Riding in the rain is only miserable when your gear lets you down. Equestrian rain gear is cut differently from ordinary rain jackets, and it's worth knowing what to look for.
What makes a good riding rain jacket
Look for a fully waterproof shell with sealed seams, not just a water-resistant finish. Riding-specific jackets add a two-way zipper or rear vent so the jacket sits over the saddle instead of bunching, a longer back to keep water off the seat, and a hood that turns with your head. For long hacks and trail rides, a long riding coat covers more of the saddle and your thighs.
Layering for wet weather
In cool rain, pair a waterproof shell with a fleece or light padded layer you can remove as you warm up. Waterproof boots and gloves with good grip on wet reins finish the job.
