Most are synthetic leather; TuffRider makes the Kids' Bryce Star Embroidered Printed Square Toe Western Boots in leather, with a 1" heel and a 7.5" shaft. Toddler styles such as the Pinnacles, Olympic and Dunes have a side zip that TuffRider says makes them easy to get on and off, and the Fringe Booties are a bit shorter than a traditional cowboy boot. TuffRider marks toddler sizes with a “T” and says its youth sizes fall between larger children's and smaller adult sizing.

Choose the height, then the fit

For lessons, schooling and trail, the boot is your choice or your trainer's. For shows, USEF dressage rules allow paddock or jodhpur boots with matching half chaps or garters at Fourth Level and below (DR120.1.6), and jumper rules require boots and permit half chaps that match the paddock boots (JP111.11).

Then fit the boot: check the brand's size system, look for a growth insole if your child is between sizes, and check the stirrup gap before the first ride. Shop the full range of kids' riding boots in the grid above.

            Questions parents ask

            Kids' riding boots FAQ

Should you size up riding boots?

Look for a boot with room to grow built in: Mountain Horse says removing the extra insole from its Kids' Veganza Youth Field Boots and Veganza Zip Paddock makes the boot two half sizes larger, and TuffRider says its Kids' Belmont Junior Field Boots come with two insoles to accommodate growing feet. Whatever size you choose, check it in the stirrup: The British Horse Society advises “a ½ inch gap between the stirrup and the widest part of the foot” and says “the stirrup needs to fit the size of the boot you’re using.”

Which kids' riding boots have room to grow built in?

Mountain Horse designs its Kids' Veganza Youth Field Boots and Kids' Veganza Zip Paddock with a removable extra insole that, when removed, makes the boot two half sizes larger, and says the removable insole in its Kids' Veganza Winter Paddock allows for growth. TuffRider's Kids' Belmont Junior Field Boots come with two insoles, which TuffRider says accommodate growing feet.

How should I size riding boots for a child?

Start with the size system the brand uses. Horze sizes its Kids' Rover Tall Field Boots, Polar Thermo Boots, Chester Rubber Tall Dress Boots, Signature Jodhpur Boots and Kilkenny Jodhpur Boots in European sizes and says to consult the size chart. LeMieux says size selection for its Kids' Junior Field Riding Boots is in US sizes. Ovation pairs ladies' foot sizes with youth-sized shafts in its Kids' Flex Sport Field Boot, and Mountain Horse sizes its Kids' Veganza Winter Tall Boot for tweens and young teens. TuffRider marks its toddler Western sizes with a “T” and says its youth sizes fall between larger children's and smaller adult sizing. Find Your Fit above lists every kids' size we carry, from toddler to EU sizes.

Paddock boots or tall boots for a young rider?

For lessons, schooling and trail, it's your choice or your trainer's. For shows, USEF dressage rules allow paddock or jodhpur boots with half chaps or garters that match the boot color at Fourth Level and below, and require tall boots above Fourth Level (DR120.1.6). Jumper rules require boots and permit half chaps that match the paddock boots (JP111.11). Our Kids' Paddock Boots page has every short riding boot we carry for young riders.

Do kids need tall boots to show?

It depends on the division. USEF dressage rules allow paddock or jodhpur boots with matching half chaps or garters at Fourth Level and below and require tall boots above Fourth Level (DR120.1.6). Jumper rules say boots are required and half chaps are permitted as long as the color matches the paddock boots (JP111.11). The hunter attire rule (HU107) and the equitation rules EQ105 and EQ106 do not mention rider boots; under the hunt colors rule, brown boot tops are prohibited in classes restricted to junior exhibitors unless a junior wears scarlet (HU108.2). These are the 2026 USEF rules; check the prize list for each show.

Field boots or dress boots for kids?

Field boots have laces at the front of the ankle; dress boots have a smooth front with no laces. USEF dressage rules allow either above Fourth Level (DR120.1.6). Most of the kids' tall boots we carry are field boots, from TuffRider, Horze, Shires Moretta, LeMieux, Ovation, Equinavia, Tredstep and Mountain Horse; TuffRider also makes the Kids' Baroque Dress Boots.

Do kids' tall boots come in different calf widths and heights?

Yes, in some styles. Our kids' tall boots come in Slim, Regular, Full and Wide calf widths and in Regular and Tall heights. LeMieux makes its Kids' Junior Field Riding Boots in Slim, Regular and Full calf widths and Regular and Tall heights, TuffRider makes its Kids' Starter Back Zip and Baroque Field Boots in Slim and Wide calf widths, and Shires Moretta makes the Kids' Gianna Field Boots in Regular and Tall heights. Choose Calf Width or Height in Find Your Fit to see every boot in that fit.

Are there budget-friendly tall boots for kids?

Yes. Equinavia says of its Kids' Kaia Synthetic Field Boots that there is “no reason to spend a fortune on boots that will only fit for a year,” Tredstep calls the Kids' Donatello Junior S a Junior version of its riding boots at an affordable cost, Dublin calls its Kids' Universal Tall Boots a great value, and Horze says its Kids' Chester Rubber Tall Dress Boots are priced right and perfect for everyday riding.

Zip or pull-on tall boots for kids?

Most of the kids' field and dress boots we carry close with a back zipper: TuffRider's Kids' Starter Back Zip, Baroque Field and Baroque Dress Boots have a back zipper with a snap closure, and LeMieux runs a YKK zip from the back of the heel to the top of the calf on its Kids' Junior Field Riding Boots. For pull-on styles, the TuffRider Kids' Lexington Waterproof Tall Country Boots pull on and close with a drawstring, and TuffRider makes the Kids' ProMold EquiRider Junior Tall Boots from injection-molded PVC rubber.

Can kids' tall boots get wet, and how do I care for them?

Check each boot's description. TuffRider calls its Kids' ProMold EquiRider Junior Tall Boots waterproof, its Kids' Lexington Waterproof Tall Country Boots water-resistant leather and lining, and its Kids' Starter Back Zip Field Boots water resistant. For care, LeMieux says to dry its junior boots naturally after every wear and always use boot trees to keep their shape, Equinavia says to store tall boots zipped with boot shapers and avoid polish around the zipper, and TuffRider says to wipe dirt and sweat off the Lexington with a damp cloth or sponge as soon as possible after every ride.

What makes a kids' winter riding boot warm?

The lining. Mountain Horse insulates its Kids' Veganza Winter Tall Boot with a plush vegan fleece, Horze lines its Kids' Polar Thermo Boots with faux fur, and TuffRider makes the Kids' Starter Winter Fleece Lined Front Zip Paddock Boots. TuffRider's Kids' Winter Trotter Waterproof Paddock Boot adds a waterproof insole and a double layer waterproof design.

            What are half chaps?

Half chaps cover the lower leg over a paddock or jodhpur boot. TuffRider says its Kids' Washable Half Chaps, with a close contour design and high-cut profile, feel and look like a tall boot. Most close with a zipper: Dublin gives its Kids' Easy-Care Half Chaps II a full-length YKK zipper with a snap closure, and Horze says its Kids' Soft Leather Half Chaps are easy for small hands to zip up.

Do I need half chaps with paddock boots?

For lessons, schooling and trail, it's your choice or your trainer's. In the show ring, USEF dressage rules allow paddock or jodhpur boots at Fourth Level and below only with half chaps or garters that match the boot color (DR120.1.6), and jumper rules permit half chaps as long as the color matches the paddock boots (JP111.11).
