What riders say about Shires bridles

Riders tell us Shires bridles feel like better leather than the price suggests and that the sizing is honest. Here is what they say about Velociti, Avignon and Shires reins, word for word.

Shires Velociti Lusso Padded Raised Flash Bridle

★★★★★

I was shocked at the quality of leather. The padding is very soft and squishy, the leather is a pretty color and looks actually dyed and not painted on. I ordered a cob for my OTTB but had to exchange for a horse size.

Shires Velociti bridles

I've just bought the Shires Velociti Bridle last week! I actually love it for my cob. I was having issues as his head seems to be somewhere in between cob/pony - so I had to mix and match 2 bridles together, with a cob headpiece, pony browband, cob noseband and pony cheek pieces! However, I got the Shires Velociti bridle in Cob (I was convinced it was going to be far too big) but I love it!

Shires Velociti Rapida Figure 8 Bridle

★★★★★

I've ended up buying a whole Velociti Rapida grackle bridle now as I was so impressed with the anatomical headpiece. Great quality and fits beautifully

Shires Avignon bridles

I absolutely love my Shires bridle. I'm a bit rubbish at leather care but a year or so on it still looks new

Shires Avignon bridles

I love the traditional look of an old-fashioned flat hunt bridle. I bought this on a whim when it was on sale, and I am very pleased with the quality for the price! It looks great on my gelding. I am hoping to take him foxhunting or hunter pacing sometime wearing this bridle!

Shires Velociti reins

★★★★★

I have numerous pairs of these reins now. For the children they are ideal. Narrow in the hand, very flexible and my children love the nobbly bits so they can make sure they are holding the reins evenly. The best bit is that the nobbles are built into the rubber so if the pony bangs his head down, the kids don't get their hand ripped like they do using the rubber reins with the nobbles stitched on to the outside. These are WAY better.

In the Spotlight

The Shires bridles, browbands and reins riders choose most

Shires Velociti bridles: Rapida, Lusso and Fancy

Shires Velociti bridles are built around the FreedomFit headpiece: a wide, cushioned crown with a poll gap and a cutaway ear profile, with anti-shock padding on the headpiece, browband and noseband. The Ergonomic and Curved designs shape the noseband and cheek pieces to sit clear of the facial nerves.

Velociti Rapida bridles come with signature Velociti rubber grip reins and run Cob, Full and X-Full. Velociti Lusso is the Pro Series in vegetable-tanned European leather, sold without reins. Velociti Fancy bridles are square raised and fancy stitched in Oak Bark for the hunter ring, Pony to X-Full with matching reins.

See every Velociti bridle, girth and halter on the Shires Velociti page.

Shires Avignon bridles for hunters, eventers and dressage

Shires Avignon bridles are complete, classic bridles: each comes with its reins, square buckles and an anatomically shaped crown. The Middleburg is a flat hunt bridle with laced reins, the Wellington has the wide square raised look of the hunter ring, and the Nashville and Ocala are raised, padded show bridles.

For jumping, the Woodside is a raised figure 8 with a fleece-lined noseband and soft rubber grip reins; for dressage, the Aspen pairs a crank noseband with continental web reins. Avignon also sells nosebands, cheek pieces and a flash strap separately, so one bridle can change jobs.

Shires Aviemore browbands and training reins

Shires Aviemore is the finishing-touch line: small, large, wide and flower diamante browbands and a plaited browband in Pony, Cob, Full and X-Full, to swap onto a Shires bridle or most standard bridles of the same size. Aviemore Rubber Grip Training Reins have colored sections that show a rider where to hold the rein, in 48 and 54 inches.

Shires reins, rein stops and spare bridle parts

Shires reins come in four grips: laced, rubber grip, rubberized web and plain leather. Velociti Lusso reins come laced or nylon insert rubber grip in 54 and 60 inches, Velociti Gara Curb Reins are plain leather in 1/2 and 5/8 inch widths, and Avignon buckle-end reins use square buckles for quick bit changes.

Shires Rubber Rein Stops and Silicone Rein Stops keep the rings of a running martingale from sliding down to the bit; each is sold in pairs.

Shires bridle sizes: Pony, Cob, Full and X-Full

Shires bridles come in Pony, Cob, Full and X-Full; on our size menus Full is listed as Horse and X-Full as Large Horse. Measure your horse's best-fitting bridle, then read across the chart, which is Shires Equestrian's own, converted to inches.

Riders tell us Shires sizing is honest and that the Velociti Cob is roomier than it looks: one OTTB owner exchanged a Cob for a Full (Horse). Shires reins come in 48 inches (pony), 54 inches and 60 or 61 inches; Velociti Western roper reins are 8 feet.

  1. Lay the bridle flat and measure from one bit ring, up the cheekpiece, over the headpiece and down to the other bit ring.
  2. Measure the browband end to end, not including the loops.
  3. Measure the noseband all the way around where it sits, about two fingers below the cheekbone.
  4. If the headpiece fits one size and the noseband another, choose the size that fits the headpiece and browband, then swap the noseband.

Who Shires bridles are for

Shires bridles are best for riders who want anatomical comfort or a classic show look in good leather without paying top-tier prices, and for barns that need sturdy bridles in many sizes.

  • Owners of young or sensitive horses: the Velociti Rapida Ergonomic Flash and Curved Flash bridles keep pressure off the poll and facial nerves.
  • Hunter and equitation riders: the Velociti Lusso Hunter Cavesson, the Velociti Fancy Square Raised Padded Bridle and the Avignon Wellington.
  • Eventers and show jumpers: the Avignon Woodside and the Velociti Rapida Figure 8.
  • Dressage riders: the Avignon Aspen with its crank noseband and the Velociti Lusso Dressage Flash.
  • Lesson barns and pony families: Pony to X-Full sizes and Aviemore color-banded training reins.
  • Look elsewhere for a draft or oversize horse: the largest Shires size is X-Full, and one rider found it too small for her Clydesdale.

Shires bridles FAQ

Do Shires Velociti bridles come with reins?

It depends on the line. Velociti Rapida bridles come with signature Velociti rubber grip reins, and Velociti Fancy bridles come with matching reins. Velociti Lusso bridles are sold without reins, so you can choose Lusso laced or nylon insert rubber grip reins to match.

What is the difference between Shires Velociti Rapida and Lusso?

Both use the FreedomFit headpiece with a poll gap and cutaway ear profile. Rapida bridles include reins and come in Cob, Full and X-Full. Lusso is the pro series in vegetable-tanned European leather with deeper padding, sold without reins.

Close

Which Shires bridle is best for the hunter ring?

Shires designed the Velociti Lusso Hunter Cavesson specifically for the American hunter arena. The Velociti Fancy Square Raised Padded Bridle and the Avignon Wellington give the wide, square raised look, and the Avignon Middleburg is a traditional flat hunt bridle.

Can I buy replacement parts for a Shires Avignon bridle?

Yes. Avignon cavesson, flash and figure 8 nosebands, cheek pieces, a flash strap and a flash attachment loop are sold separately, so you can change a noseband or fix the fit without buying a new bridle.
