I haven't used Horseware Ireland blankets before but they have a good reputation for durability. I bought this for an Azteca who's very hard on his clothes (and everything else within reach). I found him wet under last year's turnout durng a multi-day rainy spell, so I needed another option. This fits okay (these run long) and although I prefer traditional flank straps, the tail strap works reasonably well to keep the turnout centered.

Rambo, Amigo or Rhino: which Horseware blanket fits
Horseware sells three turnout lines in a ladder of outer fabrics: Amigo in polyester, Rhino in polypropylene and Rambo in ballistic nylon. Pick the fabric by how hard your horse is on blankets, and pick the weight by your winters.
Horseware states that all of its turnouts are waterproof in excess of 3000 mm and breathable to 3000 g/m², so the lines differ in outer strength, fit features and guarantee length rather than in the waterproof rating.

Rambo blankets: ballistic nylon and a 10-year guarantee
Rambo is Horseware’s ballistic nylon line. The standard Rambo outer is 1000 denier ballistic nylon 6.6, used on the Original, Wug, Optimo and Duo turnouts.
Rambo Supreme and the 1680D turnouts step up to 1680 denier ballistic nylon, which Horseware describes as 120% stronger than its standard 1000 denier. Always name the Rambo model when you compare denier, because it changes from line to line.
Vari-Layer fill puts the weight where a horse needs it: a medium weight is 250 g over the back, 150 g mid and 100 g at the base, and a heavy weight is 450 g, 150 g and 150 g. Select Rambo turnouts and hoods carry the 10-year Turnout Guarantee for purchases from January 1, 2024.

Amigo blankets: everyday polyester turnouts
Amigo is Horseware’s polyester line, in 600, 900 and 1200 denier outers and weights from a no-fill sheet to a 400 g heavyweight. Bravo 12, Ripstop 900 and the 1200D turnouts come in standard, Wug, XL and pony cuts, with removable neck pieces on many styles.
The Amigo XL has a 20% deeper cut neck for shoulder room and a 10% deeper body for a larger frame. Amigo carries Horseware’s standard 2-year warranty and is not part of the extended Turnout Guarantee, so choose Rhino or Rambo if you want that longer cover.

Rhino blankets: polypropylene turnouts and HexStop
Rhino is the middle step of Horseware’s ladder: a 1000 denier polypropylene outer with a barrier layer, between Amigo’s polyester and Rambo’s ballistic nylon.
The Rhino HexStop Plus uses a hexagonal ripstop weave that Horseware says is 30% stronger than standard polypropylene, with Vari-Layer fill in 250 g and 450 g weights. Rhino also comes in Wug and pony cuts, and select Rhino turnouts and hoods carry a 3-year Turnout Guarantee on top of the 2-year standard warranty.
Rhino also makes the Original Stable Blanket in 250 g and 450 g and hoods in no fill and 150 g, so a Rhino turnout can sit in one matched family of layers from barn to paddock.

Horseware stable blankets, liners and coolers
Under a turnout or on its own in the barn, Horseware makes stable blankets, liners and coolers in the same families. Rambo has the Airmax liner and cooler and the Dry Rug Supreme cooler, Amigo has fleece coolers, and the Horseware label covers liners and Ionic Therapy pieces.
A liner adds warmth under a turnout, so one outer covers a wider range of nights. A cooler goes on after a ride to dry a sweaty coat before the horse is turned out or blanketed.

Horseware blanket sizing: measure, then subtract 4 inches
Horseware’s size guide says to measure from the center of the chest, across the point of the shoulder, to the center of the tail, and then remove 4 inches (10 cm) before you choose a size. Sizes in our catalog run mostly in 3-inch steps from 30 to 90 inches, with letter sizes for hoods and coolers.
- Use a soft measuring tape and hold it level from the center of the chest, across the point of the shoulder, to the center of the tail.
- Subtract 4 inches (10 cm) from that measurement.
- Choose the size that matches, and pick a Petite, Pony or XL cut where your horse needs it.
