    Irideon Women's Felicity Insulated Parka

Size was perfect which is important because I am tall (6’2’’). Sleeve length was not a problem. It is light weight so I wondered how warm it would be. We are experiencing single digit temperatures right now. This jacket is amazingly warm. I love it!

Water-resistant and water-repellent fabrics are a lighter step: LeMieux calls the Rose Hooded Puffer's water-resistant outer fabric "ideal for light showers." For long rides in the wet, Horze's Hazel Long Raincoat has leg straps inside that keep the hem in place when you ride.

Horze Women's Jadine Waterproof Shell Jacket

Love the jacket. Long enough to cover your rear, even in the saddle. Roomy, but not too large. I especially like all the pockets. It's very lightweight and can be rolled up to fit in a reasonably sized saddlebag or tied to your saddle. All in all simply a wonderful jacket for wind and rain.

      ★★★★★Rider review · 2019

Horze Women's Fiora Lightweight Waterproof Jacket

The perfect lightweight water proof jacket for trail riding. Packs up really small for my saddle bag. It’s long enough at the back waist to keep low on your back and over your belt. Really like it for a light mist/rain while riding.

This jacket is the perfect weight for riding! It keeps you warm and blocks the wind, but does not make you hot, even when riding vigorously. Love the back zipper and the two way front zipper so you can arrange the jacket around your hips in the saddle. Flattering and fabric is easy to wipe off!

            On barn days

            Horze Women's Isabella 3-in-1 Jacket

I really like the jacket. I wore it at temperatures from 40-52f so far and was fine with just the inside layer while moving around in barn. It neither makes you break out in sweat nor did I ever get too chilly in it at those temperatures. I love the lightweight of it and that the cuffs are nicely tight yet stretchy, so nothing is flapping around while grooming horse or handling dirty stuff. The material of the inner layer is so smooth and dense, that you can wipe off dirt easily with a damp paper towel. The outer layer I didn't need yet, but it's nice to have it in the car, so when you go shopping or elsewhere after barn you can change to a clean, pretty chic coat. Sizing - I'm 5.5ft, 132lb and bought a US 8 (EU 38) which is still roomy enough to wear a thick hoody underneath. If in doubt, rather downsize.

            Catago Women's Maritza Jacket

Thicker winter jacket. Great for keeping you warm around the barn and comfy enough to ride in. Good length that doesn't interfere when in the saddle. Ordered a second!

              Our Take

Dress for the weather you ride in

Cold days: look at the fill and the length, and at the riding features brands list, such as a two-way zip, a rear riding vent or inner leg straps. Wet days: check whether the brand says waterproof or water resistant; they are different claims. In-between days: Horseware describes its Tempo Softshell Jacket as perfect for days when you aren't quite sure what the weather is going to do.

              Questions riders ask

              Women's outerwear FAQ

Waterproof vs water-resistant: what's the difference?

Waterproof fabric is made to stop water passing through. Water-resistant and water-repellent fabrics shed light rain but are not made to keep out all water. Here is how the brands put it on our product pages: LeMieux rates the Athena Waterproof Lightweight Jacket's shell 10k waterproof, with taped seams; Shires Aubrion says the React Thermal Waterproof Coat is waterproof to 10,000mm; Horseware calls the Carrie Riding Jacket showerproof and breathable; Kerrits makes its Softshell Performance Jacket from wind and water resistant ThermaLux fabric; and LeMieux says the Rose Hooded Puffer's water-resistant outer fabric is ideal for light showers. Every women's outerwear style we carry with "Waterproof" in its name also says waterproof in its description.

Can I ride in a long coat?

Yes, when the coat is built for it. These long coats list riding features in their product descriptions: Horseware's Verve Long Padded Coat (generous back gusset, two-way zip, removable inner leg straps), LeMieux's Amelie Lightweight Riding Coat (inner leg straps, two-way front zip, back riding vent), Horze's Hazel Long Raincoat (side slits with press buttons, leg straps inside, two-way zipper), Kerrits' Warm Embrace Longline Puffer Coat (back pleat that zips open for in-saddle coverage, internal leg straps), Mountain Horse's Alicia Coat (two-way zipper, riding slit at the back) and Horze's Paloma Insulated Long Coat (two-way zipper, back riding vents). If a long coat's description doesn't list features like these, the brand hasn't said it is made for riding.

How should a riding jacket fit over layers?

Each brand gives its own fit guidance on our product pages. LeMieux says the Rose Hooded Puffer Jacket is designed to fit true to size and to size up for a more generous fit. Dapplebay says the Sport Fit Jacket is intentionally tailored for a closer feel and recommends a size up for a looser fit. Kerrits says the Skyline Houndstooth Puffer Jacket has a relaxed fit and a smooth nylon lining for easy layering. Horze lists European sizing on styles such as the Zoe Lightweight Padded Jacket and Classic Quilted Vest and asks you to check the size chart, and Horseware says its unisex Corrib Gilet runs so that ladies should size down.

              What is a softshell?

Softshell is a stretch woven outer fabric, often with a brushed or fleece inner face, made to move with you and block wind. How much rain it keeps out depends on the jacket, so read the brand's wording: Horseware says the Ona Softshell Jacket is fully waterproof with taped seams; Horseware calls the Tempo Softshell Jacket windproof and shower resistant; Kerrits' ThermaLux softshell is wind and water resistant with a lightly brushed interior; LeMieux's Celine Soft Shell Jacket has a water-resistant bonded outer shell; and Horze names its Camila a waterproof softshell jacket.

Which jackets have a two-way zip?

Product descriptions on our site say these women's styles have a two-way front zip: Horseware Carrie Riding Jacket, Horseware Tempo Softshell Jacket, Horseware Verve Long Padded Coat, LeMieux Amelie Lightweight Riding Coat, LeMieux Grace Long Rain Jacket, LeMieux Rose Hooded Puffer Jacket, Kerrits Down The Line Waterproof Jacket, Kerrits Warm Embrace Longline Puffer Coat, Horze Hazel Long Raincoat, Horze Paloma Insulated Long Coat, Mountain Horse Alicia Coat, Shires Aubrion Equestrian Winter Coat, Equinavia Cecilia Quilted Barn Jacket and Chestnut Bay Waterproof Riding Jacket. Vests with one include the Horze Classic Quilted Vest, Kerrits Core Motion Quilted Vest and Mountain Horse Star Vest.
