Boots that outlasted their Ariats

One rider replaced two worn-out pairs of Ariats with TuffRiders that were going strong three years later, and a lifelong TuffRider paddock buyer got three years from her last pair.

TuffRider boots

When I wore through two pairs of Ariats in less than 18 months each, I admit I didn't take white glove care of them, but I did clean and polish them. To be fair, I bought them as "everyday boots," though. When I replaced them with a pair of Tuffriders, yes, the Tuffriders are a bit uglier, but I haven't really taken very good care of them at all, and they are going strong after three years.

TuffRider paddock boots

These boots are great. I have been riding for 10 years and I have always bought tuff rider paddock boots because other boots are just too expensive and I don't want to spend a lot of money on boots that I'm just going to grow out of. My last pair lasted me 3 years and they were still in great shape. I ride 4-5 days a week and these boots held up really well. I definitely recommend these.

Soft, comfortable, and a calf that fits

Riders call the Belmont amazing, the Plus Rider a pleasant surprise in fit and quality, and a TuffRider buyer reports a calf larger than usual.

Belmont Dress Boots

I bought an inexpensive pair of the Tuff Rider Belmont dress boots, and they are freaking amazing.

TuffRider boots

i love these boots, these are my third pair. They hold up well to hard use and each lasts about 3 years on near daily use on several horses. i buy ahead so that I always have a new pair ready to go. The calf size is a bit larger than normal, which I love, so I can buy a regular calf, and then I have a pair of wide that I use for my winter riding for heavier socks and breeches. These are essentially the same boots as the old Baker plaid boots that Tuffrider sold for a while and I was so glad I found them.

Plus Rider boots

I know someone who bought the TuffRider plus size boots to spare her show boots and was pleasantly surprised at the fit and quality.

TuffRider Plus Rider and Mountain Horse

I will second Mountain Horse. As a bonus, their wides in winter boots are the only off the rack wide boots besides Tuff Rider Plus Rider which fit my calves when I am at a weight higher than 40lbs under my ideal.

Ovation's Moorland country boot for everyday riding

Riders call the Moorland tall enough to ride in and comfortable for daily work, and one rider names Ovation as a brand whose sizing she trusts online.

Moorland country boots

I really like my Ovation Moorland boots. They are tall enough to ride in, but still have a good sole on them for mucking stalls and running around the farm comfortably. They are also waterproof.
Rider review · 2016

Moorland country boots

I have a pair of Ovation Moorland boots. This newer incarnation is a bit taller in length than my pair from several years ago, so they end up being tall enough for me to school in. They are definitely waterproof and comfy to wear for mucking, bathing, etc.

Moorland II Highrider country boot

I have always had a good experience on this site and I love the Ovation Moorland II Highrider boots for everyday riding. This is my third pair. They are comfortable and sturdy.

Mountain Horse and Ovation

The only boots I am able to buy online and trust the size are Mountain Horse and Ovation.

TuffRider

TuffRider tall boots: Belmont, Baroque and Starter for schooling

TuffRider's Belmont and Baroque field boots are leather schooling boots, and the Starter Back Zip is the synthetic entry boot. The Baroque has elastic laces at the ankle and a memory foam footbed, and the Plus Rider adds a wider calf with two elastic gussets.

Riders are plain about what TuffRider is: a comfortable, easy-on-the-budget schooling boot.

In fairness

TuffRider's footwear warranty covers manufacturing defects for 3 months, case by case, against Ariat's 12 months. Riders say TuffRider is for schooling, not for hard knocking or the show ring.

TuffRider schooling boots

Basically, if you buy these looking for a nice-looking schooling boot that is very easy on the budget and comfortable to wear, you’ll be pleased. If you buy them thinking you’re getting a nice show boot, or something hard-knocking that will last forever, you’ll be disappointed. That said, if they changed to a square toe and upped the quality of the materials a bit, I’d buy another pair to show in and ditch the Monacos in a heartbeat.

TuffRider boots

I switched to tuffriders for a cheapie schooling boot a few years ago and haven't looked back. They are extremely soft leather so very comfortable. The trade off being that they don't last very long—I generally get 8 months to a year out of a pair, but granted I abuse them.

Ovation's Flex Sport Field Boot is the schooling boot, in soft-touch cowhide with stretch panels at the calf and a flex ankle. The Sofia Field Boot is the entry tier, with a full grain leather foot and a stretch synthetic shaft in slim, regular and wide calf.

For barn days, riders reach for the Moorland II Highrider, tall enough to ride in and waterproof for mucking out.

In fairness

The Sofia is Ovation's entry boot and the Flex Sport its schooling boot; compare the leather and lining in each description before you choose.

TuffRider and Ovation paddock boots: Starter, Belmont, Tuscany, Quantum

Paddock boots are the everyday boot that wears hardest, so expect to replace them on a schedule, whatever the brand.

What Ariat boots do well

We'd rather you buy the right boot than the wrong one from us. Riders who stay with Ariat have good reasons.

If you want a longer footwear warranty, Ariat lists 12 months against TuffRider's 3 months for manufacturing defects.

If you ride in a leather Heritage Contour II every day and it fits your foot, try any new boot beside it before you retire the old pair.

If you need a boot for the show ring, riders describe TuffRider as a schooling boot first.

If a synthetic Ascent already fits your budget, compare it with the Starter and Sofia on material before you decide.
