What riders say about their turnout sheets

Riders tell us a good turnout sheet fits well, keeps the horse dry and lasts for years.

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

This turnout sheet is very well made: all the straps, hooks and buckles are quality and sewn in with care. The shoulder gusset and large tail flap really help. I am going to buy another one for my other horse.

    Amigo Horse Blankets

I love the Amigo rain sheet for our rainy weather here in the Pacific Northwest. Theses sheets fit well and last several years.

    Pessoa Alpine 1200D Turnout Sheet

This is by far the nicest turnout sheet I have ever purchased. It fits well, keeps my horse dry and warm and most important, looks fantastic.

Horze Avalanche Light Weight Turnout Sheet

This is my second Avalanche rain sheet. I loved the first one, but the lining is wearing out after 3 years, so it was time for a replacement. The sheet offers protection and keeps the horse dry, is durable, and stays centered. Also I do not have any rubs from the blanket. If the Avalanche Pro is as durable as the first sheet, I will be very happy. This sheet seems to fit longer over the rump. I would recommend it for protection against rainy, windy weather. It is a little pricey, but worth it in the long run.

How a good turnout sheet keeps your horse dry all year

The six sections below cover what a turnout sheet is and when a horse needs one, the temperatures it suits, how long it stays waterproof, how tough the shell should be, how to layer under it, and whether to choose a neck.

    The sheet

What is a turnout sheet, and when does a horse need one?

A turnout sheet is a waterproof, breathable outer with 0 grams of fill: it keeps rain, wind and mud off without adding warmth, and a rain sheet is the same thing by another name. It sits at the bottom of the fill tiers below, one step under a lightweight turnout blanket of 50 to 100 g.

Sheets like the Amigo Ripstop 900 Original 0g and the Equinavia Norse Turnout Sheet are built for turnout, with leg or fillet straps and a tail flap. Riders tell us a good one stays waterproof, fits well and holds up on horses that are hard on blankets.

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

I have used Weatherbeeta products for decades. They are made extremely well and hold up to all sorts of conditions that horses can put them through. They wash and dry great. Some of my horses blankets and sheets are over thirty years old. Granted, they are not used every day all year but used through enough bad weather that they have proven their worth. They aren’t the cheapest blankets and rain sheets out there but they hold up and look good doing it.

    The temperature

What temperature is a turnout sheet for?

A turnout sheet is the layer for wet weather above freezing: the University of Maine Extension chart puts a full-coated horse in a rain sheet at 25 to 39°F if it is wet, and a clipped horse in a rain sheet or lightweight at 40 to 50°F. Above 40°F a dry, full-coated horse needs nothing at all.

Rain is the trigger more than the thermometer. Riders from the Gulf Coast to western Canada tell us cold rain in the 50s can chill an older horse in a bare sheet, so they reach for a fleece-lined sheet or a lightweight on those days.

    CoatTemperatureBlanket
Full coat40 degrees F and aboveNo blanket needed
Full coat25 to 39 degrees FNo blanket, or a rain sheet if it is wet
Clipped40 to 50 degrees FRain sheet or lightweight blanket

    What Riders Say

    Horze Avalanche Rain Fleece

This is the perfect rain sheet for our Gulf Coast changeable autumn weather. The fleece lining makes it perfect for rainy and chilly days. It's warmer than just a bare rain sheet; a plain sheet can leave the older horses chilled. The fleece adds just enough but not too much. The older horses never seem too hot or too chilled in this when the weather is in the 50's and raining. It's especially good when the rain continues for several days with cold nights.

    Horze Avalanche Turnout Blanket 150g

I bought this for the fall/spring months in North Western Alberta for a lighter option, much like an insulated rain sheet. I absolutely LOVE the blanket - the design and appearance is gorgeous. It does fit large, but that's minor. My Thoroughbred is usually a 78 - 81 and the 78 is almost too big on her, while in other avalanche blankets (fleece sheet), the 81 is almost too small. I find the inconsistency frustrating and the price a little high, but absolutely love the blanket regardless.

    Waterproof

How long does a turnout sheet stay waterproof?

A good turnout sheet stays waterproof for several seasons, and a reproofer brings back the coating when water stops beading. The shell's coating and taped seams keep water out; detergents, tears and years of sun and mud wear them down, so wash with a product made for blankets and reproof after cleaning.

Makers back the shell differently: Weatherbeeta covers the outer of its turnouts for 3 years and Amigo carries a 2-year standard warranty, as each maker states it. Riders tell us their best sheets have stayed dry on destructive horses for a year or more, and that a well-cared-for one lasts many seasons.

    What Riders Say

    Rhino Horse Blankets

I've bought SO many turnout sheets and this is the first one that I've bought that has yet to have waterproof problems after a year, no rips or fringes and I have it on my most destructive horse! Love the 3 belly straps, fits well and doesnt cause rubs for my high withered TB. Only complaint is I think for the price it would be nice if it had a different front closure (has the standard surcingle closure), but it fits my horse well and I've had zero issues with it. Will buy another for my two other horses that are due for new sheets!

    Pessoa Horse Blankets

I bought this blanket for my TB mare in 2007, meaning it's now on its SIXTH season. I've re-waterproofed it with Scotchguard spray several times just to be safe, but I've never noticed it leaking. Granted, my horse isn't too hard on her blankets and isn't one for standing in the pouring rain, but most blankets will eventually rip or start to fall apart. Not this one. I thought it was a little pricey when I bought it, but it has absolutely been worth the money. I also bought the Alpine waterproof sheet that year, which is also still going strong. Great products!

    The shell

How tough should a turnout sheet's shell be?

Choose a shell of about 1200 denier or more for a horse turned out in a group, and 600 to 900 denier for a quiet horse alone. Denier measures the weight of the outer fabric's yarn, and the carried lines below run from 600 to 1800, many in ripstop weaves that stop a small tear from spreading.

A sheet takes the full force of rain, rolling and fence posts with nothing under it, so the shell and hardware matter more than on a blanket worn under one. Riders tell us their favorite sheets fit well and last for years.

    Rambo Horse Blankets

IMO Rambo is easily the best when it comes to fit and waterproofing. All of my grown up horses have had them as their main turnout sheets. My kiddo has a Rhino turnout sheet with a detachable hood that he'll obviously grow out of. It works very well, keeps him dry and for a much lower price tag.

    Layering

A turnout sheet over a liner, a fleece or a stable blanket?

A turnout sheet doubles as the waterproof outer of a layering system: add a liner of 100 to 300 grams, a fleece or a stable blanket underneath as the weather cools, and take it out again when it warms. That way one shell covers the year.

Riders tell us a sheet works well as the outer over a liner or a cooler when the weather turns chilly. Check that the under-layer is sized to the sheet and doesn't bunch at the shoulder, and step up to a mediumweight if the layers come out of the cupboard every week.

    What Riders Say

    Rambo Horse Blankets

I love my Rambo stuff. I do use their 100g turnout blankets and turnout sheets (although Phoenix's pre-dates the liners) with a selection of 100 through 300g blanket liners. Seriously the best. The liners are so easy to throw in the washing machine too. Last winter I also expanded into neck rugs and they are great too. I think my only complaint might be that sometimes I get some static.

I love this product, great for cooling of the horse after the ride. Nice and thick for cooler weather I have been using this also under the rain sheet, keeps him nice and dry underneath. I recommend this product!

    The neck

Turnout sheet with a neck, a high neck or a standard cut?

Pick a turnout sheet with a high or combo neck if rain runs down your horse's shoulders in a standard cut, and a standard neck if he has shelter. A detachable neck, such as on the TuffRider 1200 D Comfy Detachable Neck Turnout Sheet, comes off for milder days.

Mutton-withered and older horses are the classic case: a standard neckline gaps and lets rain in at the withers. Fit a neck cover or hood to the sheet's own size, since a hood that is too long can ride up over the ears.

    What Riders Say

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

I have a mutton withered, senior Arabian. The "standard necklines" on the majority of turnouts don't fit him and rain will seep down his shoulders. After heavy rains his forequarter is often soaked. This turnout sheet fits him beautifully and I'm probably going to order the same style with medium fill for the winter months.

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

It is a little long by sizing (we bought size large to fit on 75 rain sheet). It goes up over one of our horses ears, so we have to fold it down. But it fits the rain sheet good. Weatherbeeta is our go to for sheets and blankets. I am done throwing away our money to other brands that fit tight, tear easy, or roll up the second they get wet.

      Questions riders ask

      Turnout sheet FAQ

What is the difference between a turnout sheet and a rain sheet?

None in practice. Both names mean a waterproof turnout outer with no fill, built to keep a horse dry outside.

Does a turnout sheet keep a horse warm?

Only by keeping him dry and out of the wind. A sheet has no fill, so it adds little warmth; for a horse that is cold as well as wet, choose a lightweight of 50 to 100 grams or add a liner underneath.

Can a horse wear a turnout sheet all day?

Yes, a turnout sheet is built for turnout day and night. Check under it each day: warm, dry skin means it is right, and a damp or sweaty coat means the day is too warm for it.

      How do I re-waterproof a turnout sheet?

Clean it first with a blanket wash, then apply a reproofer, spray-on or wash-in, as the maker recommends. Check the maker's warranty terms before you use a product it does not name.

Temperature bands: University of Maine Cooperative Extension blanketing chart. Fill tiers: Horseware and Equinavia blanket weight guides. Warranty terms as stated by Weatherbeeta and Horseware.
