Something new · Rider to rider
The tall boot that fits your calf and keeps going, in riders' own words.
Riders replacing Heritage Contour field or dress boots tell us where they landed: graded calf fits from Tredstep, everyday Mountain Horse Sovereigns, and stretch-panel Shires Moretta Giannas. Here is what they say, with what Heritage Contour does well in fairness below.

The short version
Tredstep Donatello III Field, Shires Moretta Gianna and Mountain Horse Sovereign are the field boots riders try first when replacing Heritage Contours, and Tredstep Medici II and Mountain Horse Serenade are the dress boots.

Riders tell us what mattered when they replaced a pair of Heritage boots: how long the boots lasted, how fast they broke in, and whether the calf and foot fit. They say it better than we can.

Ariat Heritage boots
My go to for everyday tall boots are Ariat Heritage. Mostly because I'm 5 foot nothing (5') tall and they fit. In recent years they don't last quite as long.
Ariat Heritage boots
I'm a huge Ariat boot fan and I did the Heritage boots for a while, but they just, they don't last as long.
Ariat Heritage long boots
I've had two pairs of the Ariat Heritage long boots - quality of the second no where near the first but were comfy
Mountain Horse High Riders
I have tried them on in the shop but I have always ended up buying the mountain horse high riders the ariats always feel and look flimsy in comparison, I am into my 5th year with the mountain horse boots only had each zip done once in that time and they look perfect and are so comfy.
Riders say Donatello and Sovereign boots broke in quickly, in a few rides, and one retired a Mountain Horse pair after more than 1,000 rides.
Tredstep Medici boots
These are best boots I have tried even better than my custom boots. There was very little if any break in time. I am a Tredstep fan and have worn their Donatello boots up to now so I know how important it is to fit them as tight as possible at the start. They eased out over the first few days and are now really comfortable. Super delighted with them and would highly recommend them
Donatello boots
I love my tredstep donatellos. They fit normal, haven't had any trouble with the zippers, they broke in quickly and are very comfortable.
I usually start breaking in a new pair of boots by riding them on a long hack. These were no different. After two more serious flat rides, the Sovereigns were good to go!
Mountain Horse boots
I will speak from personal experience and tell you that those Mountain Horse boots are AWESOME! I just retired mine after having them over 5 years and putting 1,000+ rides in them. The take little to no break-in time, and are super comfortable and elegant looking without the giant price tag.
Riders with a wide foot, a larger calf or a short, slim leg say Tredstep, Mountain Horse Serenade and Sovereign fit when Heritage had not.
Tredstep Donatello boots
I hope you get a good suggestion because I have the same wide foot problem, compounded by wide calves. The plus size versions of Ovation and Tuff Rider are not wide enough in the toe. Neither is the Ariat Heritage Contour II. A fellow boarder recently bought a pair of Tredstep Donatello field boots. She also tried on the Ariat Heritage Contour boots and said the Tredsteps were wider in the foot, but she didn't think they could be called wide.
Ariat have always been my go to boot, they've always been a good fit for my muscular calves. I'm now wearing MH Serenade boots as they are a better fit for my foot issues, they also fit a larger calf and elastic inserts the full length of the back so a little extra stretch.
Mountain Horse tall boots
I bought my Mountain Horse tall boots this Spring and love them. Happy to say they are holding up really well – I ride 6 days a week. I am short and have slim calves but I like the foot to be a bit on the wider side cause I can not stand shoes/boots that hurt my feet.
Mountain Horse Sovereign boots

| Heritage Contour II Field Zip, everyday | Each is a field boot with a back zipper. Donatello grades the calf, Gianna adds stretch panels and Belmont has a memory foam foot bed. | |
| Kinsley Dress or Devon, for the dressage ring | Medici II and Serenade are the closest in tier. Belmont Dress is the lower tier, with soft leather uppers and a Spanish top. | |
| Heritage Contour in an X-Wide calf | Flex Sport is listed in XX Wide, Sovereign in X Wide, and Tredstep grades up to Full Plus Plus Plus. | |
| Short height or a slim calf | Donatello III comes in short, regular and tall heights, and a rider says the Sovereign teen size suits a short, slim leg. | |
| A first field or dress boot on a budget | Dublin's field and dressage boots sit at the lowest tier among these picks. |
Fit tip
Measure your calf at its widest point, your boot height and your foot, then compare all three with each maker's chart. A Heritage size does not convert to a Tredstep, Mountain Horse or Moretta size.Graded calf

Tredstep Donatello III Field Boot is the closest carried field boot to try if you want your calf fit graded, because Tredstep cuts Donatello III in short, regular and tall heights and grades the calf from XX Slim to Full Plus Plus Plus. It is full grain leather with a pro flex design for ankle flexion, elastic lacing on the field boot, a Coolmax-lined insole and a YKK back zipper.
Tredstep Medici II is the step up: calfskin outside with a full grain leather lining, patent piping, a European toe profile and a curved anatomical calf fit, in field and dress versions. The Tredstep tall boot sizing guide walks through the grades.
In fairness
Tredstep fits closely rather than loosely. If you want more give at the calf, the stretch-panel and wide-calf boots below are the better start.Shop Tredstep field boots

Mountain Horse Sovereign Field Boot is the everyday field boot to try if you want a traditional Spanish-cut boot with a leather lining and a steel shank. Mountain Horse builds the Sovereign with a full-length YKK Vislon back zipper and a snap keeper, a heel cover that guards the zipper, nine sets of eyelets with fixed elastic lacing, a removable ShockX Advanced insole and Prolaze-Flexnotch technology for a comfortable heels-down position.
Mountain Horse Serenade Dressage Boot is the dress version, with a Spanish-cut top and a forward-placed zipper.
In fairness
Mountain Horse notes that some riders find the Sovereign foot runs a bit large, so size down in the foot, not in calf width or height.Mountain Horse Sovereign Field Boot
I, for one, can’t wait to wear them at my first show next month, and when my current every day pair of boots wears out, there is no question that I will invest in another pair of Mountain Horse Sovereign Field Boots.

Shires Moretta Gianna Leather Field Boots are the stretch-panel field boot to try: hard-wearing leather inner calves with softer stretch outer panels that hug the leg, and an ActiveFlex insole. Ovation Flex Sport Field Boot is listed in XX Wide with a stretch panel at the back zipper, and TuffRider Belmont Field Boots have a Spanish top and a memory foam foot bed.
Measure your calf at its widest point, your boot height and your foot, and compare all three with each maker's chart before you order.

Tredstep Medici II Dress Boot, Mountain Horse Serenade Dressage Boot and TuffRider Belmont Dress Boots are the dress boots to try when you are comparing against Ariat's Kinsley Dress. Medici II Dress has a calfskin outer and a curved anatomical calf fit. Serenade has a Spanish-cut top and a forward-placed YKK Vislon zipper, and Belmont Dress has soft leather uppers, a Spanish top and a back zipper with a snap closure.
Dress boots add one decision to the field boot choice: a clean front or a Spanish top. Measure calf, height and foot first, then filter the shelf.
Mountain Horse dress boots
While they're not high end, I cannot kill my Mountain Horse dress boots. Cannot. I got them on sale years ago and I am so impressed by their longevity. I believe they're the Opus boot.
I bought an inexpensive pair of the Tuff Rider Belmont dress boots, and they are freaking amazing.

Riders who wore Heritage Contours often had good reasons, and some still apply. Ariat's own listing, read in October 2026, shows a leather lining, a YKK zip with keeper, a Spanish-cut topline and an All Day Cushioning insole.
If you are around 5 feet tall, riders name Heritage as the boot that fit them, and Ariat lists a short height.
If you ride most days, riders report Contours still going after 4 years at 4 to 6 days a week, and field boots lasting six years.
If your calf is wide but your foot is average, Ariat lists calf widths from X-Slim to X-Wide, in one foot width, B (Medium).
If you want a boot that breaks in to a comfortable fit, some riders say Heritage took a while and then became lovely.
Rider reports vary widely, from Contours still going after 4 years of riding 4 to 6 days a week to pairs a rider says did not last as long as earlier Heritage boots. Wear depends on days per week, barn use and care, so compare construction, such as the full grain leather and YKK back zipper on Tredstep Donatello III.
CloseAriat lists the Heritage Contour II Field Zip with calf widths up to X-Wide in a single foot width, B (Medium), so check its current listing against your measurements. A rider with a wide foot says the Heritage Contour II toe is not wide enough and that Tredstep Donatello is wider in the foot. For calf room, compare Mountain Horse Sovereign in X Wide, Ovation Flex Sport in XX Wide and Tredstep's graded widths.
CloseMeasure rather than convert. Tredstep Donatello III is cut in short, regular and tall heights with graded calf widths, and Ariat cuts the Heritage Contour with its own heights and widths, so a size in one does not map to a size in the other. Compare your calf, height and foot with the Tredstep chart, then try the grade that fits.
CloseTredstep Donatello III Field Boot is the closest carried field boot for riders who want a graded fit, Shires Moretta Gianna Leather Field Boots add stretch panels at the calf, and Mountain Horse Sovereign is the traditional Spanish-cut choice. Pick by calf width and height first, then try the boot on with your usual breeches and socks.
CloseReplacing Heritage Contours is one decision in a wider boot and gear change. These related guides cover other Ariat boots and gear, head-to-head comparisons with Mountain Horse, Ovation, TuffRider, Shires Moretta and Tredstep, paddock and winter boots, and sun shirts for the warm months.
