    The Shirt Edit

Six things to know before you choose your next show shirt

A rider in a white Alessandro Albanese long sleeve show shirt and white breeches in the saddle

    Collar, sleeve, fabric

How to choose a women's show shirt: sleeve, collar, fabric

Sleeve length follows the weather and your class. Short sleeves suit summer shows: the Chestnut Bay SkyCool Liberty Sport Short Sleeve Show Shirt is 92% polyester and 8% spandex with a low profile YKK zipper placket, and the Alessandro Albanese Houston Short Sleeve Competition Shirt is a technical stretch fabric with a snap placket and wrap tab collar. Long sleeves add sun cover and a formal line when a coat comes off; Chestnut Bay lists 50+ UV protection in the body fabric of its SkyCool Liberty Long Sleeve Show Shirt.

Fabric is where these shirts differ most. Tredstep builds its Monaco shirts in exclusive Air Silk (77% nylon, 23% spandex), which it describes as naturally cooling, antibacterial and wicking, with mesh sleeves. The Equinavia Sara Perforated Long Sleeved Show Shirt has a fully perforated back and sleeves for airflow. Look elsewhere if you want a traditional cotton shirt: the range here leans on technical stretch fabrics, apart from Chestnut Bay's Western styles in a cotton blend.

Awesome fit and feel! Very comfortable shirt, great wearability too!

TuffRider Kirby Kwik Dry Long Sleeve Show Shirt

Great shirt, fits fairly true to size considering most equestrian clothes fit really small. My only complaint is the sleeves are a little large for me. Other than that, I'm glad with my purchase!

    Romfh Long Sleeve Competitor Shirt

I got this shirt about a year ago and have been wearing it a lot during the summer in California. I'd say true to size fit but I tend to go one size up to have a more relaxed fit. The length of the shirt itself is good enough to tuck into low waist breeches and the sleeves are a good length too. For reference I'm 5'9 and 140 and I went for the Large. I really like the color pops on the seams and collar as well as the structure the ROMFH shirt has vs the Kerrits Ventilator. (Which I like as well but only as short sleeve)

    What Our Customers Buy Most

Show shirts riders reach for first, in stock in most sizes

      Stock ties & collars

Stock ties, chokers and collars: what shows require

A shirt built for a stock tie saves fuss on show morning. The Equinavia Ingrid Long Sleeve Show Shirt has a stock tie loop, the LeMieux Sophia Short Sleeve Show Shirt has stock tie loops and a stand-up collar, and the Tredstep Monaco Pro Long Sleeve Show Shirt has a traditional wrap collar.

Schooling shows and some eventing days are more relaxed, so a zip or snap collar worn with a choker works for many events. Check the prize list for your class before you pack, then choose the collar that matches it.

        Long sleeve competition shirt

A wonderful competition shirt to wear for many occasions. Light weight, soft, breathable, wicking and fast drying make this the ultimate show shirt. The long sleeves with the breathable material make this shirt easy to wear at any temperature. Cute, yet subtle logos make it appropriate to wear if coats are waived due to the heat at the shows, the long sleeves will help protect your arms from the sun. The cut is very flattering and tucks nicely into your breeches leaving a nice clean line, no bulkiness anywhere. This shirt is also nice to wear for other formal riding occasions such as clinics or symposiums.

        Technical show shirt

This technical shirt is great addition to any collection. I wear it under my show coat with a stock tie. It also looks great alone. It fits perfect no need to adjust a size. I have even wore it in a chilly morning 10k race! It kept me warm and dry.

        Romfh Long Sleeve Competitor Shirt

This has become my daughter's favorite show shirt. It's soft, cool, long enough to stay tucked in and has a soft magnetic collar. I wash these on cold, delicate, and hang to dry, so far no problems. I've just come back to buy another. :)

        Size & fit

Women's show shirt sizing: how to choose your size

Brands cut their shirts differently, so use the size chart on each product page and the Find Your Fit sizes at the top of this page, which cover the full women's size run in letter, numeric and EU sizing. The Equinavia Ingrid has a contoured body fit and the Aubrion Arcaster has a slim contour shape, so many of these shirts are cut to sit close.

Riders tell us these shirts fit true to size, and one rider who is 5'9" and 140 pounds chose a Large for a more relaxed fit. If you sit between sizes, choose by the fit you want through the shoulders and bust.

        Care

Washing and caring for a women's show shirt

        1. Close zippers and snaps, then turn the shirt inside out.
        2. Machine wash cold with like colors; Tredstep asks for a cool wash.
        3. Skip bleach and fabric softener.
        4. Lay flat to dry, or tumble dry low where the brand allows it (Tredstep says do not tumble dry), and use a low iron if needed. Check your shirt's product page for its exact care.

        Who they're for

Who women's competition shirts are for

Hunter and jumper riders showing in a coat want a clean collar and a stock tie loop, as on the Equinavia Ingrid Long Sleeve Show Shirt.

Dressage riders look for a wrap collar and a cooling fabric, so the Tredstep Monaco Short Sleeve Show Shirt and its Air Silk fabric are a natural place to start.

Eventing riders who switch between phases choose a quarter zip with mesh underarms, such as the Dapplebay 1/4 Zip Long Sleeve Show Top.

Western riders choose a technical shirt with no-show snaps and stretch, such as the Chestnut Bay Annie-O Western Show Shirt.

First-show riders need one clean white shirt that works under a coat, like the LeMieux Sophia Short Sleeve Show Shirt.

          Our Take

Match the collar to your class, then the fabric to the weather

For formal hunter and dressage classes, choose from a tried and trusted brand like RJ Classics, LeMieux and Tredstep, and you'll never have to worry about getting it right. For schooling shows and hot days, a snap or zip collar in a cooling technical fabric keeps you comfortable from warm-up to the last class.

Then size it with Find Your Fit and shop the full range of women's competition shirts in the grid above.

          Questions riders ask

          Women's competition shirts FAQ

What should a woman wear under a show coat?

A fitted, lightweight show shirt with a collar that suits your class: a stock tie loop or wrap collar for formal hunter and dressage classes, or a zip or snap collar for schooling shows. Choose a breathable stretch fabric so you stay cool when the coat stays on. Check your prize list, then use Find Your Fit to choose your size.

Do I need a stock tie, a choker or a pin?

USEF hunter rules say shirts must have a choker, similar collar or tie, and formal classes pair a white shirt with a white stock. USEA also lists a stock, choker or tie for eventing. A shirt with stock tie loops or a collar built for a choker covers each case; check the prize list for the class you enter.

What is the coolest show shirt for a hot show day?

Look for a lightweight technical fabric with mesh, perforation or a cooling finish, such as Chestnut Bay SkyCool, Tredstep Air Silk or Equine Couture EquiCool shirts. Riders tell us a breathable fabric keeps them comfortable through hot show days. If jackets are waived, a long sleeve adds sun cover. Compare the shelves above and pick the sleeve your class allows.

How do I choose a women's show shirt size?

Size by chest and shoulders first, then check sleeve length. Brands cut differently, so use the size chart on each product page and the Find Your Fit sizes at the top of this page. Riders tell us these shirts fit true to size, and one who wanted a relaxed fit sized up. Pick your size, then compare shirts.
