Buying tip:Match the bit size to your horse first. Korsteel bits on Tack of the Day run from 3.5 to 6 inches, and most of the range comes in 5 and 5.5 inches. Then choose the cheek: eggbutt for steady contact, loose ring for a mobile mouth, full cheek to help with turning.

Korsteel snaffle bits: pick the cheek, then the mouth

The cheek is the part of a snaffle that sits outside the mouth, and it changes how the bit feels in your hands. Korsteel makes the four common snaffle cheeks, each in jointed, French link, mullen and twisted mouthpieces.

Dr Bristol, Waterford, French link and slow twist mouthpieces are all made on more than one of these cheeks, so you can change the mouthpiece and keep the cheek your horse already likes.

Copper, sweet iron and rubber mouthpieces

Korsteel makes the same bits in different metals. Its stainless steel is the standard choice. Copper and sweet iron are described by Korsteel as warmer than stainless steel and as encouraging salivation and relaxation.

Rubber mouthpieces are thicker, so the pressure from the reins spreads over a larger area. Korsteel describes them as softer on the corners and bars of the mouth, and says soft rubber encourages the horse to chew and salivate. The single joint of any Korsteel snaffle works with a nutcracker action on the tongue, bars and palate.

Korsteel gags, pelhams and kimblewicks

For horses and riders that need more than a snaffle, Korsteel makes leverage bits. A gag applies poll pressure and, Korsteel says, encourages the horse to lift off the forehand. A pelham combines a snaffle and a curb: the top rein gives snaffle pressure and the bottom rein adds leverage and curb chain pressure.

A kimblewick has curb action but works with a single rein, and the slotted style gives two rein slots for different strength. Check your discipline rules before you show in any leverage bit.

Korsteel stirrups, spurs and bit accessories

Korsteel also makes stirrup irons and spurs. The Knife Edge stirrups are a classic style that Korsteel calls acceptable in any discipline, with white rubber treads. The Knife Edge 1 Way Swivel has a subtle flexing footbed for less impact on the rider's ankle, and the Aluminum Stirrups are ultra-lightweight with a wide tread.

Spurs run from Prince of Wales and German rounded styles, to roller ball spurs that Korsteel says give a more subtle contact. Rubber and gel bit guards protect the corners of the mouth from rubs and pinching.

Who Korsteel is for

Korsteel suits riders who want a wide choice of mouthpieces and cheeks in one brand.

  • Riders trying a new mouthpiece: the same cheek comes in stainless steel, copper, sweet iron and rubber.
  • Young or green horses: Korsteel describes the sweet iron full cheek snaffle as ideal for green horses.
  • Horses that lean or fix on the forehand: loose ring snaffles are described as discouraging this.
  • Riders adding a double bridle: Korsteel makes bradoons and sliding curb bits.
  • Riders who also need spurs and stirrups: knife edge and aluminum stirrups, and Prince of Wales spurs.
  • Look elsewhere for a bit with a custom mouthpiece or a specific cheek length: Korsteel lists fixed styles and sizes.
