The best horse blanket is the one that suits your horse, your climate and how your horse lives. Two numbers do most of the work: denier and fill.
Denier: how tough the outer shell is
Denier measures the thickness of the outer fabric. A 600 denier turnout suits a quiet horse in a small group; 1200 denier and up stands up to rough play, fences and hedges. If your horse is hard on blankets, spend here first.
Fill: how warm it is
Fill is the insulation, measured in grams. A lightweight or rain sheet (0 to 100g) keeps a horse dry; a mediumweight (roughly 150 to 250g) covers most cold days; a heavyweight (300g and up) is for hard cold or a clipped horse. Use our blanket weight calculator to match fill to your weather.
Turnout or stable?
Turnout blankets are waterproof and built for the field. Stable blankets aren't waterproof and are meant for the barn, often layered under a turnout on the coldest nights. Shop lightweight, mediumweight and heavyweight turnouts and stable blankets.
Fit and features
Measure from the center of the chest to the point of the buttock to find your size. Look for shoulder gussets on broad or big-moving horses, a neck cover for wet climates, and leg straps or a tail flap that keep the blanket in place. Our horse blanket guide covers measuring in detail.
