Horse coolers are not waterproof and are not designed for outdoor weather protection. They serve a different purpose entirely: managing moisture and temperature after exercise or bathing. A horse that finishes a hard workout or comes out of a wash rack is damp and warm. A cooler wicks that moisture away from the coat while allowing gradual cooling, preventing the chill that comes from a wet horse standing in cold air.

Coolers are a show barn staple as well — used between classes to keep a horse's muscles warm and coat tidy while waiting for the next round.

The two main materials are wool and fleece. Wool coolers are the traditional choice: excellent moisture management, natural temperature regulation, and durable enough to last years with proper care. Fleece coolers are lighter, dry faster, and easier to launder. Anti-sweat sheets — a close relative, often made from an open-weave cotton mesh — are lighter still and work best in warmer conditions where the goal is airflow rather than warmth.

Fit matters: a cooler that slips or bunches at the withers won't stay in place on a moving horse.
