Short answer
Match the cut to his build. High withers need a high or combo neck, wide chests need deep shoulder gussets, drafts need an XL cut, and ponies need a shorter body. Then size by measuring, not by the label.
Blanket fit chart: the right cut for each body type
Find the row that sounds like your horse. Each row is built from what riders report on that build, not from a brand's own claims, and every pick on it is a line we carry. Fit still varies horse to horse, so treat a row as where to start, not a guarantee.
| Body type | What goes wrong | Cut to look for | Lines riders name |
|---|---|---|---|
| High withersTB, OTTB, sway back | A standard cut pulls tight and rubs the withers and mane | High or combo neck, contoured over the withers | Rambo Original, Rhino Plus, Weatherbeeta Comfitec High Neck |
| Narrow frontFine TB, seniors | Gapes at the shoulder, slides sideways, lets rain in | Narrower cut with adjustable front closures | Rhino, Rambo Wug, Horze |
| Wide chest, low withersQH, Paint, stock type | Fits in length but is tight across the chest, then slips back | Large shoulder gussets, adjustable chest | Rambo Optimo, Amigo XL |
| Big shoulderWarmblood | Shoulder rubs, twisting, belly showing below the drop | Deep gussets and a deeper drop | Rhino Wug, Rambo Original or Optimo, Amigo |
| Draft or draft crossBelgian, Percheron, Friesian cross | Fits the front or the back, never both; short down the sides | XL cut: 20% deeper neck, 10% deeper body | Amigo XL, Rambo Original |
| Pony or cobShort back, wide barrel | Too long, with a drop that hangs past the knee | Pony cut: 10% shorter body | Amigo pony, Rhino pony |
XL and pony cut figures are from Horseware's own size guide. Lines named are ones riders report on that build and that we carry today.
Read his shape before you read a size chart
The tape gives you a size, but it does not tell you the cut. Ask four questions first. Are his withers high, or does he have almost none? Is he wide or narrow through the chest and shoulder? Is he a horse, draft, pony or cob? Does his neck tie in high or low? The answers point to a cut, and the cut matters as much as the number.
Neck set catches riders out most. A wrap-under-girth (Wug) cut fits a narrow, thin-necked horse well, but on a horse with a crest or a high neck set it can ride up and squeeze the shoulder. Brands also name their cuts in their own words, such as standard, high neck, combo, XL or pony, so a size that fits in one line will not always fit in the next.
High withers and sway backs: lift the neck off the withers
A high-withered horse needs a high-neck or combo-neck cut that is shaped over the withers. A standard straight cut that sits snug enough not to slip will pull tight across the withers and mane, and one cut loose enough to clear them will slide on a narrow frame. Riders with Thoroughbreds name the Rambo Original and Rhino Plus for this build most often.
A high neck is not a guarantee. The same horse can fit one cut from a brand and rub in another, so read how riders describe the opening at the withers, and check his withers after the first few days of turnout.
Horze Avalanche Winter Blanket
★★★★★
I have a sway back broodmare that always has issues with regular turnouts. This high neck fits her beautifully; no more rubbing the high withers! The quality, fit and style are all great.
Turnout blanket

I got this blanket for my 4y/o TB mare. It fits her perfectly and so far has kept her dry and the wind off her. I love the design of the high-neck, so much better than other brand's design in that area. SUPER adjustable front closures w/velcro and buckles.
Narrow and fine-boned horses: stop the gape and the slide
A narrow horse in a generous cut gets a blanket that gapes at the shoulder and slides to one side, which lets rain in and rubs where it shifts. Look for a narrower cut with front closures you can take in. Among the Horseware lines, riders describe Rhino as narrower through the chest and shorter in the drop than Rambo, and the Rambo Wug suits narrow, thin-necked horses.
Narrow horses split riders more than any other build. One rider's perfect narrow fit gapes on the next horse, so expect to try a cut on before you take the tags off. Seniors that have lost topline often move into this group.
Horze Glasgow Stable Blanket
★★★★★
This blanket fits my horse perfectly. He is narrow to average in the chest. Rambos always sink too low and constrict him but this one stays up. It's very puffy but light. love it.
Horze Avalanche Combo Turnout Blanket
★★★★★
This stable blanket fits my horse so well. When trying on blankets the neck cut was always an issue. The blanket would slip back to the wither area and rub the horses shoulders, not with this style.
Horze Nevada Turnout Blanket

When it came time to buy better fitting blankets for my narrow Thoroughbred, I was at a loss. … So I got the medium. Then I saw the matching hood. So now I also have the matching hood.
Horze blankets
My big beautiful Paint gelding is 27 now and was pasture boarded until a year ago. I finally found blankets that fit properly. He is narrow in front and wore out the ones we had for years. Everything else I tried was cut too large in the neck and shoulders so it was hard to keep him dry.

Wide chests and low withers: room through the shoulder
Stock horses such as Quarter Horses and Paints have the opposite problem to a Thoroughbred. With a wide chest and little wither to hold the blanket, a narrow cut is tight across the chest, and the blanket slips back. Large shoulder gussets are what riders say makes the difference, along with a chest closure you can let out.
For the widest horses, riders name the Rambo Optimo, which has a high gusset for big-chested horses, and the Amigo XL. A cut that fits a Thoroughbred's shoulder is usually the wrong place to start.
Turnout blankets with gussets
I have a couple of wide chested QH's and have difficulty fitting blankets. I have found that virtually any make that has large gussets fits just fine. If the gussets are small ones or there are no gussets then the blanket fits in length but is way too tight around the chest.
Centaur turnout blanket
Really happy with this blanket for my Quarter Horse/Rope Horse. The higher neck design provides excellent coverage without rubbing against his mane, which has been an issue with other blankets. It fits him well through the shoulders and back. … Overall, great quality and a thoughtful fit for stockier builds.
Turnout sheet
★★★★★
This sheet is perfect for my 17H guy who is rather broad in the chest. The gussets at his shoulders give him great freedom of movement and the drop at the sides acutally covers his sides. I am very happy with the quality and fit.
Equi-Essentials stable sheet
★★★★★
I will only buy sheets/blankets with shoulder gussets and it amazes me how few stable sheets have them. This one does! and at a great price too. I ordered a second one.

Big-shouldered warmbloods: depth through the shoulder and drop
A warmblood with a big shoulder needs depth more than width: deep gussets so the shoulder can move without rubbing, and a drop long enough to cover the belly. Riders name the Rhino Wug and the Rambo Original and Optimo for this build, and one owner says an Amigo was the first blanket that stopped twisting on a warmblood.
Depth is where this build gets caught out. A few riders find even a generous cut too shallow on a big warmblood, with the belly showing below the line, so check the drop as well as the chest when it arrives.
Amigo turnout blanket
★★★★★
This blanket style is the only blanket I have found that fits my warmblood and doesn't twist. I only buy Horseware blankets now.
Turnout blanket
★★★★★
The gusset is fantastic- my guy has average warmblood build with a big shoulder and high withers. The gusset fit really well and I'm not concerned about shoulder rubs. … I also think it runs very roomy, my horse is usually an 80 or 81 and I ordered the 81 and it is a little big.
Draft and draft-cross horses: XL cuts and the biggest sizes
A draft needs width through the chest and shoulder and enough drop to cover his sides, not only a bigger number. Riders say the hard part is fitting the front and the back at once. Horseware's XL cut is 20% deeper in the neck and 10% deeper in the body, and riders name the Amigo XL and Rambo Original for big draft crosses.
Size ceilings matter here. Our Amigo and Rambo lines go up to 90 inches, and our Weatherbeeta, Shires and Rhino lines up to 87. A horse between sizes may find the bigger one gapes at the chest while the smaller one is tight at the shoulder, so measure carefully.
Amigo, Rambo and Weatherbeeta sizing
17.1hh perch cross, currently wears an 87 in Amigo/Rambo/weatherbeeta. The 87s are a bit too loose in the chest and gape open, but provide enough drop and room for his big shoulder. 84s are a better fit, but are tight on his shoulder and look like a miniskirt.

Bought blankets for our Shire mare and one of our Friesians. After trying many other brands, I am so relieved to have found blankets that fit our girls without rubbing their manes or shoulders! Thank you for making high quality, affordable blankets that fit high necked, wide shouldered horses!

Ponies, cobs and short backs: a shorter body and drop
A horse blanket scaled down is not a pony blanket. Horseware cuts its pony sizes with a body 10% shorter so the blanket does not restrict movement, and a pony cut keeps the drop from hanging past the knee. Short-backed cobs and wide-barreled ponies often need a size chosen by chest width, not height.
Leg straps are the other pony complaint: on a small pony they are often too long. Some Amigo pony styles skip leg straps for a tail strap, which riders of small ponies like. Check the tail flap length too, because a long one can trap manure on a pony.
Horze Avalanche Turnout Sheet
★★★★★
My pony is 13.2 and a little longer than most ponies her size. This blanket fits her very well and does not shift around much at all due to the darts and adjustable straps in front. It also keeps her dry. … The only negative is that the tail flap is a little long for a pony and traps manure.
Amigo Hero turnout
I bought this for my pony last winter after his other blanket gave him whither rubs. He had a wide barrel, but has short legs so many blankets are too long for him. This one fits great.

Blanket size crosswalk: US inches, UK feet and EU labels
US blankets are sized in inches, UK rugs in feet and inches, and some European brands print a different EU number on the label. The size is the length from the center of the chest to the tail. Measure first, then translate.
- Stand him square on level ground and use a soft tape.
- Measure from the center of his chest, across the point of the shoulder, to the center of his tail.
- For Horseware (Rambo, Rhino, Amigo), take 4 inches off that number before you read the chart, as Horseware's own guide says. Most other brands read the measurement as is and round up between sizes.
| US size (inches) | UK size (feet) | Centimeters | EU label on Horze |
|---|---|---|---|
| 63" | 5'3" | 160 cm | EU 115 |
| 66" | 5'6" | 168 cm | EU 125 |
| 69" | 5'9" | 175 cm | EU 130 |
| 72" | 6'0" | 183 cm | EU 135 |
| 75" | 6'3" | 191 cm | EU 140 |
| 78" | 6'6" | 198 cm | EU 145 |
| 81" | 6'9" | 206 cm | EU 155 |
| 84" | 7'0" | 213 cm | EU 165 |
| 87" | 7'3" | 221 cm | Not offered |
| 90" | 7'6" | 229 cm | Not offered |
The EU label is not a centimeter length, so shop Horze by the US number on its label. Largest sizes in our current lines: Amigo and Rambo 90"; Weatherbeeta, Shires, Rhino and Centaur 87"; Horze and Equinavia 84".
Brands do not run the same
Riders say Rambos run about a size large: one horse wears an 81 in the Rambo Original but a 78 in the Optimo. A blanket that fits one line can be long in the next, so when you change lines, check the drop and the tail before you take the tags off. Height is a poor guide: a long-backed horse can need a bigger blanket than his hands suggest.
Rambo stable blanket

Really nice stable blanket but runs very long (nose to tail). Horseware 75" usually fit my 16hh TB mare perfectly and I'm going to need to shorten this one a good bit.

I bought this blanket about two month go for my very long warmblood and it fits him great. He's 15.3 but wears an 81 so its hard to find blankets that don't look like a dress on him!
