Kitting out your horse is easier when you know what each piece of gear is for. Here's a quick guide to the essentials, with links to everything we carry.
Horse blankets and coolers
Blanket weight is measured in grams of fill. A lightweight turnout or rain sheet (0 to 100g) keeps a horse dry without adding much warmth; a mediumweight (roughly 150 to 250g) covers most cold days; a heavyweight (300g and up) is for hard cold or a clipped horse. Clipping, body condition and whether your horse lives in or out all shift the choice, so try our blanket weight calculator or read the horse blanket guide. Then shop lightweight, mediumweight and heavyweight turnouts, stable blankets and coolers from Amigo, Rambo, Weatherbeeta and Horseware, or start at the Blanket Center.
Saddle pads and tack
Match the pad to the saddle and the discipline: a close contact or all-purpose pad under a jumping saddle, a square dressage pad under a dressage saddle, and a half pad when you need to fine-tune fit. Our saddle pad guide explains the shapes. You'll also find bridles and reins, bits from Herm Sprenger and Myler, girths and saddles from Pessoa and Henri de Rivel. Replacing stirrups? See our guide to safety stirrups.
Horse boots and leg care
Boots do different jobs. Open-front jumping boots protect the tendons while leaving the front of the leg free; brushing boots guard against a horse striking itself; bell boots cover the heel bulbs from overreaching. Veredus, Shires ARMA, Back on Track and EquiFit lead our horse boots, alongside bandages and wraps, grooming supplies and veterinary supplies.
Fly season
When the flies come out, a fly sheet or fly mask protects better than spray alone, especially for horses turned out during the day. Browse fly masks by style and size.
Tack of the Day has sold discounted horse tack and equipment since 2005, with new deals every morning at 6am and our 365-day return policy.
