fits a long oval and feels slightly more comfortable than a Samshield, that IRH fits when others did not, and that the Crown fit where a Miss Shield pressed on the forehead.
The IRH IR4G XLT also has a long oval fit and is extremely comfortable, it is actually slightly more comfortable than the Samshield.
IRH riding helmets
I’m also a die hard IRH customer, they are to this day the only helmet that fits my head the right way. I’ve tried on GPAs, Charles Owens, and Samshields and none of them fit quite right, yet the IRH always does. And seeing as they seem to be much lower on the pricing spectrum, I’m not complaining one bit
Equinavia Crown MIPS
I have an oval head (regular Samshield’s fit me but the Miss Shield presses on my forehead after awhile). I only quickly tried it on, so I’ll need to ride in it and all that, but so far so good on the fit!
Ovation riding helmets
I'm a long oval and my favorites are GPAs (yes, the older models were very round, but I haven't found that to be the case with my last several models), Samshields, and (drum roll) the Ovation dial-to-fit helmets (these are actually my favorite despite having several of the other two brands).
Side by side
Samshield builds its look on materials, liners and custom options; the four value brands build theirs on matte, suede-look, crystal and glitter finishes, with a dial or two liner thicknesses for fit. Samshield's details are the maker's.
| What you compare | Samshield 2.0 | Value helmets we carry | Honest note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard brim | 2.0 in matte, glossy and Alcantara-type finishes | IRH IR4G and IR4G XLT; Karben Sonic Alessa; Ovation Deluxe Schooler | Riders name the IR4G as the closest match. |

| Fit adjustment | Three liner shapes: Round, Shadow and Premium | Dial on Equinavia, Karben and Ovation; two liner thicknesses on the IR4G XLT and F1 | A dial leaves room to change your hair for the ring. |
| Finish | Matte, glossy, Alcantara, crystal; custom options | Matte (IRH), suede-look (IR4G XLT), crystal (Karben, Equinavia), glitter (Ovation Z-6 Glitz II) | No value helmet here matches Alcantara exactly. |

| A show-and-school pair | Lightweight with an easy-adjust dial, for schooling or showing. |
Fit tip
Measure about an inch above your eyebrows, compare front-to-back with ear to ear, and try the helmet on: it should sit level and snug with no pressure points at the forehead.Closest standard brim

The IRH IR4G is the standard-brim helmet riders compare by name with a Samshield 2.0: a low-profile show helmet in matte finishes, with rear and side ventilation, a hook-and-loop secured liner that is removable and machine washable, and a quick-release chin strap.
The IR4G XLT adds a suede-look finish in Dove Grey Suede, vents at the front, top and back, and two liners in different thicknesses for a custom-like fit; the F1 Wide Brim gives IRH a wide brim with the same two-liner approach. Riders tell us the IRH look holds up in the ring: one got so many compliments on the matte finish at her first show, and another wears hers daily and in the show ring.
In fairness
IRH tunes fit with liners, not a dial, so riders who change their hair for the ring may prefer the Equinavia, Karben or Ovation dial.IRH riding helmets
I was hesitant to buy a new helmet but went with this one because of the matte finish. I LOVE it. I used it for the first time at Color Breed Congress in November. Fits great and I got so many compliments on it! If you are thinking about getting this helmet. DO IT.
IRH riding helmets
Love this helmet! Looks and feels great. Very comfortable. I use it daily as well as in the show ring. Love that it comes with an extra insert for inside the helmet.

The Equinavia Crown MIPS is the wide-brim helmet to hold up against a Samshield Miss Shield, with a wide, flexible peak, a dial-adjustable fit, a MIPS layer, a chrome-coated frame with ventilation slots and a removable, washable lining.
The Crown Glossy MIPS has the same build in a glossy shell, and the Crown comes in crystal and shimmer finishes for a little sparkle. Riders tell us the Crown looks sleek and fits on the first try: one calls hers one of the sleekest helmets she has owned, with a brim just wide enough, and another says the dial does not catch her hair.
In fairness
If you wear a standard brim, the IRH IR4G above is the closer match to a Samshield 2.0.Equinavia Crown MIPS
I got the black and gunmetal, and it is one of the sleekest helmets I have ever owned. The brim is just wide enough to look attractive and be functional without it being overdone.
Equinavia riding helmets
This helmet was supposed to fit a slightly more round head shape, and it was suggested to size up to Lg if in-between. And it fits perfect, so happy I got the right helmet on the 1st try! I don't need a shim, the adjustment dial doesn't get caught in my hair.

Shires Karben Sonic helmets bring a Samshield-style show look with a dial fit: the Sonic Marzia Wide Peak has a fixed, flexible wide peak, an adjustable dial and a 4-point harness, and the Sonic Alessa adds a sparkle crown on a standard flexible brim.
The Sonic Alessa Wide Brim Crystal Finish puts crystal detail on a wide brim, the nearest Karben gets to a custom Samshield. Riders tell us Karben helmets are lightweight and comfortable: one calls hers gorgeous for shows, and another found the fit after a few clicks of the dial.
In fairness
Karben's finishes are crystal and sparkle rather than leather or Alcantara, so a rider who loved a Premium shell may find the IRH IR4G XLT suede closer.Shires Karben helmets
I have a Shires Karben for shows. It's gorgeous and looks like the One K Defender. It's super lightweight and comfortable and I will be buying another for every day as my Charles Owen is on its way out.
Shires Karben helmets
It is very lightweight and comfortable. It fits well after a few clicks of the dial adjuster.

Ovation suits riders who keep a show helmet and a schooling helmet: the Deluxe Schooler is a lightweight, low-profile helmet with an easy-adjust dial, a rubberized finish and a removable, washable liner, and the Z-6 Glitz II adds a leather brim and harness with frosted glitz accents on the top vents.
Riders tell us they ride and show in Ovation: one calls hers pretty and elegant for training and likes the dial for hair up, down or in braids, and another schools in an Ovation and shows in an Ovation show helmet.
In fairness
Ovation keeps the build simple; riders after a leather-look or crystal shell will find more of that from Karben or Equinavia.Ovation riding helmets
Very pretty and elegant for training. I bought a Large and it fit perfect! I use a size 7 3/4 and I was happy the helmet had a tightening dial to make it fit snug and comfortable. I love the adjustment option because I can wear my hair up, down or in braids and I can adjust to size. Definitely buying this item again in the future.
Ovation riding helmets
I school in an Ovation (carbon fiber sync) which I LOVE, and show in the Ovation show helmet. I think dressage must attract a different crowd because I see a huge variety of helmets at shows.

If lab ratings weigh in your choice, Virginia Tech's 2026 equestrian table rates 54 helmets, and Trauma Void's NEOZ EQ3 leads the helmets we carry with 4 stars, sixth overall. Equinavia's Gardian and Skylar, both 3 stars, are lightweight schooling helmets that pair well with a show helmet.
| Helmet | As Virginia Tech lists it | Rank of 54 | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trauma Void EQ3 NEOZ Helmet | TRAUMA VOID NEOZ EQ3 | 6 | 4 stars |
| Trauma Void Pardus Smooth Helmet | TRAUMA VOID PARDUS MIPS | 18 | 3 stars |
| Equinavia Gardian Riding Helmet | EQUINAVIA GARDIAN | 20 | 3 stars |
| Equinavia Skylar Riding Helmet | EQUINAVIA SKYLAR | 26 | 3 stars |
Ranks, stars and model names as Virginia Tech's 2026 table lists them; a lower rank number is a better score. The table also rates Samshield's Shadowmatt and several helmets on this page, each on its own. Virginia Tech scores helmets in lab impact tests; its table does not measure fit or comfort.
In fairness
Samshield is the show-ring helmet many riders picture first, and its finish, liners and custom options are real strengths.
If you want Alcantara, Darkline or crystal finishes, Samshield's custom options go further than any helmet on this page.
If you want one shell with three liners shaped to head shape, Samshield's Round, Shadow and Premium liners are built for that.
If you want the maker's Restart inner-shell service, Samshield offers it.
If a Samshield already fits you perfectly, that fit is worth weighing against the price.
Riders compare the IRH IR4G and IR4G XLT, the Equinavia Crown MIPS, Shires Karben Sonic helmets and Ovation's Deluxe Schooler and Z-6 Glitz II with a Samshield. Pick the brim first, then the finish, and try the helmet on.
CloseRiders tell us it comes close on look and comfort: one calls the IRH 4G basically a Samshield for a third of the price, and another finds the IR4G XLT slightly more comfortable on her long oval head. IRH fits with liners rather than a dial.
CloseOvation lists the Deluxe Schooler as certified to ASTM standards and IRH lists the IR4G at ASTM F1163-15, and riders tell us they show in both: one wore a Deluxe Schooler at A-rated shows. Check your show association's current helmet rule before you enter.
CloseThe Equinavia Crown MIPS and Crown Glossy MIPS, the Shires Karben Sonic Marzia Wide Peak and Sonic Alessa Wide Brim Crystal Finish, and the IRH F1 Wide Brim all have a wide brim. Compare brim width and fit system before you choose.
CloseThe Shires Karben Sonic Alessa has a sparkle crown and its Wide Brim Crystal Finish adds crystal detail, the Equinavia Crown MIPS comes in crystal and shimmer finishes, and Ovation's Z-6 Glitz II has glitter accents on the top vents.
CloseRiders comparing Samshield with value show helmets often ask about other Samshield models, head shapes, one-on-one comparisons and what riders try when Champion, Charles Owen or KASK helmets are hard to find. These pages go further.
