Shires publishes one chart for its Moretta long riding boots, in three heights. Height is the back height of the boot; calf is the range each width fits at its widest point. At US 8, Regular height measures 46 cm (18.1 in), Short 42 cm (16.5 in) and Tall 48 cm (18.9 in).

How to measure

How to measure for Shires Moretta tall boots

Take three measurements, ideally later in the day and in the breeches and socks you ride in, then read them against the Shires Moretta chart.

  1. Calf: sit with your knee bent at a right angle and your foot flat, and measure around the widest part of your calf. Choose the calf width whose range includes it.
  2. Height: still seated, measure from the floor up the back of your leg to the crease behind your knee. Compare it with the Short, Regular and Tall height columns.
  3. Foot: stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall. Match it to the inside foot length in the size conversion table.

Leather tall boots settle at the ankle as they break in, so a new pair that sits high behind the knee is normal. If your calf sits at the top of one width’s range, compare the next width up; riders tell us the leather eases with wear.

Shires Moretta country boot sizing: Pamina, Teramo and Jovanne

Shires Moretta country boots are made in US women’s sizes 6 to 11 in one regular height, so the choice is calf width. The Pamina comes in Regular, Wide and X Wide calves; the lace-front Teramo and the fleece-lined Jovanne come in Regular and Wide. A full lace-up front, as on the Teramo, lets you fine-tune the leg.

Shires Moretta paddock, XGRIP country and trail boots use the same foot sizing as the tall boots: whole US women’s sizes, most from 6 to 11, with the Rosetta and Clio starting at 5. Kids’ paddock boots run in US youth sizes 11 to 13 and 1 to 4, and the Kids’ Gianna Field Boot comes in youth sizes 13 and 1–7, with a tall height in 5–7.
