Shires ARMA Hot/Cold Relief Boots - Black

Shires · ARMA
Shires ARMA horse boots for schooling, jumping, cross-country and turnout: Air Motion brushing, Carbon and OXI-ZONE tendon and fetlock, over reach and therapy boots, sized Small Pony to X Large Horse.

Riders tell us three things about Shires ARMA boots again and again: they last for years of daily use, they go through the washing machine, and the over reach boots stay on in the field. These are their words.
Shires ARMA Neoprene Over Reach Boots
★★★★★I adored these boots, I have used them consistently for the last 6 years, every three days I fling them in the washing machine with the other horsey wash stuff and they come up new every time. I’ve just bought some more pairs to have fancy white ones for the upcoming show season.
I live in Australia and these are the only boots that don’t get ruined by my OTTB!
I’ve got the ARMA brushing boots and had them for nearly 5 years. They are used 6 days a week and have stood up really well and are still going strong. For the money they are brilliant, much better than the LeMieux brushing boots I had which split the first time they went in the washing machine and cost twice as much as the ARMA ones.
I’ve tried SF, Majyk Equipe, Dover brand, ARMA, and Rambo so far. My Rambo and ARMA are on their third (!) year on 24/7.
These boots have the strongest velcro of any turnout boots we have seen. It does not come undone – even the farrier commented on the strength of the velcro keeping the boot on the horse (and he would know!)
I’ve owned both Shires and Veredus. I like both, but the Shires is better value for the money. I’m just as happy with those as I am with Veredus.

Shop all ›Shires ARMA brushing boots are the everyday boot for flatwork, hacking and schooling: each style wraps the cannon with a strike pad on the inside of the leg, where a horse knocks itself. The difference between them is the shell and the lining, from lightweight Air Motion mesh to the vented OXI-ZONE shell.
Shires describes Air Motion mesh as letting air circulate while the horse moves, and gives the Contour Pro a memory-foam core that springs back after each ride and recessed stitching to cut wear on the seams. The SupaFleece versions add a fleece trim at the top and bottom edges for horses that rub.

Shires ARMA Air Motion Brushing Boots
★★★★★I own quite a few pairs of these boots. They're my go-to for leg protection on my cow ponies. They're super soft, light, breathable and VERY easy to clean. The Velcro stays strong and the material is super durable. I love them and will continue to buy them.
Shires ARMA Air Motion Brushing Boots
I love my Shires Arma Air Motion boots for every day. Breathable, washable, dry quickly and not too expensive. I’ve tossed them in the washing machine and they come out looking great. I also own LeMieux fleece lined, which are great, but totally impractical if your horse sweats a lot/it’s hot out.

For jumping, Shires ARMA pairs open-front tendon boots in front with fetlock (ankle) boots behind. Open-front tendon boots cover the back of the leg and leave the front of the cannon open, so the horse still feels a rail; the fetlock boots match the tendon boots in each line.
There are four lines. The ARMA Tendon and Fetlock Boots have a hard strike-resistant shell over perforated neoprene. Carbon adds a TPU outer over a honeycomb foam center with CoolMax lining and mesh vents. OXI-ZONE uses a vented TPU shell with Air Motion 3D mesh and a fine metal mesh behind the vents. Vortex has a carbon fiber splint along the back of the tendon boot and Poron high-density foam. Each line except the original ARMA Tendon and Fetlock Boots also comes with a SupaFleece lining.
For cross-country, the ARMA Carbon XC boots come as a front and a hind pair. Shires builds them with a carbon-texture outer, an EVA foam center, a soft grip lining and an ActionGuard strike pack inside the boot over the cannon bone.
| Style | Built with (per Shires) | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Shires ARMA Tendon Boots | Contoured hard strike plates, perforated neoprene, elastic front | Pony, Cob, Horse |
| Shires ARMA Fetlock Boots | Impact-resistant shell, perforated neoprene, elastic front | Pony/Cob, Cob/Horse |
| Shires ARMA Carbon Tendon Boots | TPU outer, honeycomb foam, CoolMax lining, mesh vents, pin straps | Pony, Cob, Horse |

Over reach (bell) boots are the biggest group of Shires ARMA boots at Tack of the Day, and riders talk about them often: boots that stay on in the field and survive horses that are hard on them. The choice comes down to the bell and the top edge.
The classic ARMA Over Reach Boots are 6 mm rubber with a rubber-covered touch-close strap; the Fleece Trim version adds a soft trim at the pastern. Gloss, Comfort Gloss and Smooth Gloss boots are glossy PVC or rubber in bright colors with wide rubber straps. Neoprene Over Reach Boots are lighter for schooling and shows, and SupaFleece Neoprene adds a fleece top. The Soft Top has a soft edge that Shires says won't pick up shavings, and the Hard Over Reach Boots have hard sides with a padded neck.

Shires ARMA over reach (bell) boots
These are the Goldilocks bell boots--sturdy enough that they hold up reasonably but not so hard and stiff that they cause rubs. My mare is out 24/7. She is hard on her bell boots, and these will eventually wear out.
Shires ARMA over reach (bell) boots
Yes, Armas! They feel like gummy pull-ons but have velcro. I am on my second shoeing cycle with them on 24/7 on my sensitive chestnut. Even in -21c they still feel great!
I absolutely love my Shires Arma rubber ones! My horse is a big moving boy and they have stayed on and lasted me MONTHS!
Shires ARMA Soft Top Over Reach Boots
★★★★★
Repeat purchase. I use these boots for my horse’s turnout to stop him over reaching and pulling his front shoes off when he is playing in the field and also while riding. Good fit for my arab. They don’t hold water or rub.

Shires ARMA therapy boots are for the barn, not for riding: you fit them after work or while the horse stands. There are three kinds, and Shires sells a replacement ice pack for the relief boots.
The Subzero Ice Boots hold 32 gel cushions per boot; you chill them in the freezer, and they fit front or hind legs and are sold as a pair. The Hot/Cold Relief Boots (lower leg) and Hot/Cold Joint Relief Boots (knees, hocks and fetlocks) carry gel packs you heat in hot water or a microwave or cool in cold water or the freezer, in a neoprene boot with touch-close straps. The ARMA Magnetic Boots hold 10 magnets per boot, each rated 2,800 gauss by Shires, in a breathable fabric meant for short spells in the stall or while traveling. Talk to your veterinarian about when to use heat, cold or magnets on your horse.
| Style | Built with (per Shires) | Sizes |
|---|---|---|
| Shires ARMA Subzero Ice Boots | 32 gel cushions per boot, freezer-chilled, elastic straps | One Size |
| Shires ARMA Hot/Cold Relief Boots | Neoprene, removable gel packs, lower leg | One Size |
| Shires ARMA Hot/Cold Joint Relief Boots | Flexible neoprene with cut-outs for knees, hocks and fetlocks | One Size |
| Shires ARMA Replacement Ice Pack For Relief Boots | Fits ARMA 2006 series relief boots | One Size |
| Shires ARMA Magnetic Boots | 10 magnets per boot, airflow fabric, sold as a set of two | Pony, Cob, Horse |
Choose by the job first, then by how hot your horse runs. The table matches each job to the ARMA lines Shires builds for it; many horses need one pair for riding and another for the field.
| Job | Shires ARMA line | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Flatwork and hacking | Air Motion or Contour Pro brushing boots | Light, vented brushing boots with a strike pad on the inside of the leg See the boots |
| Hot days and horses that sweat | Air Motion, OXI-ZONE | Shires builds both around airflow: Air Motion mesh and OXI-ZONE 360 ventilation See the boots |
| Show jumping | Tendon boots in front, fetlock boots behind (ARMA, Carbon, OXI-ZONE, Vortex) | Open fronts so the horse still feels a rail; matching pairs in each line See the boots |
| Cross-country | Carbon Front and Hind XC boots | Full-wrap boots with an ActionGuard strike pack over the cannon See the boots |
| Turnout | Rubber Over Reach, Fleece Trim, Gloss or Soft Top | Rubber and PVC bells with wide straps; fleece or soft tops where a horse rubs See the boots |
| Schooling and shows | Neoprene or SupaFleece Neoprene Over Reach | Lighter neoprene bells with double-lock touch tape See the boots |
| After work | Subzero Ice, Hot/Cold Relief, Magnetic | Gel packs or magnets in a boot you fit at the barn See the boots |
Our customers come back to Shires ARMA for everyday boots they can wash, in enough colors to match a saddle pad, and for over reach boots that last in the field.
These boots are great - I'm lazy and hate doing polos for quick flat rides and these give my mare superb protection and are on and off in a snap. Clean super easily. The full size fits my 16.3 mare perfectly.
Shires ARMA Air Motion Brushing Boots
I haul in bells and arma air motion boots. They don’t trap heat and offer a bit of protection. I find its mostly loading and unloading when they take awkward steps & likely to hit themselves. Bonus: I will drench them when hosing afterwards. Horse arrives home with cold, dry legs.

Shires ARMA boots come in Small Pony, Pony, Cob, Horse, Large Horse and X Large Horse, though no single style is made in all six. Shires's own size charts use the UK names Full, Extra Full and XX Full for our Horse, Large Horse and X Large Horse. Fetlock Boots come in two overlap sizes, and the therapy boots are one size.
Measure your horse's leg and compare it with the chart for the style you want, because the same size name measures differently from line to line. For brushing, tendon and fetlock boots Shires gives the boot height (A) and width (B); for over reach boots it gives the height, the bottom edge and the top circumference that sits around the pastern.

Shires ARMA Neoprene Brushing Boots
★★★★★Love these brushing boots! They are replacing my white Woof Boots because the outer layer of the Woof Boots keeps peeling away from neoprene. The Arma boots have stitching around the outside edges, preventing this from happening. This is my second pair of Armas, and I love the brand. FYI, the Pony size fits my 14.2-hand Welsh/TB ponies, but there is a Small Pony size available for smaller ponies.
Shires Arma are the best fit I've found for my big-footed cob. The Woof Wear came up tiny in comparison.
I highly recommend the Shires Arma Rubber ones. They are like the old fashioned thick rubber. My horse was in heart bars for a period of time and these were fantastic, really hard-wearing and did not rub at all! Tend to go up a size for turnout.
Shires ARMA Smooth Gloss Bell Boot
★★★★★
I purchased Arma white, smooth surfaced bell boots. The Velcro closure is very secure. The bell boots material is the perfect thickness and flexibility. I expect it will hold up well. The fit is for a large horse (17-1) and it’s just right!

Measure around the pastern, where the top of the boot sits, and compare it with the top circumference in the chart for that style. Shires gives the ARMA Over Reach Boots in Horse (Full) a top circumference of 25 to 27 cm (9.8 to 10.6 in), and Large Horse (Extra Full) 27.5 to 29.5 cm (10.8 to 11.6 in). The gloss and neoprene lines measure differently, so check the chart for the boot you choose.
They are the US names for Shires's UK sizes. Pony and Cob are the same in both; Horse is Shires's Full, Large Horse is Extra Full and X Large Horse is XX Full. Small Pony sits below Pony in the brushing boots, and the ARMA Fetlock Boots come in Pony/Cob and Cob/Horse.
Tendon boots are open-front boots for the front legs that cover the back of the cannon; fetlock (ankle) boots are shorter boots for the hind legs that cover the fetlock joint. Each Shires ARMA jumping line, ARMA, Carbon, OXI-ZONE and Vortex, has a tendon boot and a matching fetlock boot.
Shires builds the Air Motion brushing boots with a mesh that lets air move around the leg, the OXI-ZONE boots with directional vents and Air Motion 3D mesh, and the Carbon Tendon Boots with CoolMax lining and mesh vents. Riders mention the Air Motion boots for summer schooling.
Yes. Shires says the ARMA Subzero Ice Boots suit front or hind legs. Each boot holds 32 gel cushions that you chill in the freezer, and they are sold as a pair.
