Shires Velociti Lusso Anatomical Girth in havana leather

Find your fit

Buying tip:Shires girths suit dressage riders in long-billet saddles, riders who jump in studs, owners of big horses who need a 58-inch girth or longer, and horses that rub or sweat under a plain girth. Measure with your saddle on before you order: riders tell us the girths with elastic at both ends can fit a size longer than they expect.

What riders say about Shires girths

Riders tell us Shires Velociti Lusso leather feels soft from the first ride and wipes clean, and several who tried pricier anatomic girths went back to Shires ARMA because their horses settled in it.

Shires Velociti Lusso Dressage Girth

★★★★★

This Shires leather short girth is one of the best I have used. Both for jumping and for dressage, it is stable, soft, and most importantly for me, leather. Comparable to brands costing 2x more!

Shires Velociti Lusso Anatomical Girth

… The leather is extremely soft and pliable. I have another more expensive leather girth that is very stiff and I never use it. I wanted a leather girth that wouldn't be uncomfortable for my horse, and this one fits the bill. The anatomic design is great and doesn't interfere with my horse's movement. She seems very happy wearing it!

Shires Velociti Lusso Dressage Girth

I absolutely love this girth. The leather is super soft, feels high quality and it's nice and cushy. Contours perfectly so my horse is comfortable for our entire ride. Would consider this a fantastic dupe for the LeMieux dressage girth. Only con is that this girth does run a bit large. My guy normally needs a 24" so I ordered a 24" but it was too big. Sent it back and got a 22" and it fits perfectly.

Shires ARMA Supafleece Anatomic Girth

I had ordered this same girth elsewhere back in June in a size 50, which was too big, so I figured a 48 would work. When I went to try the 48" it was still too large and it seems like it is the elastic that is the issue.

Shires Fleece Lined Girth

Needed a 58" for a big warmblood - other manufacturers stop at sizes 54-56", this was the only one I could find in this style offered in 58". I was so pleased with the girth I purchased a second one and so far they seem to be holding up well to use and washing.

Shires ARMA Supafleece Anatomic Girth

It's a cheaper option but my horse loves his Arma girth like this one. I tried the Fairfax girth but he prefers this girth by far.

In the Spotlight

The Shires, ARMA and Velociti girths riders buy most, by type

Shires dressage girths: short girths from 18 to 32 inches

A Shires dressage girth is a short girth for saddles with long billets, made in 18 to 32 inches. Choose by what sits against your horse.

The Velociti Lusso Dressage Girth is contoured leather with a soft calf-leather lining. The ARMA Memory Foam and ARMA Performance dressage girths use technical synthetics with elastic at both ends, and the ARMA Anti-Chafe Dressage Girth uses a waffle fabric that resists moisture build-up. The Shires Performance Supafleece and Shires Neoprene dressage girths are the washable, everyday choices.

Shires anatomic girths for jumping and all-purpose saddles

Shires anatomic girths are long girths, 38 to 58 inches, shaped to curve back from the elbow so the horse moves freely behind the shoulder.

The Velociti Lusso Anatomical Girth is padded leather with roll-away edges, and the Velociti Lusso Stud Girth adds the belly guard Shires shapes for horses jumping in studs. The ARMA Anatomic Girth uses anti-chafe waffle fabric; the ARMA Performance Anatomic and Atherstone girths add memory foam or an aerated outer. For a traditional look, the Shires Salisbury Atherstone Leather Girth is a leather overlay girth with white stitching.

Shires fleece, neoprene and anti-chafe girths for sensitive horses

For a horse that rubs, sweats or gets girthy, Shires makes three kinds of lining: fleece that cushions, neoprene and airflow fabrics that wash and dry fast, and an anti-chafe waffle fabric.

Shires recommends its Anti-Chafe Contour Girth for horses with sensitive skin. The Shires Fleece Lined Girth is machine washable and runs to 68 inches, and the ARMA Removable Neoprene Girth has a lining that comes off for washing. Fleece does not suit every horse: a few riders tell us their horse got itchy in a fleece girth, and for those horses the anti-chafe and neoprene girths skip the fleece. The ARMA SupaFleece Girth Sleeve adds fleece to a girth you already own.

Shires Western cinches from ARMA and Velociti

Shires Western cinches come in 26 to 36 inches, each with a roller buckle and dee rings for training attachments.

The Velociti Leather Western Girth is oiled leather over memory foam, from Shires's Velociti Western line. The ARMA cinches come in perforated neoprene with a removable lining, perforated memory foam, and anti-chafe waffle fabric. The Velociti 2" Latigo replaces a worn latigo.

Shires, Shires ARMA and Shires Velociti girths: how the lines differ

Shires Equestrian, family-owned since 1968 in Leominster, Herefordshire, sells its girths under three names, and each one answers a different question: leather, technical fabric, or an everyday girth that goes in the washing machine.

Shires girth sizes and how to measure your horse

Shires girths are sized in inches in 2-inch steps: 18 to 32 inches for dressage girths, 30 to 68 inches for long girths, and 26 to 36 inches for Western cinches. Measure your horse with your own saddle and pad on, then check the size run for the style you want.

  1. Tack up with the saddle and pad you ride in, and stand your horse square.
  2. Long girth (jumping and all-purpose saddles): run a soft tape from the middle hole of the billets on one side, under the horse where the girth sits, to the middle hole on the other side. That length is your girth size; round to the nearest even inch.
  3. Dressage girth (long billets): measure the same way between the middle holes of the long billets. The buckles should sit below the saddle flap and clear of the elbow.
  4. Western cinch: Shires cinches run 26 to 36 inches; start from the length of the cinch that fits your horse now.
  5. Between sizes in a girth with elastic: the riders quoted on this page found the shorter size fit.

Shires girths FAQ

How do I choose the right Shires girth size?

Tack up with your own saddle and pad, then measure under the horse from the middle hole of the billets on one side to the middle hole on the other. Round to the nearest even inch: Shires girths come in 2-inch steps, 18 to 32 inches for dressage girths and 30 to 68 inches for long girths.

Close

What is the difference between a Shires dressage girth and a long girth?

A dressage girth is short, 18 to 32 inches, and fastens to the long billets of a dressage saddle below the flap. A long girth, 30 to 68 inches, fastens to the short billets of a jumping or all-purpose saddle under the flap. Shires makes both in leather, ARMA technical fabrics and fleece.

Close

Do Shires girths run large?

Two riders tell us their Shires girth fit long: one went from a 24 to a 22 in the Velociti Lusso Dressage Girth, and one found the elastic made the ARMA Supafleece Anatomic Girth fit a size larger. If you are between sizes in a girth with elastic, those riders found the shorter size fit.

Close

Which Shires girth is best for a girthy or sensitive horse?

Start with an anti-chafe waffle fabric, such as the Shires Anti-Chafe Contour Girth or the ARMA Anatomic Girth, or a padded leather Velociti Lusso Anatomical Girth. Fleece girths cushion well, but a few riders tell us their horse got itchy in fleece, so try one before you commit.

Close

What is the difference between Shires, ARMA and Velociti girths?

Shires Velociti girths are leather, led by the calf-lined Lusso range, plus Western cinches. Shires ARMA girths use technical fabrics: anti-chafe waffle, memory foam, Supafleece and removable neoprene. The core Shires range covers everyday fleece-lined, airflow, neoprene and leather girths.

Close

Who are Shires girths for?

Shires girths are best for riders who want a shaped, soft girth in the exact length their horse needs: dressage riders in long-billet saddles, riders who jump in studs, owners of big horses who need up to 68 inches, horses that rub or sweat, and Western riders who want a cinch from 26 to 36 inches.

Close

What sizes do Shires Western cinches come in?

The Shires Velociti Leather Western Girth and the ARMA AirFlow Memory Foam, Anti-Chafe and Neoprene Western cinches all come in 26 to 36 inches, in 2-inch steps.

Close

How do I clean a Shires fleece or neoprene girth?

The Shires Fleece Lined Girth is machine washable and dries quickly, and the ARMA Removable Neoprene Girth has a lining that comes off for washing. Riders tell us the Velociti Lusso leather girths need only a wipe with a damp cloth after a ride.
