Five things every barn needs, from the grooming box to the first-aid kit

01

Horse Boots & Shipping Boots

Protect the legs that carry you

Brushing boots guard against knocks from the other legs on the flat, open-front and tendon boots add strike protection for jumping, and bell or overreach boots cover the heels and help keep shoes on. For the trailer, travel boots cover from knee or hock to coronet band.

Bandages & Wraps

Wrap for work, wrap for the stall

Polo wraps give soft support and protection for schooling. Standing wraps over no-bow pads keep legs snug in the stall or on the trailer, and quick wraps go on in seconds. Wrap evenly and firmly, never tight, and practice before you need it.

Grooming

Everything for the grooming box

A good grooming kit keeps the coat healthy and lets you check his legs every day. Start with a curry to loosen dirt, flick it off with a dandy brush, finish with a soft body brush, and pick out the feet before and after every ride.

Vet, First Aid & Therapy

Be ready before you need it

Keep a first-aid kit in the barn and the trailer: vet wrap, wound spray, a salve and a clean pair of scissors. Ice boots cool hard-working legs after a big day, and a grazing muzzle helps an easy keeper on rich grass.

  • Ovation Professional Ribbed Hook and Loop Bell Boot

    ★★★★★
My horse is quite talented when it comes to losing shoes. These bell boots are great to double up and greatly increase the odds of keeping his shoes on. They are easy to put on and seem to last a few months - better than most other bell boots I’ve tried.
    Tini, VAVerified Buyer
  • Shires FreeGraze Deluxe Comfort Grazing Muzzle

    ★★★★★
This is a very durable and well made grazing muzzle and halter. Designed to allow the horse comfortable, limited access to pasture grass. Both the crown and throatlatch have rubberized wide protection.

  • Centaur EcoPure Thick Rib Hook and Loop Bell Boots

    ★★★★★
These are the best bell boots! The Centaur transparent gum boots are very flexible and don't cause rubs. The Velcro holds them on well. My horse rarely loses one.
    Susan, VAVerified Buyer
  • Roma Ice Boot Wrap

    ★★★★★
This is just sitting in the freezer at the barn just waiting for one of the horses to have a boo boo. I hope I never have to use it for that but cooling down legs after a vigorous exercise also make these boots useful.
    J., TNVerified Buyer
  • Shires ARMA Neoprene Brushing Boots

    ★★★★★
This is a great everyday brushing boot. I'm happy I could get it in white!

  • Equinavia Odin Flexi Overreach Boots

    ★★★★★
Perfect boot for my young horse that managed to pull off his shoes. Great protection

What is the difference between brushing boots and tendon boots?

Brushing boots protect the inside of the leg from knocks by the opposite hoof, for flatwork and turnout. Tendon and open-front boots add a hard shell at the back of the leg for strikes from the hind feet when jumping, and leave the front open so the horse feels a rail.

How do I choose the right size horse boot?

Most boots come in Pony, Cob, Horse and Oversize, or Small to Extra Large. Sizes vary by brand, so measure around the cannon bone and check the size chart on each product page.

Polo wraps or boots for schooling?

Both work. Polo wraps give soft support and look smart for flatwork but take practice to put on evenly. Boots go on faster and many offer more impact protection, which is why many riders choose boots for jumping.

When does my horse need bell boots?

Bell or overreach boots protect the heels and coronet band if the hind feet catch the front heels, and they help keep front shoes on. Many riders use them for turnout, jumping and on the trailer.

What should be in a barn first-aid kit?

Vet wrap, gauze, a wound spray or salve, bandage scissors, a thermometer and ice boots or a cold pack. Keep your vet’s number with the kit, and call the vet for any deep wound or lameness.
