          Our Take

Start with the weather, then the saddle

Wet days: check whether the brand says waterproof or water resistant; they are different claims. Cold days: look at the fill and the length. Then look for the saddle details brands list, such as a two-way zip, a back riding vent or a hem cut for riding. In-between days: Alessandro Albanese calls its Men's Respira Jacket a go-to jacket between seasons.

          Questions riders ask

          Men's outerwear FAQ

Can I ride in my normal winter coat, or do I need a riding jacket?

That's your choice. What sets a riding jacket apart is the saddle details brands list in their product descriptions. Horseware gives its H20 Parka back riding vents and a riding-helmet-friendly hood; Alessandro Albanese designed the arched hem of its Men's Arno Waterproof Ripstop Jacket for comfort in the saddle; LeMieux says the two-way zip on its Men's Softshell Jacket prevents any catching on the saddle; and B Vertigo gives its Men's Garren Winter Parka a longer style for warmth while riding, with a zipper at the back. If a coat's description doesn't list details like these, the brand hasn't said it is made for riding.

Waterproof vs water-resistant: what's the difference?

Waterproof fabric is made to stop water passing through. Water-resistant and water-repellent fabrics shed light rain but are not made to keep out all water. Here is how the brands put it on our product pages: LeMieux rates its Men's Waterproof Lightweight Jacket 10k waterproof and says its Men's Waterproof Team Jacket is waterproof to 10,000mm, with taped seams; Horseware calls the Barra Technical Jacket waterproof and breathable, with taped seams; Kerrits makes its Men's Softshell Riding Jacket from wind and water-resistant fabric; Alessandro Albanese says the water-resistant outer of its Men's Quilo Monogram Puffer Coat handles a light drizzle or fog; and Horseware calls the Lexington Jacket's ripstop outer showerproof.

Is a softshell enough, or do I need an insulated jacket for real cold?

Brands describe the two for different weather. Kerrits calls its Men's Softshell Riding Jacket a classic for cooler weather, and Alessandro Albanese says its Men's Respira softshell is a go-to jacket between seasons or on warmer winter days. For the cold, Alessandro Albanese fills its Men's Quilo Monogram Puffer Coat with 3M Thinsulate Featherless insulation, and LeMieux insulates its Men's Waterproof Team Jacket with down fill. Equinavia's Men's Gunnar Hybrid Jacket combines both: quilted thermal panels on the body and stretchy softshell sleeves.

Will one jacket work for barn chores and riding?

Some brands design for both. Equinavia built its Men's Gunnar Hybrid Jacket for active days at the barn, with softshell sleeves that move with you in and out of the saddle; Kerrits says the smooth exterior of its Men's Softshell Riding Jacket sheds dirt and hay with ease; TuffRider calls its Heated Riding Vest perfect for barn chores, riding or outdoor activities in cold weather; and Horseware describes the unisex Corrib Jacket as a classic, hard-wearing jacket in waterproof fabric with a fleece lining.

What jacket should I bring for a trail ride or riding trip?

Look for styles that pack small and handle a change in the weather. Alessandro Albanese's Men's Packable Light Jacket packs away into its own lining, and Horseware says its Men's Light Padded No Logo Jacket is light and packs up small. For rain, Horseware's Transparent Waterproof Rain Jacket is fully waterproof with a fold-away hood, and its Eco Tech Club Jacket adds reflective safety detail.

Do I need a lighter riding jacket or gilet for milder weather?

That's your choice, and brands make lighter layers for it. Horseware says its unisex Lexington Jacket is perfect for milder weather, with a showerproof ripstop outer and a polyester mesh lining; Alessandro Albanese's Mogoro Light Blouson Jacket is lightweight and water repellent with a mesh lining; and Alessandro Albanese lines its Men's Classic Light Vest in cotton jersey and says it is suitable for all seasons.
