    Amigo Bravo 12 Plus Turnout

My guys are pretty tough on turnouts but these have held up so far (3 years). They are a great price point and I add new weights to their wardrobe each year and have never had an issue. Love the ability to add or remove neck piece and also ability to layer as our weather can have crazy swings in no time flat.

    Horze Avalanche Turnout Blanket

LOVE this blanket. Added this weight to round out my full neck Avalance blanket and sheet set. These are the best products. I don't use any other brand anymore. These are superior in every way. Living on Long Island we get all weather all the time. Temperature variability is constant and it comes with all kinds of precipitation!

    Amigo Turnout Blankets

I love these blankets. I have one I've used for several years for another horse and wanted one for our new horse. These are the easiest blankets to put on and off and they stay put. I love that it's lightweight but I can layer for the cold days.

    Amigo Turnout Sheets

I love the Amigo rain sheet for our rainy weather here in the Pacific Northwest. Theses sheets fit well and last several years.

    The Fall Blanket Edit

Six ways to keep your horse comfortable this fall

From the first cool night to the first frost: the blanket for each kind of fall day, and how to tell it's the right one.

    Warm days, cold nights

Why fall deserves its own blanket

Many tack rooms are set up for two seasons: a medium or heavyweight blanket for winter, and nothing. So when the first cold night arrives, the heavyweight comes out. By morning the horse may have sweated underneath it, and a damp coat under a blanket pulls heat away faster than no blanket at all.

A lightweight turnout or stable blanket fills that gap. For many horses it ends up being the blanket they wear most, since the tail end of winter brings the same swings in spring.

Turnout sheet or lightweight: choosing the fill

Start with your horse rather than the thermometer. A clipped horse, an older horse or one that runs cold may want the lightweight; a horse with a full natural coat is often happy in a sheet. The blanket weight calculator walks through it by temperature and coat.

Popular picks run from the Amigo Ripstop 900 Original 0g sheet to 100g turnouts such as the Rhino Wug Turnout 100g.

Waterproof sheets for rain, wind and early frost

Weatherbeeta puts it simply: Weather. Beaten. Its waterproof sheets and lightweight turnouts are made for whatever fall brings, and its value line, Saxon, covers the same ground for less.

Shires Equestrian has designed blankets for wet British weather for decades. Its Tempest and Highlander lines include lightweight turnouts that take a horse through a US fall in style, many with a full neck cover for wind.

    Weatherbeeta Turnout Blankets

I have used these blankets for years. They stay waterproof and the hardware is good quality. I have bought different brands over the years and weatherbeta is the best.

    Rambo Turnout Blankets

I love my Rambos. I have some that are 10 years old, never needed a repair, and are still completely waterproof.

    Saxon Turnout Blankets

I personally like Saxon blankets out of all the other brands I have used in my 55 years of professional training, the quality of material and more importantly, the simplicity and quality of buckles and straps make it so easy in bad cold weather to hook and unhook with gloves on ha ha Thank you for your product

    Layering

Layer a sheet over a liner for fall's swings

Horseware builds this into its range: the Rhino Plus Medium VariLayer Turnout is one example, and many riders pair an Amigo or Rambo turnout sheet with a liner rather than buying a full set of weights.

Others simply add a sheet over a lightweight on the coldest nights. Either way, check under the blanket in the morning: a dry, warm coat means you got it right.

Stable blankets for chilly nights inside

A stalled horse can't move around to keep warm the way he does in the field, so a light stable blanket is often all he needs on a fall night. Save the turnout for outside, where rain and wind come into play.

    Weatherbeeta Coolers

I used this cooler last evening after a bath on my wooly Hanoverian GP horse and was utterly impressed by how quickly it dried him! I pulled it off after working my two other horses and he was almost completely dry. I was amazed at how wet the cooler was and yet his coat was dry. Luckily I purchased one for all of my horses!! I've owned ALOT of coolers and this is my new favorite!!

    Centaur Turbo-Dry Cooler

The Turbo Dry cooler is smooth and sort of shiny on the outside (and completely sawdust/hay repellant) and a lighter synthetic fleece-like material on the inside. I love the chest closure, which is a traditional metal blanket fastener as well as heavy duty Velcro that goes over it; it's really secure.

    Centaur Coolers

I LOVE this cooler! I have full coated horses (they live outside 24/7) I trailer out for lessons and if they get sweaty I put this on for the trailer ride home. They are dry and almost don't even look like they have been sweating with this cooler on. It does run snug, but I almost think that's how it works best.

    LeMieux Carbon Cooler Blanket

I bought my first Carbon Cooler for one of our warmbloods because he runs super hot and is sweaty after rides even in the winter. Instantaneously loved it so much I bought one for each of the others (and double downed with the thermo-cool for cooler days). I have never had a cooler wick and dry so rapidly. This is my new favorite blanket and a must have for all my horses.

                  Fall turnout blankets FAQ

What weight blanket does a horse need in fall?

For many fall days a turnout sheet or lightweight turnout is enough. Clipped, older or thin-coated horses may need more fill on cold nights, while a horse with a full coat may need less. Our blanket weight calculator walks through it by temperature.

What is the difference between a turnout sheet and a lightweight turnout?

A turnout sheet has no fill: it blocks rain and wind. A lightweight turnout adds a thin layer of fill, from 50 to 150 grams in our range, for cooler days and nights.

Can a horse wear a stable blanket outside?

No. Stable blankets aren't waterproof, so they're made for horses in the barn. For turnout, choose a waterproof turnout sheet or turnout blanket.

How do I know if my horse is too warm under his blanket?

Slide a hand under the blanket at the shoulder or behind the withers. If the coat feels damp or sweaty, the blanket is too heavy for the day; switch to a lighter one.
