Buying tip:Equinavia and Horze bridles suit riders who want leather tack in dressage, hunter, jumper and bitless styles. Start with three checks: the size (Small Pony to Large Horse), whether reins are included (every Equinavia bridle includes them; the Horze Clermont, Grayson, Highbury and Stewart do not), and the noseband style your discipline calls for.

What riders say about Equinavia and Horze bridles

Riders tell us what they notice first: how reins feel in the hand, how a bitless bridle sits and how the leather wears.

Horze Slender Intertwined Reins

★★★★★

Love LOVE this comfy durable long wearing thin reins for my poor arthritic hands! Easy to hold, no pain, beautiful look especially with slender bridles I prefer on my horses fine heads! Brown is a slight brown/black 2 tone perfect for my new stubben ebony bridle!

Horze Denver Bitless Bridle

★★★★★

I really like the look and quality of this bitless bridle! I tried out an inexpensive synthetic one just to see how my horse would do, and he went well in it. But it soon started fraying and I didn’t like how it dug into his nose. The Denver bridle is well padded, sits level on his nose, and no metal fittings touch him. It was easy to make adjustments on both sides of the bridle, too. It came with a set of web reins that I was going to keep as a backup set, but I am actually using them. I have ridden three times in this bridle and my horse and I are both loving it so far!

Horze Vienna Weymouth Dressage Bridle

★★★★★

Lovely and affordable double bridle that comes with the reins! So many do not come with reins. Nice leather and fits my horse well. Plenty of room for his “donkey” ears and refined and not bulky. Very happy with it.

Horze Thin Rein w/Rubber Inside

★★★★★

Soft, supple leather, and the rubber on the inside is just the right amount of grip. I will probably buy another pair as a back up!

Horze Clermont Ergonomic Crystal Bridle

I’ve followed this brand, and their quality is good, and much better value than the big tack brands

Equinavia and Horze bitless bridles and hackamores

Six bitless-style bridles are in stock: two from Equinavia, the Saga Bitless and the Saga Hackamore, and four from Horze, the Denver, the Leather Bitless, the Lyon side-pull and the Montana 2-way.

The Saga Bitless and the Horze Leather Bitless are cross-under designs, where straps cross under the jaw and the reins attach to rings instead of bit cheeks. The Saga Hackamore uses stainless steel side pieces with leather under them and a leather headstall with an ergonomic crown, and it comes with rubber reins. The Horze Denver is soft leather, padded at noseband, neck and browband, with a double closure at the nose and web reins included. The Lyon is a side-pull with a shaped, padded headpiece and a removable browband.

The Saga Bitless is the best-selling Equinavia bridle on this page. The Horze Montana is the one to look at if you are not sure your horse wants to go without a bit: it has removable bit straps, so it works both ways. Horze says its Leather Bitless is not legal for showing in many disciplines, so check your rule book before you enter. Equinavia also sells the Saga Classic Hackamore Noseband, which attaches to the cheekpieces of a bridle you already own.

Dressage bridles: Valkyrie, Saga, Clermont, Grayson

Dressage riders have plenty to choose from across both ranges, from a padded Saga to crystal-browband Horze models. Horze Clermont and Grayson are two of the four best-selling styles on this page.

The Equinavia Valkyrie Anatomic Dressage Bridle has a wide crown contoured around the ears, a raised, padded flash noseband that attaches a bit further back to stay off the facial nerves, a curved black crystal browband and Flexi rubber reins. The Saga Dressage Crank Noseband Bridle has a crank noseband with a flash, a single row of crystals on the browband, a mono crown and web rubber reins with hand stops. The Saga Padded Dressage Bridle pairs a padded French cavesson and removable flash with a padded brow. For a double bridle, the Saga Double Bridle comes with two sets of reins, one plain and one with hand stops.

On the Horze side, the Clermont has a crystal browband, a patent leather noseband and a detachable nose strap. The Grayson has a pull-back noseband with a detachable flash and a V-shaped browband with three rows of crystals, with buckle ends for changing bits. The Montrose has a wide padded noseband with a narrow flash and a diamante browband, and the Vienna Weymouth is a double bridle that comes with leather reins with stops and plain curb reins. The Clermont, Grayson and Highbury do not include reins.

Hunter, jumper and eventing bridles in leather

For the hunter ring, the Valkyrie Classic Wide Noseband Hunter Bridle is the best-selling Equinavia hunter bridle on this page. It has a traditional crown piece, half-inch cheeks, a raised, lined wide noseband with fancy stitching and matching laced reins. The Saga Fancy Stitched Hunter, the Saga Wide Noseband Hunter (1.25 inch noseband) and the Valkyrie Wide Noseband Hunter (1 1/4 inch lined noseband) cover the same look in different builds, and all include laced reins.

Jumper and eventing riders have figure 8 nosebands, which Equinavia describes as popular with eventers and open jumpers: the Saga Fancy Stitched Figure 8 and the Valkyrie Fancy Stitched Figure 8, which has a sheepskin center disc. The Valkyrie Fancy Stitched Jumper Bridle has a removable flash and padding and is suited to hunter or equitation rings. The Horze Stewart Anatomical Bridle is the single best-selling style on this page: an ergonomic noseband that follows the jaw, soft lined leather, a clincher browband and no reins included.

Smaller riders can look at the Valkyrie Fancy Stitched Pony Bridle, a scaled-down hunter bridle with pony-size laced reins. Stock is thin, so check the size run before you plan around it.

Equinavia Saga vs Valkyrie: which line fits

Equinavia makes the two lines to different briefs. Saga is the traditional collection: bridles, reins and nosebands in classic styles. Valkyrie is the premium-leather line with a crown cut a little wider to spread poll pressure. Both use stainless steel hardware, most with hook stud closures, and every bridle in both lines comes with reins.

Pick Saga if you want a bitless or hackamore option, a double bridle or a crescent noseband, since those are only in that line right now. Pick Valkyrie if you want the anatomic dressage or jumper bridle, or the classic wide-noseband hunter. The details below come from Equinavia’s own product descriptions.

Reins: rubber, web, laced and plain leather

Ten styles are reins or rein accessories, and they differ in grip and in how they attach. Equinavia reins end in hook studs; the Horze web reins end in buckles with stainless steel hardware and attached leather bit stops, so match the end to your bridle before you order.

For grip, Equinavia offers the Saga Flexi Rubber Reins (pimple-grip rubber that is more pliable than standard rubber), the Saga Web Rubber Reins with hand stops, the Valkyrie Easy Grip Rubber Reins with larger grip indentations and the Valkyrie Rubber Lined Laced Reins, a hunter-style laced rein with rubber on the underside. Horze has the Slender Web Reins, the Slender Intertwined Reins, which weave rubber through web for traction in wet conditions, and the Thin Rein with rubber inside. The two Slender styles are 5/8 inch wide and come in Full (57 inches) and Pony (53 inches).

For plain leather, the Horze Laelia Leather Reins with Stops are 4/8 inch wide, suit both snaffle and full bridles and make it easy to see whether the reins are held evenly. The Laelia Plain Leather Dressage Reins have no stops and are meant as the second, curb rein on a double bridle or a pelham. The Horze Rein-Aid Soft Inserts, sold in pairs, add elastic sections between the bit and the reins.

Nosebands, browbands and spare bridle parts

Five parts let you change a bridle you already own. The Equinavia Saga Crescent Noseband replaces a caveson and noseband and includes the caveson; its crescent shape creates a lever effect that Equinavia says works on horses that pull. The Saga Fancy Stitch Detachable Flash Noseband adds a flash to a traditional noseband, and its contrast stitching blends with most brown bridles. The Saga Classic Hackamore Noseband attaches to your cheekpieces through two stainless steel side rings.

From Horze, the Flash Noseband Strap is a spare that turns any cavesson into a flash, in one size that fits most horses. The Brass Clincher Browband is a leather browband with brass clinchers, traditional with eventers, measured stitch to stitch at 14 inches in Full and 12.5 inches in Pony, in black or brown leather with brass.

Bridle sizing: Small Pony to Large Horse

Sizes on this page run Small Pony, Pony, Cob, Horse and Large Horse, plus a single One Size style. Horse is the widest run, with the most styles in stock. Find Your Fit above the grid opens each size.

Use a bridle that fits your horse now as the guide: compare its cheekpiece, noseband and browband lengths with the size you pick, rather than going by breed or the size on an older bridle. Browband and rein lengths are given on the product pages where the maker lists them, such as the Brass Clincher Browband (Full 14 inches, Pony 12.5 inches) and the Slender reins (Full 57 inches, Pony 53 inches).

Who Equinavia bridles are for

Equinavia and Horze bridles are for riders who want leather tack in dressage, hunter, jumper and bitless styles. The rider types below come from what buyers choose here and what they tell us.

  • Dressage riders who want a crystal or anatomic look buy the Horze Clermont and Grayson, the Montrose or the Valkyrie Anatomic Dressage Bridle. Clermont and Grayson are two of the four best-selling styles on this page.
  • Eventers and open jumpers buy the Horze Stewart Anatomical Bridle, the single best-selling style here, or the Saga and Valkyrie figure 8 bridles and the Saga Crescent Noseband.

  • Riders trying a bitless bridle buy the Saga Bitless, Horze Denver or Lyon, or the Montana 2-way for a horse that may go either way.
  • Riders with small or arthritic hands buy the slim Horze reins; reviewers tell us the Slender Intertwined Reins are easy to hold.

Equinavia bridles and reins FAQ

Do Equinavia bridles come with reins?

Yes. Every complete Equinavia bridle in the Saga and Valkyrie ranges is sold with reins: web rubber, Flexi rubber, rubber or laced, depending on the model. Horze varies: the Denver, Leather Bitless, Venice, Vienna and Weston include reins, while the Clermont, Grayson, Highbury, Stewart, Montrose and Beaufort do not.

What is the difference between Equinavia Saga and Valkyrie?

Saga is Equinavia’s traditional collection with a single crown, and it is the only Equinavia line here with bitless, hackamore and double bridles. Valkyrie uses premium leather and a crown cut about 1/4 inch wider than a traditional crown, and it has the anatomic dressage and jumper bridles. Both use stainless steel hardware and hook stud closures.

Close

Are bitless bridles legal for showing?

Often not. Horze states that its Leather Bitless Bridle is not legal for showing in many disciplines. Check the rule book for your discipline and association before you enter a class.

Close

What bridle size do I need?

Sizes run Small Pony, Pony, Cob, Horse and Large Horse. Compare the cheekpiece, noseband and browband lengths of a bridle that fits your horse now with the size you are choosing, and use Find Your Fit to open each size.

Close

Which reins give the most grip?

Rubber is what reins use for grip. Equinavia’s Saga Flexi Rubber and Valkyrie Easy Grip reins are rubber made to stay pliable in the hand, and Horze’s Slender Intertwined Reins weave rubber through web for traction in wet conditions. Plain leather reins such as the Horze Laelia have stops but no rubber.

Close

Who are Equinavia bridles for?

Riders who want leather tack in dressage, hunter, jumper and bitless styles: dressage riders who like an anatomic or crystal look, eventers and open jumpers, hunter-ring riders and riders trying a bitless bridle. Look elsewhere for sizes above Large Horse or a full range of Western tack.
