A liner layers underneath an outer blanket — turnout or stable — and adds fill weight without buying a heavier blanket for every temperature scenario. One well-chosen liner can effectively turn a medium weight into a heavy, or a lightweight into a medium, depending on conditions.
Liners are not waterproof. They don't need to be — that job belongs to the outer blanket. When layered under a turnout, the turnout's waterproof shell still handles rain and wind while the liner adds the warmth underneath. When used under a stable blanket, they add insulation for cold barn nights without turnout exposure.
Most liners attach via cross-surcingles and neck straps that connect to the outer blanket's attachment points, keeping everything in place through movement. Check that the liner you're buying is compatible with your outer blanket's closure system before ordering.
