Something new · Rider to rider
Paddock boots that keep going, with room for your foot, in riders' own words.
Riders who wore Ariat Heritage, Devon and Scout paddocks tell us about soles that separated, zips that gave out and the pairs they bought next from Shires Moretta, Tredstep, Dublin, TuffRider and Mountain Horse. Here is what they say, with what Ariat does well in fairness below.

The short version
Shires Moretta Rosetta is the front-zip paddock riders try first after a Heritage Zip, and Tredstep, TuffRider and Dublin cover the lace-up, entry, waterproof and wide-foot pairs.

Riders tell us the sole, the zip and the years between pairs are what sent them looking, and they say it better than we can.

Ariat Heritage paddock boots
I bought a pair of the Ariat Heritage paddock boots a few years ago and they were a waste of money. They did not hold up at all, started coming apart and leaking along the sole.
Ariat Heritage paddock boots
I bought a pair of Heritage a few years ago and they were the first Ariats that didn't last a year. The sole separated.
Ariat H2O paddock boots
So then I tried Ariat again, with the H20 Gore boots. Result: more heartache, the sole disintegrated for no reason within six months.
Ariat Ascent paddock boots
Just wondered if anyone has had any joy with a warranty claim for a pair of Ariat boots? I bought a pair of Ascent Paddock boots last March from Equipt that were in like new condition. I love them but the soles started to come off in August and have been letting water in ever since.
Several riders who went back to lace-ups did so after a zip failed, which is why a lace-up sits among the picks.
Ariat zip paddock boots
I should add that the main reason I am leery of zippers is because I used to wear the Ariat zip-up paddock boots and those zippers broke on every pair, so I went back to lace-ups.
Ariat boots
I used to love Ariat boots - when they were made in the USA. They fit well, wore well, and lasted. Now, not so much.
Ariat paddock and field boots
I own a few pairs of Ariats, and I will not be purchasing more. I had both paddock and field boots. I used to love them, they were great quality and lasted many years. In recent years, I have replaced both my paddock and field boots with new Ariats and noticed a huge decline in quality, and changes in sizing.
Ariat boots
I had success getting them replaced but the replacements also were faulty. I haven't bought Ariat boots since and have had mates that found the quality poor.
These riders wear their paddocks most days, bathe horses in them and buy a second pair.
Dublin paddock boots
I'm on my second pair. The first ones lasted through abuse nearly everyday for over 4 years. There's no breaking-in, just immediate comfort.
Tredstep paddock boots
The Tredstep boots are FANTASTIC. Mine are about a year old now, I wear them 5-6x a week, sometimes bathe horses.
Shires Moretta boots
I had Ariats for years but I was becoming less impressed with the quality. I've just checked my emails and it looks like I bought my first Shires pair in September 2023, they have been abused and are still trooping on and on. P.S. I don't wear them in proper mud (I use wellies too) but they've certainly coped with coming across muddy patches out walking or in fields in non-winter months after a bit of rain
Shires Moretta Clio Paddock Boots
These are our second pair. The first pair lasted ages and my daughter wanted the same again!

Fit tip
Measure your foot at its widest point, compare it with your current pair and check each maker's size chart before you order.Everyday zips
Shires Moretta Rosetta and Clio and Dublin Foundation Zip II and Altitude Zip are the everyday zip paddocks riders try after a Heritage Zip.
Rosetta is full grain leather with YKK front zippers, a wicking lining and an ActiveFit insole with an Impact Support System. Clio is a quick-clean synthetic with a YKK front zipper, rubber soles and steel shanks. Dublin Altitude Zip is a leather-look PU with a high-arch outsole and an in-built shank, and Foundation Zip II adds full grain leather and an EVA cradle footbed. Riders tell us their Dublin paddocks clean up easily and wear nearly daily.
In fairness
Clio and Altitude sit a tier below Rosetta and Foundation, so choose by how many days a week the boots work.Dublin Altitude boots
I have Dublin Altitude. I only got them in January but they've been worn nearly daily, and are still perfect. They clean really nicely too. I use them for yard work and riding because I'm too lazy to change, to be honest.
Dublin Foundation Zip Paddock Boots II
This boot surprised me with its quality for the price. It felt like one of the early Ariat Heritage Paddock Boots with the way it was constructed.

Tredstep Medici III and Donatello III are the leather paddocks riders try when a zip or a sole has let them down, in lace, front-zip and double-zip versions.
Medici III has a calfskin upper, a leather lining and a Coolmax footbed, and you can keep the leather supple with beeswax. Donatello III Lace is the lower-priced leather lace-up of the two.
In fairness
Leather needs a little care, so wipe off mud after each ride.Shop Tredstep paddock boots

TuffRider Como Waterproof and Mountain Horse Veganza Zip and Arctica Lace are the paddocks to try for wet barn days and wash racks.
Como has waterproof full grain leather uppers, a YKK front zipper with elastic gussets, a memory foam inner sole and a steel shank. Arctica Lace adds a waterproof membrane foot, 3M Thinsulate insulation and Ice Hook Technology for icy ground, and Veganza Zip is a synthetic, vegan-friendly paddock with a front zipper and a removable extra insole.
In fairness
Waterproofing is only part of the story, so look at the sole and the zip too.Ariat leather paddock boots
About 2 years ago I bought a pair of leather waterproof All Terrain type paddock boots from Ariat. I wear them a lot for work. The waterproofing finally died.
Mountain Horse short boots
I gave up on Ariat short boots as they just fell apart and bought short Mountain Horse (the waterproof model). I love them, and cheaper than Ariat. I'll be buying the country boot this winter to replace my Ariat Braemer which strangely have lasted 6 years. Just about still waterproof but the lining is coming apart and they are hard to get on - and harder to get off!
Room for the foot
Dublin, Shires Moretta Rosetta and Mountain Horse paddocks are the boots wide-footed riders name when Ariat paddocks run narrow for them.
Mountain Horse Veganza Zip has a removable extra insole that, taken out, makes the boot two half sizes larger, and Dublin Foundation Zip II has an EVA cradle footbed and a punched toe cap. Riders tell us these fit wide feet, and the four quotes below describe how.
In fairness
Riders chose these for room, so if you want a close, snug fit, try a pair on first.Shires Moretta Rosetta Paddock Boots
These boots are the only boots that comfortably fit my very wide foot. All areas and other brands end up being quite painful. Very good value for money, this will be my fourth and fifth pair that I have purchased. I stock up because I'm fearful, I won't be able to get them in the future
Dublin paddock boots
I think I've had four or five pairs of these boots and have loved every single pair. I have a wider foot and higher instep and these just fit perfectly.
Mountain Horse short boots
I love Mountain Horse classic rider short boots with half chaps. I have wide chunky feet and they fit perfectly.
Dublin Venturer boots
These boots are roomy for my large feet. I don't like Ariats because they are too narrow for me. These are just perfect. The leather is supple and the zipper is smooth and stays put. Very happy with my purchase.

Shop all ›Warranty
Ariat states a 12-month warranty on boots bought from Ariat.com, and Shires states up to 12 months on Moretta boots, with zips, fittings and buckles named in the Moretta text.
A warranty tells you what a maker will look at, not how long the boots last. Check each maker's current terms and keep your order confirmation when you buy.
In fairness
We'd rather you buy the right boot than the wrong one from us. Ariat paddocks suit plenty of riders, and these points are worth weighing.
If your Devon Pros or Terrain H2O are still working for you, there is no reason to switch; this guide is for pairs that have worn out.
If you want a choice of widths, Ariat lists the Heritage Zip in B (Medium) and C (Wide).
If you stand all day in a waterproof lace-up, Terrain H2O is a country boot, a different category from a schooling paddock, so compare like with like.
If your Ariats have lasted for years, you know how they fit, so compare a new pair against them before you switch.
Riders report anywhere from about a year to four or more years from a pair, depending on how many days a week they wear them and how they care for them. Wipe off mud after each ride, and keep leather paddocks such as Tredstep Medici III supple with beeswax.
CloseA zip takes the strain every time you pull a boot on and off, so fit at the ankle and instep matters. Choose a boot you can zip without pulling, such as a Shires Moretta Rosetta, Dublin Foundation Zip II or TuffRider Como, each with a YKK front zipper, or a lace-up such as Tredstep Donatello III Lace.
CloseOne rider told us her first Shires pair, bought in September 2023, was still going in May 2025 after hard use. Rosetta is full grain leather and Clio is a quick-clean synthetic, both with a YKK front zipper and steel shanks. Try the style that matches your riding and compare the fit with your current pair.
CloseLook for a waterproof upper or membrane, a front zipper with elastic gussets and a sole with grip. TuffRider Como has waterproof full grain leather and an elastic-gusseted YKK front zipper, and Mountain Horse Arctica Lace has a waterproof membrane foot.
CloseRiders weighing a switch from Ariat also read these guides to compare boots, half chaps and breeches across the brands we carry.
