What riders say about Shires fly masks and fly sheets

Riders tell us the same three things about Shires fly gear: the masks stay on, the mesh stays clear of the eyes, and the fly sheets stay cool.

Shires FlyGuard Fine Mesh Fly Mask w/Ears

★★★★★

By far my horses' favorite fly mask! The mesh is very fine and easy to see through, it is lightweight and stays well away from their eyes. The ears are breathable and keep the tiniest of gnats away. The gnats and flies are terrible in Northern Virginia and they wear them all summer during the days.

Shires Highlander Fine Mesh Detachable Neck Fly Sheet

★★★★★

This is the only fly sheet that has helped my horse with his sweet itch. It closes over the belly well and does not get hot.

Shires FlyGuard Pro Hi-Viz Fine Mesh Fly Mask w/Ears & Fringe

★★★★★

Great product I have had one for three years and it was still going strong, but got one for my other horse. I like the fact that the fringe doesn't impede their breathing and it moves and keeps flies off of their nose. It does give sun protection as well.

Shires FlyGuard Pro Deluxe Fly Mask w/Ears

★★★★★

Amazing. Pony size fits my cob perfectly. No having to try hand sew Velcro like I do with some other brands.

Shires fly sheets: Highlander, Tempest and sweet-itch sheets

Shires fly sheets come in two lines. Highlander is the tougher one, in 600-denier ripstop or fine mesh with full belly coverage; Tempest Original is a lighter knit mesh sheet with a neck cover you add separately. For horses that need more, the Tempest Original Summer Shield Set and the Shires Sweet-Itch Combo cover from the poll to the tail.

A fly sheet is not a rain sheet. The Highlander and Tempest fly sheets here are mesh, not waterproof, so switch to a turnout sheet when a storm rolls in. Fabric and UV figures are as Shires reports them.

Shires FlyGuard fly masks: which mask suits your horse

Shires FlyGuard fly masks come down to one choice: how much of your horse's face to cover. Most families come with ears or without, and with a plain nose, a fringe or a long nose; what changes between families is the fabric and how far the mesh sits off the eye.

Ears keep gnats and midges out of the ear; the earless and ear-hole Fine Mesh masks suit horses that object to anything on their ears. A nose fringe discourages flies around the muzzle without covering it, and a long nose covers the muzzle in mesh, which Shires recommends for white markings that sunburn. Riders tell us fit is why they stay with Shires masks: room for big ears, clearance for broad foreheads, and masks that stay on in a herd.

Shires fly protection for sweet itch, humid heat and sun

Match Shires fly gear to the problem your summer brings. Each one below has a Shires sheet, mask or boot built for it.

Your summer problemThe Shires pick
Sweet itchThe Shires Sweet-Itch Combo covers body, neck and poll, with a grazing-friendly hood and a belly flap that adjusts on both sides; riders also choose the Highlander Fine Mesh Detachable Neck Fly Sheet, which closes under the belly.
Heat and humidityThe lightest fabric that does the job: the Highlander Fine Mesh or Tempest Original knit mesh sheet, with a FlyGuard Air Motion mask, built to cut heat build-up under the mask.
Strong sun and pink nosesShires rates the Highlander Plus sheet and the Sweet-Itch Combo to block 90% or more of UV, and most FlyGuard masks at 70+ UV; for white muzzles, a long-nose mask such as the Pro Deluxe with Ears & Nose.
Early and late turnoutCooler, but low-light, high-insect hours: the FlyGuard Pro Hi-Viz masks add reflective, hi-viz fabric.
Legs, ears and noses under saddleARMA Mesh Fly Boots and Shires Airflow Turnout Socks come in sets of four; the ARMA Ear Bonnet and Shires nose nets screen out insects while you ride.

Shires fly sheet and fly mask sizing

Shires fly sheets use the same inch sizes as Shires blankets, so a horse that wears a 72 in a Shires blanket wears a 72 fly sheet: Highlander Plus runs 66 to 84, Highlander Fine Mesh 69 to 84, Tempest Original Standard Neck 48 to 84, the Summer Shield Set 54 to 84 and the Sweet-Itch Combo 57 to 87. Shires labels the same sizes in feet and inches (66 is 5'6", 72 is 6'0"), and matches the Tempest Original Fly Neck Cover Small to sheets 54 to 60, Medium to 63 to 69 and Large to 72 to 78.

Shires fly masks run from X Small Pony to X Large Horse and are measured across the face. A runs across the front of the face where the lower edge of the mask sits, cheek to cheek; B runs from behind the ear, over the poll side, down to the jaw strap; C runs up the face from the lower edge of the mask to the base of the ear. X Large Horse (Shires Extra Extra Full) is one size above Large Horse, in the FlyGuard Fine Mesh masks.

Shires fly sheet and fly mask FAQ

Which Shires fly mask should I buy?

Start with what your horse needs covered. For ears and eyes, the FlyGuard Fine Mesh with Ears is the classic choice. Add a nose fringe or a long nose if flies bother the muzzle or white markings burn, choose Air Motion for hot, humid summers, Pro Hi-Viz for early or late turnout, and an earless or ear-hole mask for a horse that dislikes anything on its ears.

What size Shires fly mask does my horse need?

Measure across the front of the face where the mask's lower edge sits, from behind the ear to the jaw strap, and up the face to the base of the ear, then compare with the Shires chart on this page. On Tack of the Day, Shires's Full is listed as Horse and Extra Full as Large Horse. Riders report that some cobs fit a Pony and that the Deluxe masks size generously, so measure rather than go by breed.

Close

What is the difference between the FlyGuard Fine Mesh, Air Motion, Stretch and Pro Deluxe masks?

Fine Mesh is the classic full-face mesh mask with fleece-padded seams. Air Motion uses a breathable 3D fabric that circulates air to reduce heat under the mask. Stretch masks use a four-way stretch body with a zip closure. Pro Deluxe lifts the mesh off the face with reinforced darts and a structured 3D eye frame, and its long-nose version covers the muzzle in UV60+ mesh.

Close

Which Shires fly sheet is best for sweet itch?

The Shires Sweet-Itch Combo is built for it: a grazing-friendly hood, a stretch ear panel and a belly flap that adjusts on both sides cover the horse from poll to tail, in 600D ripstop that Shires rates to block at least 90% of UV. Riders also use the Highlander Fine Mesh Detachable Neck Fly Sheet, which closes under the belly with a triple-strapped band.

Close

Are fly sheets worth it for horses?

For a horse that is bothered by biting insects, bleached by the sun or rubbing out its mane and tail, riders tell us a fly sheet is what lets them turn out in comfort through summer. Pick the lightest Shires sheet that covers what your horse needs: a Tempest Original knit mesh sheet for everyday turnout, a Highlander for full belly coverage, or the Sweet-Itch Combo for sweet itch.

Close

Do Shires fly sheets use the same sizes as Shires blankets?

Yes. Shires fly sheets come in the same inch sizes as Shires blankets, from 48 to 87 across the range, so measure your horse the same way and order the size your horse wears in a Shires blanket. The Shires blanket sizing page shows how to measure and how Shires's feet-and-inches labels convert.

Close

Does Shires make fly boots?

Yes. The ARMA Mesh Fly Boots, in Small, Medium and Large, and the Shires Airflow Turnout Socks, in Pony, Cob and Horse, are lightweight mesh boots sold in sets of four, made to keep flies and biting insects off the legs.
