Horseware vs WeatherBeeta Blankets: Sizing and Fit Differences

Two brands, two measuring methods, two cuts. Measure once, then size each brand by its own rule.

Horseware says measure chest to tail and subtract 4 inches. WeatherBeeta says measure chest to the rear of the quarters and size up if between sizes. Same horse, two methods, so follow each brand’s rule.

Horseware says subtract 4 inches; WeatherBeeta does not

The biggest sizing difference is the tape, not the blanket. Horseware’s size guide has you measure from the center of the chest, across the point of the shoulder, to the center of the tail, then remove 10 cm (4 inches) before you read the table. WeatherBeeta’s guide has you measure the body length from the center of the chest to the rear of the quarters, where you expect the blanket to finish, and read the table directly.

That means one tape reading can point to two different size numbers. We have not measured size-for-size equivalence between the brands, so treat each brand’s own chart as the authority and do not carry a size number from one brand to the other. Both brands size in steps of about 3 inches.

Cut and shoulder fit: what the brands and riders say

Horseware describes its cuts by body length and depth: a Pony cut with a 10% shorter body, and an XL cut with a 20% deeper neck and a 10% deeper body. WeatherBeeta points riders to the Size Chart tab on each product, because cuts vary by range.

Shoulder room is where riders disagree most, and it depends on the range. One rider calls a 900D Horseware turnout “fairly fitted” and “slimmer through the shoulders,” and an Amigo owner with a stocky Quarter Horse finds it narrow there. WeatherBeeta owners describe a contoured back that stays put and a deep fit through the neck and chest. These are rider reports on specific styles, not brand specifications.

Which fits which horse: start with chest and shoulder

Narrow or athletic through the shoulder: Horseware riders report a true-to-size, fairly fitted cut, and Horseware’s Pony cut shortens the body. Deep chest, broad shoulder or stout build: WeatherBeeta riders report good coverage through the neck and chest and, when a horse bulked up, going to the next size. Very large horses: one Amigo owner says an Amigo fits a Belgian cross that makes most blankets look like mini skirts, and Horseware makes an XL cut.

Between sizes or on the line? WeatherBeeta says choose the bigger size. If you are unsure, check the product’s size chart before you order, and ask Tack of the Day customer care if the chart is missing.

Horseware turnout with neck piece

This blanket runs very true to size. Usually HW is generous on my guy but this blanket is fairly fitted. This one is definitely slimmer through the shoulders.

WeatherBeeta Ultra Cozi turnout

My mare is a warmblood with a deep neck and broad chest and am always having trouble to find rugs that fit her round the chest and neck. This rug really covers my mare comfortably and completely and is extremely cosy.

Amigo turnout, size 72

It’s the only truly waterproof blanket I trust. I wish it came in a 70 though. And it’s too narrow through the shoulders of my stocky QH so when I only use it in the rain or snow. Wish Amigo had more stock horse cut options.

WeatherBeeta turnout, size 75

I had to replace my 72 Weatherbeeta blanket since my 6 year old has gotten really stout and it was too short. I ordered an 75 which was the next size up. This blanket is exactly what I was expecting! A quality blanket that fits my horse perfectly.

Amigo 1200D turnout

WeatherBeeta contour-back turnout

Extremely well made blanket. The contour back allows blanket sit very nicely on horses back and doesn’t slide side to side. Left on for 5 days before looking to see if any rubbing and hair loss. Absolutely no hair loss and no rubbed areas in shoulders or hips.
