Buying tip:Pick the boot for the job, then the size and sole shape. Cavallo sells Regular and Slim soles, and sizing takes care: measure your horse's hoof, compare it with the size chart on the product page, and check whether the boot is sold as a single or in a pair before you order.

What riders say about Cavallo

Two riders on the Cavallo Trek boot, in their own words.

Cavallo Trek Boot

I bought these boots since, like many I'm sure, our OTTB goes through shoes like they are going out of style! He's a forger and a mover and when he pulls a shoe, my daughter needs to be able to continue riding. Or if he abscesses, we needed something to go over his wrap when we could turn him out or even to keep the dressing clean in the stall. I called a rep at Cavallo and we went over all our options and came up with the Trek boots being out best one. She was right. Our TB keeps these boots on in and outside, the dressings stay on, and he doesn't mind being ridden in them. I would definitely recommend the Trek boots because of the drainage system in them too.

Cavallo Trek Boot

I use these boots on my horse when we go out trail riding. She's barefoot so when we are in a rocky area she gets a bit tender footed. With these boots I can go anywhere and she doesn't take any gimpy steps. I can walk, trot and canter with no problem. They don't rub even after hours of trails.

Cavallo Trek, Sport, Simple and ELB hoof boots compared

Cavallo hoof boots differ by upper, closure and how they are sold. Trek is the most flexible and breathable of the collection, Simple has a leather upper, Sport is the lightweight option, and the ELB is Cavallo's Entry Level Boot. Cavallo describes the Simple as a boot for all-terrain protection of the barefoot horse, and Cavallo pitches the Trek, Simple and Sport as a spare when a horse throws a shoe.

Riders tell us the Trek stays on at every gait, including a canter, and doesn't rub after hours on the trail. One rider uses Trek boots to hold a dressing on over an abscess and says the drainage system is why she recommends them.

Cavallo boots for draft horses, miniatures and transport

The BFB Boot is made for draft horses: Cavallo says it has all the features of its regular boots, sized and formed for the biggest horses, in 1680D nylon with a patented front-opening system. It is sold as a single boot.

The CLB Boot is made for miniature horses, in the same 1680D nylon with a soft foam collar and a replaceable Velcro closure, sold in pairs. For the trailer, the Transport Air Boot has a nylon and nubuck upper and drainage slots, and Cavallo says it works on shod or barefoot horses; it comes in pairs and is currently low on sizes.

How to size a Cavallo hoof boot

Cavallo hoof boots come in numbered sizes, most in a Regular and a Slim sole. Slim suits a narrower hoof, Regular a rounder one. Miniature sizes run M1 to M4 for the CLB.

Riders tell us sizing can be tricky: one found it hard to get right at first and was thrilled once she did, and the Slim sole fit her mule without rubbing. Measure, check the size chart on the product page, and use the size links in Find Your Fit above.

The Cavallo English Wedge Pad

Cavallo also makes the English Wedge Pad, favored by jumpers. It is reversible and lightweight with a ventilated spine, 100% Merino wool on one side, high-density foam on the other and memory foam between. It measures 23 inches long by 22 inches wide, tapering to 15 inches, and Cavallo says to hose it off and line dry rather than machine wash.

Who Cavallo hoof boots are for

Cavallo suits riders who want a boot they can put on in minutes and take anywhere the horse goes.

  • Barefoot horses on rocky trails: the Trek, Simple or Sport.
  • Horses that throw a shoe on a ride: the Trek, Simple or Sport as a spare.
  • Horses recovering from an abscess or hoof sensitivity: Cavallo lists these uses on the Trek, Simple and Sport, and riders tell us the Trek holds a dressing on.
  • Draft horse owners: the BFB. Miniature owners: the CLB.
  • Look elsewhere for a boot to protect the lower leg: Cavallo boots cover the hoof, not the cannon or fetlock.
