Great saddle pad for the heat of summer
I was exceptionally impressed with how thick this pad was when I opened the box. Then we tried it out and it definitely protected the wither.
The Shires seems to be the best value and is cut slightly longer front to back than the others. It also has a contoured topline, the spine relief and black billet straps to blend in with the saddle.

ARMA jump and close contact saddle pads
Elegance 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 differ only in the quilting (square, linear or chevron) and share an Ultra Dri-Zone lining and a metal ARMA badge; the Satin Jump pad adds a gloss satin top with contrast piping and comes in five colors.
ARMA all purpose saddle pads
The all purpose shape sits between the two and suits most general purpose saddles. The Air Motion Luxe is the warm-weather pad: an open airflow fabric with hexagonal, non-crush quilting. The Lite comes sized Pony/Cob and Cob/Horse instead of by seat size.
Shires ARMA Air Motion saddle pads
When it came, I was doubtful that it would help because it's kind of a crushy mesh material with very open weave. Turns out it really does keep my guy cooler!! That means there's significantly less sweat (almost none where the pad is not directly under the saddle) and even more amazing is the fact that very little of that transfers to my saddle.
Shires ARMA 17-18" saddle pads
Seems many saddle pad makers don't realize a lot of us ride with larger saddles that do not fit their pads, especially if using a half pad with it. I don't like the half pads getting all dirty in the back. I like the large Shires pads for this reason. They are great for larger saddles and/or half pads.
ARMA half pads
A half pad goes over your saddle pad and under the saddle. The Corrective Half Pad and Corrective Lined Half Pad take ARMA's shims (see the withers section); the Deluxe Cotton Half Pad has a ProComfort SupaFleece underside and slots for retaining straps so it stays put over a saddlecloth.
Shires Supafleece shaped pads for the hunter ring
A shaped pad follows the outline of the saddle, so it frames a hunter or close contact saddle with a neat white rim. Shires makes them with SupaFleece, a synthetic fleece that feels like sheepskin and goes in the washing machine: a rolled SupaFleece rim on a quilted cotton-blend pad, or a full SupaFleece lining for more cushion. The ARMA Acrilan Lined pad is the close contact option with a generous synthetic fleece underside.

I bought this pad over a year ago to fit my Wintec all purpose CC saddle, which is a 16.5", and I was having a hard time finding a pad that both had padding, keepers, and rolled edges. This pad has never slipped on my TB/Warmblood cross, and always looks good. I have put this pad through the washer and air-dried every 1-2 weeks to clean for the next hunt, never had a string/fray/loss of "fluff" on edges. It comes back white and clean.
The Shires Supafleece pads are very nice. Not real sheepskin but they feel very similar (it's nicer than some real sheepskin saddle pads I own. I actually like it more than my Mattes) and they wash easily without having to worry about how the sheepskin will look once you are done.
Shires pads for high withers and changing toplines
When a horse gains or loses muscle, the saddle that fit in spring can bridge or rock by fall. ARMA's corrective pads have four pockets and come with three sets of low-compression shims, so you can build up the front, back or sides while the horse comes back into shape. The Shires Performance High Wither Fleece Pad is a half pad cut high over the withers with a synthetic fleece underside.
Shims fine-tune the fit of a saddle that is close; they don't replace a saddle that is the wrong shape. If the tree is too narrow or the flocking is uneven, have your saddle fitter look first, then use shims to keep the fit right as the horse changes.

I purchased a half pad in the 15" - 16.5" size from the Shires Arma range and rode in it last night. Pony was considerably happier to go forwards and felt a lot freer in his movement (I'm aware this could also be due to the saddle being reflocked and adjusted.)

For the show ring, riders choose a pad that frames the saddle and photographs well. The ARMA Satin pads have a gloss satin quilt with coordinating piping and a wear leather; Elegance pads have a smooth fabric, a metal ARMA badge and three quilting patterns; and Deluxe Cotton pads give the traditional small-square white quilt. White is the standard in the hunter and dressage rings.
For schooling, choose easy care. The ARMA Lite pad is made from an easy-care fabric with diamond quilting and can be used alone or under a half pad, and the Lite Dressage pad does the same job under a dressage saddle. The Air Motion Luxe keeps air moving under the saddle in summer, and the Performance Dressage pad's WickAway lining is made for everyday use as well as competing.

Shires saddle pad sizes: match the pad to your saddle
Most Shires and ARMA saddle pads are sized by the seat size of your saddle, not by the horse. Measure the seat from the nail head beside the pommel to the center of the cantle, then choose the pad size that includes that number. The ARMA Lite and the High Wither pad use horse-type sizes instead.
