Shires Aubrion describes its React Short Sleeve and Long Sleeve Base Layers as body skimming and its React Sweatshirt as a roomy, oversized fit. Dapplebay says its quarter-zip riding tops are true to size, with a longer length that stays tucked into your breeches. Some unisex styles carry their own note: Shires Aubrion says women should size down in the React Hoodie unless they want an oversize fit, and Troxel says women may want to size down in its unisex tees. It depends on the ride, so start from what you need it to do. For sun, choose a sun shirt with a UPF rating stated by its brand, such as the Equinavia Kari NordicAir (UPF 100) or the Chestnut Bay Caliente (UPF 50). For cool mornings, wear a fitted base layer under a quarter-zip or half-zip: Kerrits describes the extended half-zip on its Soft Haven Plush Fleece Half Zip Top as adjustable coverage for warming up or cooling down. For the barn and days off, choose a hoodie, sweatshirt or horse tee. What does UPF mean on a sun shirt?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, a rating of how much of the sun's ultraviolet radiation passes through a fabric: the higher the number, the less gets through. Brands state their own ratings on the product page. Equinavia gives the Kari NordicAir sun shirts UPF 100. Chestnut Bay builds UPF 50 into the Caliente Sun Shirt and the Performance Rider SkyCool Shirt, and Equine Couture rates its IceFill Sun Shirt UPF 50. Shires Aubrion gives the Revive Base Layer Sun Shirts UPF 50+, Alessandro Albanese gives the Sofia Sunshirt UPF 50+, and several RJ Classics tech shirts carry UPF 50+.
