Both are good helmets. They're just built for two different sports.
It's a fair question, and we hear it every fall. Sometimes from a rider eyeing the perfectly good bike helmet hanging in the garage; sometimes from a parent kitting out a beginner rider. It's only a hack around the field. Won't that do?
The short answer is no, and the reason is more interesting than "riding helmets are safer." A bike helmet isn't a flimsy thing. It's tested hard, to a federal standard, and held to the same limit for how much force it's allowed to pass through. It's a good piece of equipment.
It's just good equipment for cycling. Here's what makes a riding helmet its own thing.
This is the part most people have never heard, and it's the whole story.
When a helmet is certified, it isn't just dropped on a flat surface. It's dropped on a set of shapes chosen to represent whatever you're likely to meet in that sport.
For a bike helmet, those shapes are a rounded dome and a curb edge — a rock in the road, the corner of the pavement. Sensible, for cycling.
For a riding helmet, the standard swaps in something a cyclist never meets: a hazard anvil, a sharp edged shape that stands in for a hoof, a rail, a jump standard, a fence post. It's the reason riding helmets are built with the harder outer shell they have, and there is nothing like it anywhere in the bicycle standard.

Same limit. Different shapes. And the shapes are the sport.
For the detail-minded: on the plain flat surface the bicycle standard is actually the slightly higher drop of the two. It was never a contest of which helmet is stronger — it's a question of what each one was asked about.
Your riding helmet has been asked a question your bike helmet has never been asked — what happens when you meet something with an edge on it, at ground level, around a horse?
Researchers at Virginia Tech spent a long time watching real riding footage to work out how to rate equestrian helmets properly. What they found is that the back of the head matters more in riding than it does in most sports — more than in cycling, certainly.
That's why they rate riding helmets on a completely separate system from bike helmets, and why they'll tell you the two sets of scores can't be compared. They even measured how firm the sand, dirt and grass are at real equestrian venues, so the test surfaces match the footing you actually ride on.
As the lab's director put it: football is played on grass, hockey is played on ice — and neither of those is much like an arena.
Your riding helmet is shaped by that research. Your bike helmet is shaped by different research, for a different sport, and it's very good at that one.
This is the easy one.
US Equestrian's rules list the helmet certifications accepted in licensed competition, and there are four of them: ASTM F1163 (certified through SEI), PAS 015, VG1, and Snell. A bike helmet is certified to a different standard — the CPSC one — and it isn't on the list. Same story at Pony Club and at eventing venues.
And it isn't only the show ring. Most barns require a helmet to ride, full stop — for lessons, for schooling, for hacking out. So a bike helmet isn't eligible headgear in the places you actually ride, for you or for a junior in your care. One fewer decision to make.
Look inside the helmet for a tag naming ASTM F1163, PAS 015, VG1 or Snell. If it's there, you're good to go in the ring. If there's no tag, it isn't riding headgear — whatever it says on the box.
The American equestrian standard, certified through SEI. Flat anvil plus the equestrian hazard anvil, tested hot, cold and after water immersion.
The British standard. Adds a penetration test that the American standard does not include.
The European standard now used in place of the older EN 1384. Also includes a penetration test.
Higher flat-anvil drop, a penetration test, a lateral crush test, and a tighter force limit than the others. E2021 supersedes E2016.
A real federal safety standard, and a good one for cycling. It has never appeared on the list of headgear accepted for riding.
Here's something true of every helmet, riding or cycling, at every price: the protective layer works by crushing. That's the design. It absorbs energy by giving way, and once it's given way, it doesn't spring back.
Which means a helmet that's taken a knock has already done its job. It's earned its retirement.
Every brand we carry says the same thing in almost the same words. Troxel: "Your helmet is only designed for ONE impact." One K extends it to dropping the helmet on a hard surface. Ovation puts it simply — a helmet involved in an accident should be replaced and not worn again.
It's the cheapest safety upgrade there is, and the one riders most often skip. If your helmet has hit the ground since you bought it — even off the tailgate — it's time.
Worth knowing, because they get repeated a lot and they'll only cost you money:
It isn't the harness. Bike helmets are already tested to stay on your head — there's a test for the straps holding, and a test for the helmet not rolling off. So is your riding helmet. Both are covered. Choose on fit, not on how many straps you can count.
It isn't puncture resistance. Neither the American riding standard nor the bicycle standard includes a test for something pointed going through the shell. If that particular protection matters to you, look for Snell, VG1 or PAS 015 on the tag — those three do test for it.
A certification is a floor, not a ranking. Every helmet clears it. If you'd like to go further:
Snell is the strictest of the standards commonly seen on riding helmets — it tests more, and holds helmets to a tighter limit. Check the version on the tag: E2021 is current, and US Pony Club now considers helmets marked E2016 out of date.
Rotational systems like MIPS are designed for angled knocks rather than straight-on ones, which is closer to how most real falls arrive.
Virginia Tech star ratings let you compare riding helmets against each other. Just don't compare them against a bike helmet's stars — different system, different sport.
On every helmet in the tack room:
There's a date stamped inside your helmet, and it's easy to assume that's your clock. It isn't — that's the date the helmet was made. A helmet can sit in a warehouse, then on a shelf, for a year or more before anyone buys it, so the stamp says nothing about how long yours has been in service.
The guidance that matters is measured from when you bought it. Troxel, for instance, recommends replacing at least every five years from the date of purchase — and brands vary, so check yours.
So do this today: write the date you bought it inside the helmet, next to the manufacture stamp. Ten seconds now, and you'll never have to guess later — or pass a helmet down to a younger rider without knowing what you're passing on.
That's a decision we make before anything reaches the shelf, so whichever one you pick, the certification is handled.
