Turnout Blankets

Pick a Turnout Weight for Your Weather

1. 1

   Light, 0–100g

Rain and wind on mild days, and a layer for the in-between weather.

2. 2

   Medium, 150–250g

The everyday winter turnout for many unclipped horses.

3. 3

   Heavy, 300–400g

Cold nights, clipped horses and horses that feel the cold.

Shelter, age, body condition and a thin coat all shift the answer, so check under the blanket and adjust as the forecast changes.

For a horse that is hard on blankets, look at the denier: the weight of the fibers in the outer fabric. A higher denier, such as 1200D or 1680D, is tougher. A high neck or detachable hood adds cover, and cross surcingles and leg straps or arches keep the turnout in place when your horse rolls.
