Buying tip:Avignon bridles come with reins, and the fittings differ: the Woodside, Ocala, Wellington, Nashville and Middleburg use hook and stud fittings, while the Aspen and Louisville use buckles. Pick the bridle by discipline, then check the size, Pony to Large Horse, on the product page.

Shires Avignon bridles: which one for your discipline

Shires describes the Avignon bridles by the ring they are made for. The Woodside is a favorite of eventers and show jumpers, a raised, padded and fancy stitched figure 8. The Wellington has the wider, more substantial look that is popular in the hunter arena, and the Nashville is a classic English show bridle with anatomic features.

For quieter looks, the Aspen is a dressage-appropriate bridle with no bling at all and a crank noseband, the Louisville has a standard noseband, and the Middleburg is a classic hunt bridle in wide, flat leather with no decorative stitching.

Shires Avignon rubber grip reins and laced reins

Rubber reins are the largest group by search demand for the brand. The Buckle Billet Rubber Grip Reins have a leather base with a textured rubber grip, in 5/8 inch by 54 inches, and square buckles instead of hook and stud for easier bit changes. The Buckle Rubberized Web and Buckle Soft Rubber Grip Reins also have square buckles; the Soft Rubber Grip and Rubber Grip Reins use hook and stud fittings.

For a traditional look, the Fancy Stitched Laced Reins are 5/8 inch wide with hook and stud fittings, and the Rubber Reins with Leather Stoppers have leather bit ends and rubber hand ends with a grip pattern.

Avignon nosebands, flash straps and replacement parts

Shires sells Avignon nosebands to replace the one on an Avignon bridle: fancy and plain cavesson, fancy and plain flash, and the Figure Eight Noseband that turns a standard noseband bridle into a figure 8 bridle. Cheek pieces, flash straps and flash attachment loops are sold separately, and the Bit Keepers hold the cheeks of a full cheek bit in place.

The cheek pieces come in horse (5/8 inch wide) and pony (1/2 inch wide) sizes.

Avignon breastplates and martingales

The Three Point Breastplate is a classic design in leather with elastic inserts. The Five Point Breastplate adds soft leather covered padding and removable sheepskin pads, with a detachable running martingale attachment. The Elastic Breast Girth is a popular style with eventers and field hunters.

For martingales, Avignon makes raised, padded and fancy stitched running and standing styles, plus a standing martingale attachment, and a German martingale that comes with continental web reins.

Avignon side reins, draw reins and training aids

For schooling, Avignon makes Leather & Elastic Side Reins with trigger clips, Leather Draw Reins that Shires says are for flat work only, and a De Gogue that Shires says is used to strengthen a horse's back muscles and engage the rear legs. The Daisy Rein attaches to the bridle crown and both D-rings on the saddle.
