Men's Breeches

The best pair depends on your discipline, the season and your fit. Knee patch breeches have grip patches on the inside of the knee only; full seat breeches carry the grip through the seat and inner leg. Men's knee patches come in silicone, suede and synthetic suede: RJ Classics gives its Men's Mason Breech silicone knee patches, Tredstep gives its Men's Verde Breeches tonal suede knee patches, and TuffRider gives its Men's Claudio Knee Patch Breeches a synthetic sueded knee patch. Shires Aubrion's Optima MX-LG sits in between, with silicone leg grips longer than a knee patch but not as long as a full seat.

Hunters wear knee patch, on the flat too. Many dressage riders ride in full seat, and jumpers usually do; LeMieux says the silicone full seat on its Men's Full Seat Sports Breeches is ideal for dressage, or some extra stick in the jumper arena. For schooling, lessons and trail rides, it's your choice or your trainer's.

Fit varies by cut, so read each brand's description and size chart. Equinavia describes its Men's Erik breeches as a more relaxed fit, LeMieux cuts its Men's Sports Breeches slim and its Men's Classique Breeches generously with front pleats, and Shires Aubrion says its Optima MX breeches are anatomically cut. At the waist, Horze gives its Men's Grand Prix breeches a contoured waistband for an improved fit, and Tredstep gives its Men's Verde Breeches a two inch waist width to accommodate a belt.

Yes. Men's breeches here run in waist sizes from 26 to 46, with Long sizes from 28 Long to 46 Long. The Ovation Men's 4-Pocket Classic Breech, TuffRider Men's Long Ribb Knee Patch Breeches, Romfh Men's Argento Knee Patch Euroseat and Tredstep Men's Verde Breeches come in Long sizes, and TuffRider says its Long Ribb has a longer length. Most men's breeches here are sized by waist in inches, in Regular and Long lengths. Horze and B Vertigo, and Alessandro Albanese on its Men's Sidney breeches, use European sizes shown with the US equivalent, from EU 44/US 28 to EU 56/US 40, and Horze lists a 29.5 inch inseam on its Men's Grand Prix Full Seat Breeches. Unisex winter and rain pants come in letter sizes from XX Small to XX Large, and Horseware says gentlemen should size up in its Padded Liner Trousers. It depends on the class. In USEF hunter and equitation classes, "Breeches may be buff, canary, tan, rust or white" (HU107.2, EQ106.2, 2026), and hunter formal attire calls for white, buff or canary breeches (HU107.3). In jumper classes, Formal Jumper Attire calls for white or fawn breeches, Proper Jumper Attire for light breeches (white, fawn or canary), and Standard Jumper Attire permits breeches of any color (JP111.11, 2026). The 2026 USEF dressage attire booklet permits white, light or dark colored breeches or jodhpurs, but not bright colors or patterns (1.4).

For lessons and schooling, yes, if you and your trainer choose to: what you ride in there is your choice or your trainer's. For USEF hunter and equitation classes, the 2026 rules say conventional attire following the tradition of fox hunting is encouraged and preferred, and "Breeches may be buff, canary, tan, rust or white" (HU107.2, EQ106.2). In dressage, yes: the 2026 USEF dressage attire booklet permits breeches or jodhpurs (1.4), and at Fourth Level and below allows paddock or jodhpur boots with half chaps or garters that match the boots (1.6). The men's styles here are breeches and riding pants, which you can wear with tall boots, or with paddock boots and matching half chaps.
