Lightweight Turnout Blankets

A lightweight turnout puts 50 to 100 grams of fill under a waterproof shell: one step warmer than a sheet, so a clipped or thin-coated horse stays dry and comfortable on cool, wet fall and spring days without overheating.

What riders say about their lightweights

Riders tell us a good lightweight goes on easily, stays put and covers the in-between weather of fall and spring.

    Weatherbeeta Comfitec Essential Turnout 50g

This is the second one I have purchased. A great blanket for transitional temps, keeping mud off, or providing a little extra warmth to an unclipped horse. First one has held up well after several washings.

I love these blankets. I have one I've used for several years for another horse and wanted one for our new horse. These are the easiest blankets to put on and off and they stay put. I love that it's lightweight but I can layer for the cold days.

Weatherbeeta Comfitec Classic Combo Neck Lite Plus

I hve several of these blankets in light weight.( 2 in heavy.) Which is great for Texas weather. They hve held up pretty well, Velcro has stayed sticky, and they wear well on the horses no matter what they are doing. The only thing I wish they had would be a Velcro strap and an attachment to pull the neck back to where it would stay. I also love that I can use them as a outer layer as it gets colder and I am not swapping sheets and blankets on 10 different horses.

    Bucas Horse Blankets

The coldest weather in four decades has just hit our region. My boy - a senior who has never grown a thick coat - has been warm in this turnout for the last four days in wind chills as low as -17. This rug is lightweight, easy to clean, durable, and does not overheat my thin-coated horse in temperatures up to 50 degrees. I'll keep buying Bucas. Well worth the expense.

    The Lightweight Edit

How a lightweight keeps your horse comfortable on cool, wet days

The six sections below cover what the grams mean, the temperatures a lightweight suits, how it differs from a turnout sheet, which horses do best in one, when a liner beats the next weight up, and how tough the shell should be.

    The grams

How many grams is a lightweight turnout blanket?

A lightweight turnout blanket carries 50 to 100 grams of fill: Horseware and Equinavia put their light band at 0 to 100 g, and the University of Maine Extension at 60 to 100 g, with sheets at 0. Most lightweights come in 50 g or 100 g, like the Amigo 1200D Plus Turnout 50g and the Equinavia Norse Light Weight Turnout Blanket 100g.

Riders tell us 50 grams is the fill that is hard to find and easy to love: enough to take the chill off before a clip or in a wet climate, without the warmth of a mediumweight. A 100 g blanket sits at the top of the band. Look elsewhere if your horse needs warmth through nights in the teens; that is a mediumweight's job.

Weatherbeeta Comfitec Essential Plus Standard Neck Lite

I am using WeatherBeeta rugs (both turnout and fly ) for years. The ComFiTec 50g are mine absolute favourite. They are really waterproof, hold very well, best fill (50g) for our dump/wet climate. Most of all - they fit our pony perfectly. I wish Weatherbeeta would start making turnout rugs for mini horses as I cannot find a rug for our mini that would equal in quality to WeatherBeeta. I sincerely hope that the ComFiTec 50g turnout rugs will continue to be available in years to come!:)

Great quality rug. Good strong outer layer & with 50g fill, it is ideal to use before a clip & before it gets really cold. A perfect step up from a sheet. I never buy rugs unless they are Weatherbeeta. Great quality & a true to size fit.

    The temperature

What temperature is a lightweight blanket for?

A lightweight is the blanket for a clipped horse at about 40 to 50°F and for cool, wet days on a full-coated horse, by the University of Maine Extension blanketing chart below. At 25 to 39°F the chart puts a clipped horse in a light or midweight, and a full-coated horse moves into one only below about 25°F.

Treat the chart as a starting point: rain and wind make a horse feel colder than the thermometer says. Riders in mild climates, from California to the Pacific Northwest, tell us a lightweight covers most of their winter, and a draft cross can wear one on rainy summer days.

good quality, perfect fit for my pony. It is hard to find a light weight in a smaller size. So I spend a bit more money on the blanket but is was a good decision. Great blanket for California weather.

This blanket is beautiful. Perfect fit for my big16.2 draft cross.Lightweight for rainy summer days. Love the liner for when there is a chilly rain but still not cold enough for a turnout sheet. Waiting to see if it is durable - sure hope so because it is otherwise perfect for summer showers.

    Light or sheet

Lightweight turnout or a turnout sheet?

A turnout sheet keeps a horse dry with no fill; a lightweight adds 50 to 100 grams for a horse that is wet and a little cold. The fill tiers below show the step: a sheet is 0 g, and a lightweight sits in the first band of fill.

Riders tell us a 50 g turnout is the perfect step up from a sheet before a clip or a cold snap, and that a well-made lightweight feels as sturdy as a heavier blanket. Pick a sheet for an easy keeper with a full coat; pick a lightweight for a clipped horse, a senior or a horse that shivers in cold rain.

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

This is such a GREAT blanket to have in your fall arsenal. I far prefer a combo neck to a detachable neck - fewer points of potential pressure, irritation, or failure. The 50g weight is SO difficult to find in the US - it seems to be much more common with international brands, but it is ideal for the Pacific Northwest fall/winter weather. The value on this blanket design can't beat either. Having the shoulder gussets is a huge bonus and I don't mind the chest buckles vs clips that you get on the more expensive options. I'm personally super disappointed that this style has been discontinued by Weatherbeeta and hope they consider bringing it back. I believe I got the very last one in stock in a 75" anywhere in the country!!

    Weatherbeeta Horse Blankets

This is the best quality sheet I’ve bought to date. It’s really thoughtfully designed (even down to support padding over the withers) and for a lightweight product (ideal for Spring in MT!) it feels surprisingly reinforced and durable! Love the adjustable front snaps as well. My trainer actually complimented the quality of this blanket.

    Which horses

Which horses do best in a lightweight?

A lightweight suits a clipped horse in fall and spring, a senior or thin-coated horse on the first cold nights, and a full-coated horse in a mild or wet climate. It is too little for a clipped horse in deep winter and often too much for an easy keeper in a thick coat.

Small horses need the same thought. Lightweights come in pony sizes, like the Amigo Ripstop 900D Plus Pony Turnout 100g. On a pony that rubs easily, fit matters as much as fill.

Best fit of any blanket I own! Durable, lightweight, stays waterproof for AGES, and Weatherbeeta brand is the only brand I've found that doesn't give my pony weird rubs. And the patterns are adorable. I get compliments at every barn I've been to about them! LOVE that they carry a size 66!

    Add a liner

Add a liner to a lightweight, or buy the next weight?

A lightweight with liners covers more of the winter than one blanket alone: a 100 g turnout over a 100 g liner gives about 200 grams of fill, inside the mediumweight band, and a 300 g liner takes it to 400. Buy a mediumweight turnout blanket instead if the cold settles in for weeks.

Riders tell us a 100 g outer with a set of 100 to 300 g liners handles most weather, and that liners go in the washing machine more easily than a turnout. Check that the liner attaches to your outer and is sized to match it.

    Amigo Horse Blankets

We found an Amigo on sale that was 100 grams and 1200 denier exterior. It's a really nice blanket and compatible with the liners too. Currently I have Dani in her size 72 (100 gram) with liners 100 grams and 300 grams of the same size. Chance is a size 69 and I'll buy a 100 gram liner for him to make his blanket a 200 if ever needed.

    Rambo Horse Blankets

I love my Rambo stuff. I do use their 100g turnout blankets and turnout sheets (although Phoenix's pre-dates the liners) with a selection of 100 through 300g blanket liners. Seriously the best. The liners are so easy to throw in the washing machine too. Last winter I also expanded into neck rugs and they are great too. I think my only complaint might be that sometimes I get some static.

    The shell

How tough a shell does a lightweight need?

Choose a shell of about 1200 denier for a horse turned out with others, and 600 to 900 denier for a quiet horse alone. Denier measures the weight of the outer fabric's yarn, and the carried lines below run from 600 to 1800, many in ripstop weaves that stop a small tear from spreading.

A lightweight goes on and off more often than a heavyweight, so the hardware matters too: check the chest closures, the leg straps and the tail cord, and look for shoulder gussets on a horse that moves a lot in the field.

    Questions riders ask

    Lightweight turnout blanket FAQ

Is 100 grams a lightweight blanket?

Yes. Horseware and Equinavia both band lightweight at 0 to 100 grams of fill, and the University of Maine Extension at 60 to 100 grams, so a 100 g turnout is a lightweight.

What is the difference between a lightweight blanket and a turnout sheet?

Fill. A turnout sheet has a waterproof shell and no fill, so it keeps a horse dry without adding warmth; a lightweight adds 50 to 100 grams of fill for a horse that is also a little cold.

Is a 50 gram blanket warm enough?

For cool, wet days, yes. A 50 g turnout suits a clipped horse at about 40 to 50°F, or a full-coated horse in cold rain. Below that, add a liner or move to a mediumweight.

Can I put a lightweight over a liner?

Yes, if the liner fits under the outer and attaches to it. A 100 g lightweight over a 100 g liner gives about 200 grams of fill, the warmth of a mediumweight.
