Snaffle Bits

Herm Sprenger snaffle and gag bits: KK Ultra, Dynamic RS and Turnado

Our best-selling Herm Sprenger bits are double-jointed loose ring snaffles. The KK Ultra line has a shortened center link angled at 45 degrees, which Herm Sprenger designed for soft but precise aids, and the Dynamic RS mouthpiece is shaped to follow the curve of the mouth.

Want a quieter bit in the mouth? Eggbutt and D-ring cheeks hold the mouthpiece steadier than a loose ring. Many Herm Sprenger mouthpieces are made of Sensogan, an alloy the company developed itself and has toxicologically tested. Turnado mouthpieces turn the joint forward by 45 degrees so the tongue takes even pressure on both sides.

Weymouths, Bradoons & Pelhams

Herm Sprenger Weymouths, bradoons and Pelhams for the double bridle

Herm Sprenger makes Weymouths in short and long cheeks, with mouthpieces that match its bradoons, so the two bits work as a pair. Bradoons come in KK Ultra, WH Ultra and Dynamic RS mouthpieces, in loose ring and eggbutt.

Riding in one bit with two reins? Pelhams and Kimberwicks give curb action with a single mouthpiece, and a pair of leather converters lets you ride a Pelham with one rein.

Stirrups

Herm Sprenger stirrups: System 4, Bow Balance and Fillis

System 4 stirrups have joints in the sides that move in four directions, and Herm Sprenger says they soften the impact on your ankle and knee joints. Bow Balance adds a wide, bowed footbed, and the System 4 Offset sets the eye at an angle so the iron hangs ready for your foot.

Fillis irons are the best-selling Herm Sprenger stirrup at Tack of the Day. Replacement pads keep any pair gripping.

Spurs & Spur Straps

Herm Sprenger spurs: Ultra Fit and FairRider

Ultra Fit spurs use the Balkenhol fastening, a strap loop with a flared center bar that lets the strap pass the boot on the inside, and the Extra Grip versions add a rubber cover that controls slip. Choose a rounded, ball, rowel or comfort roller end.

FairRider spurs are anodized aluminum with a plastic neck, which keeps them light, and the flat-neck styles suit a horse new to spurs. Finish with biothane, leather or perlon spur straps.

  • Herm Sprenger Bow Balance Stirrups

The Herm Sprenger Bow Balance stirrups were game changers for me. So much better for my feet and knees. Expensive but worth every penny.

  • Herm Sprenger System 4 Stirrups

I've got 2 pairs of Sprenger, the original ones on my dressage saddle and the bow balance ones on my gp. I used to really suffer with my knees with normal stirrups, these have been worth every penny!

  • Herm Sprenger System 4 Stirrups

I love my Sprengers. I don't think I've lost a stirrup since I bought them, and they also stop my knees from hurting during/after a ride.

  • Herm Sprenger Turnado Sensogan Loose Ring Snaffle Bit 16mm

    ★★★★★

Beautiful bit. My horse adjusted to it immediately having always been ridden in a regular loose ring snaffle. He’s stretching more reliably into it, although I can’t be sure if it’s the bit or the new Flexible Fit reins as they as super spongy. Regardless, he’s very happy so that makes me very happy. I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase this bit again.

How do I measure my horse for a bit?

Measure the mouthpiece of a bit that fits well now, inside edge to inside edge of the rings, and match the width. Thickness matters too: many horses with a low palate or thick tongue are more comfortable in a thinner mouthpiece.

What is the difference between KK Ultra and Dynamic RS?

Both are double-jointed. KK Ultra has a shortened center link angled at 45 degrees; Dynamic RS has a mouthpiece shaped to follow the curve of the horse's mouth.

What is Sensogan?

An alloy Herm Sprenger developed itself and has toxicologically tested. It is used on many of its snaffles, Pelhams and bradoons.

Do System 4 stirrups fit any saddle?

They hang from your stirrup leathers like any iron. Choose the tread width to suit your boots, and replacement pads fit the System 4 irons.

Where are Herm Sprenger bits made?

In Iserlohn, Germany. Hermann Sprenger founded the company there in 1872, and it has worked from the same Iserlohn address since 1887.

About the Brand

Herm Sprenger: a family bitmaker in Iserlohn since 1872

Herm Sprenger began in Iserlohn, Germany, in 1872, when Hermann Sprenger bought forged spur blanks and finished them for sale. Spurs came first; bits, stirrups and fittings followed, and the company is now run by the fourth generation of the Sprenger family. The range runs from everyday snaffles to the Weymouths and bradoons dressage riders use in the double bridle.

Its best-known lines are the KK Ultra and Dynamic RS bits, System 4 and Bow Balance stirrups, and Ultra Fit spurs.

Our customers lean on Herm Sprenger most for double-jointed snaffles and flexible stirrups, the pieces riders fine-tune for years.
